SUMMARY:Okinawa Memorial Peace Concert
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) invites you to join us in observing Okinawa Memorial Day (慰霊の日 Irei no Hi\, which means “the day to console the dead”) with Okinawan and Japanese folk/traditional music performed by Okinawa Goodwill Ambassador Sonny Ochiai and Rino (sometimes backed by guitarist Hiroshi Kono and drummer Jun Nakanishi). Opening for them are Yoshiko ♡ and Naomi Mizuguchi. CRS Director Christopher Pelham and the Rev. Dr. T. Kenjitsu Nakagaki (TK) of the Heiwa Peace and Reconciliation Foundation of New York Ltd. will offer an opening prayer for peace. \nThe program will be held Saturday\, June 22\, 2019 from 3 – 4:30 pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets for students are $15 and for seniors are $20. Tickets are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621) and at CRS. \nSonny Ochiai is a certified teacher of the Society for the Preservation of the Nomura School of Ryukyuan Classical Music based in Okinawa. The Okinawa Times newspaper company awarded him the ‘Apex Award’ in 2010. As an Okinawa Goodwill Ambassador certified by the Okinawan Governor\, he continues to promote Okinawa and its culture through various festivals and ethnic events in the New York area. \nRino (vocals and sanshin) is a performer of drama and music\, particularly for peace. She learned drama at the United Performer’s Studio\, led by Yoko Narahashi\, and studied traditional folk songs from Ryushu Kubota of Japan Folk Song Association. \nNaomi Mizoguchi fell in love with Okinawan music when she first went to the Ryukyu Festival in the 1990s. After two decades\, she finally started learning the sanshin (Okinawan three-stringed instrument) from Sonny Ochiai as well as the fansoo (Okinawan transverse flute) from Earl Ikeda. A filmmaker\, she has directed and edited more than 300 video programs for commercial companies as well as community organizations. Her first documentary feature film is about the Ainu\, the indigenous people of Japan. The film premiered in 2018. \nYoshiko ♡ loves music and art and plays a sanshin given to her by Mr. Rio Inyaku\, whose U.S. debut concert she produced at CRS last summer. She is the event organizer/ coordinator for Dr. Ikegawa\, a leading researcher of prenatal memory\, for Ms. Mayumi\, a Toe Reading Teacher\, for Dr. Umezu\, a dentist\, and for DAI\, vocalist of Rock band “Okan.” She also serves as the coordinator for One Drop Choir NY and as the event coordinator for Heiwa Peace & Reconciliation Foundation of New York. She lives in nature and enjoys making home-made fermented foods like miso soy milk yogurt. \nRev. T. Kenjitsu Nakagaki (TK) is the head resident minister of New York Buddhist Church — Jodoshinshu (Shin Buddhist) Temple; chairperson of the Eastern District Buddhist Ministers Associations of BCA; former president of the Buddhist Council of New York; former UCM Buddhist Chaplain at Columbia University; Board of Trustee of the Institute of Buddhist Studies; adviser of American Buddhist Study Center; Active in Interfaith Circles such as the Interfaith Center of New York(vice chair)\, The Interfaith Alliance (board). Religions for Peace (board); Also active in Asian and Japanese communities such as Japanese American Association of New York (board member)\, Japanese American Lions Club (honorable advisor)\, Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS (religious advisor). He is an author of New York Bozu Indo o Aruku (Gendai-shokan Publisher in Japan\, 2003). He has been active in peace-building activities. He has organized Interfaith Peace ceremony to commemorate Hiroshima/ Nagasaki atomic bombing every year on August 5\, since 1994. He has organized Annual Floating Lanterns Ceremony to commemorate WTC 9-11 tragedy at Hudson River on September 11 since 2002.
