SUMMARY:Exhibition: Moments of Silence — Paintings by Douglas Newton
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is pleased to announce “Moments of Silence\,” an exhibition of small oil paintings by Douglas Newton. \nThese paintings invite sustained contemplation. Some are from observed reality. Others are mostly from his imagination. They are all painted over days and weeks of concentration and creativity. While his subjects from life are recognizable\, he eschews photo realism in favor of building up a richness of color and sumptuousness of form. \nARTIST STATEMENT:\nI paint subjects that have unexpected beauty that I translate into oil paint. I paint from my imagination and also from reality. I also have a series on candies and their wrappers\, focusing on their translucency and reflections. In all these paintings\, my emphasis is on light\, color\, texture and atmosphere. \nSome of the paintings are simple\, direct compositions. Others become almost abstract in their complexity. All\, I hope\, help us see the unexpected beauty in everything around us. \nDOUGLAS NEWTON\nhttp://www.douglasnewtonpaintings.com\ne-mail: dnewton456@gmail.com \nDOUGLAS NEWTON BIOGRAPHY: \nI have been painting seriously for about thirty years and full time for fifteen. Before that\, I had a career as an advertising art director. \nAt first\, I worked in a “suburban surrealism” mode\, painting the American landscape\, houses and gardens\, mostly from my imagination. I have also drawn and painted extensively from the figure. At the same time\, I began painting still lives\, mostly food\, toys and household objects. Gradually\, the still life painting became my main interest. The series of candy paintings evolved out of my food still lives. \nI work directly from nature\, instead of using photography as a reference. The paintings are all oil on canvas\, gallery wrapped on heavy stretchers. My main focus is capturing the effects of light on form\, texture and color. I also try to make the paint itself beautiful\, and to feel\, not like photo realism\, but as rich\, sensuous oil painting.

SUMMARY:Film Screenings + Q&A on the Physical & Psychological Effects of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, 9/11/15 at 7 pm\, CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) and friends invite you to a film program and Q&A about the ways in which the people of Japan continue to grapple with the myriad effects\, both seen and unseen\, of the ongoing Fukushima nuclear disaster. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $15 and children may sit on the floor for free. All proceeds after $150 expenses (for the space and refreshments) will go to the filmmakers. Special thanks to Mar Creation\, Inc. \nTHE PROGRAM (in Japanese w/ English subtitles) \nLittle Kyota Errand Hood  20′\, 2014\, dir. by Satsuki Okay\nA2-B-C  70′\, 2013\, dir. by Ian Thomas Ash\nQ&A by Skype with A2-B-C director Ian Thomas Ash (in English with Japanese interpreter provided) \nNarrative short “Little Kyota Errand Hood” focuses on the way that children and parents apprehend the invisible threat of possible radiation exposure and the conflicts and relationships that their attitudes spark. Feature documentary “A2-B-C” documents the growing number of children suffering from nose bleeds\, skin rashes\, and thyroid issues and the difficulty of receiving reliable information about the radiation threat from the authorities. Both films illustrate the ways in which Japanese parents have sought to take charge of the situation and implement their own solutions to care for their families and communities. \nSept 11\, of course\, marks the 14th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center as well as the 4.5 year anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake\, Tsunami and Nuclear Disaster in Japan. Both events triggered many responses. While the films on this program are set in Japan\, they speak also to life in  the aftermath of 9/11 and other environmental disasters around the world:  the not knowing whether the area is toxic or unsafe; not being able to get reliable information from the government; not knowing whether to relocate or return; not knowing whether subsequent illness are caused by the disaster or not; not knowing whether to live everyday with constant caution or to adopt a qué será\, será attitude and provide children with a sense of normalcy. It is our hope that this program will promote greater understanding of the difficulties that these man-made disasters cause and renewed compassion for and solidarity with the people trying to live through them and prevent them. \nABOUT THE FILMS \nLittle Kyota Errand Hood\, 20′\ndir. by Satsuki Okawa | 2014\nin Japanese with English subtitles\nhttp://littlekyota.tumblr.com/ \nThree years since Japan’s earthquake and tsunami\, a young boy named Kyota befriends a new girl in town\, Shiori. Sharing similar eccentricities\, the children decide to embark on an adventure together. But neither of them realizes what is at stake. \nNew York Japan CineFest\nSao Paulo International Short Film Festival\nHeartland Film Festival\nYubari International Fantastic Film Festival\nAichi International Women’s Film Festival\nSapporo Short Fest\nKiryu Film Festival  \nA2-B-C\, 71′\ndir. by Ian Thomas Ash | 2013\nin Japanese with English subtitles\nhttp://www.a2documentary.com/\n\nEighteen months after the nuclear meltdown\, children in Fukushima are suffering from severe nose bleeds and are developing skin rashes and thyroid cysts and nodules. Citing a lack of transparency in the official medical testing of their children and the ineffectiveness of the decontamination of their homes and schools\, the children’s mothers take radiation monitoring into their own hands. \n \nGolden Honey Comb for Outstanding Work in Film\nat the 2014 Lake Champlain International Film Festival (USA) \nSpecial Recognition\nat the 2014 Uranium Film Festival (Brazil) \nAward for Best Documentary\nat the 2013 STEPS Rights Film Festival (Ukraine) \nBest of Festival Award\nat the 2013 Guam International Film Festival \nNippon Visions Award (best film by new-coming Japan-based director)\nat the 2013 Nippon Connection Japanese Film Festival (Germany)
