SUMMARY:CRS Winter Solstice Healing Circle: Meditation & Whirling with Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Healing Circle & Whirling practice. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. This month we welcome back CRS Founder Yasuko Kasaki to lead our prayer. And we’ll be welcoming the Winter Solstice with live music by Tomchess of the American Sufi Project! It’s such a joy to whirl with live music so we’ll be devoting extra time to that. \nThe participation fee is $20 with advanced registration and $25 on the day of the class. \nThrough whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn\, that we may share our divine strength and bear witness to the divinity in others. \nIf you are quiet and in a state of prayer when you Turn\, offering everything of yourself to God\, then when your body is spinning\, there is a completely still point in the center… The heavens respond; and all the invisible kingdoms join in the dance. But the world does not understand. They think we Turn in order to go into some sort of trance. It is true that sometimes we do go into that state you call ecstasy\, but that is only when we know and experience at the same time. We do not Turn for ourselves. We turn around in the way we do so that the Light of God may descend upon the earth. As you act as a conduit in the Turn\, the light comes through the right hand\, and the left hand brings it into this world… We turn for God and for the world\, and it is the most beautiful thing you can imagine. — Mevlevi Shaikh Suleyman Hyatt Dede \nSufi Dance Instructor Lále Sayoko was one of the founding members of Japan’s famous Samanyolu professional bellydance group\, and has since developed her own solo career touring with UK’s Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on a 44 city tour of the UK\, to Turkey’s Baba Zula\, to New York’s Bella Gaia multimedia Earth from Space journey show. Appearing in Japanese and American magazines and newspapers\, Lale aspires for dance to be a powerful communicator though traditional technique and spiritual embodiment. She has lately been studying Sufi dance with Rana Gorgani and in April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi dance training.\nhttp://www.lalesayoko.com \nTomchess (oud\, ney\, morsing) is a New York City–based multi-instrumentalist\, improviser\, and composer who has played and recorded with some of the most esteemed players in the improvisational scene (Dewey Redman\, Butch Morris\, Pharoah Sanders\, Drew Gress\, Ronald Shannon Jackson) as well as Moroccan sintarist Hassan Hakmoun. SUMMARY:Miracles in Manhattan with Jon Mundy\, Ph.D.: The Vedanta & A Course in Miracles
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Miracles in Manhattan\, lectures on the teachings of A Course in Miracles and related texts and topics\, with Jon Mundy\, Ph.D. and occasional guest lecturers. \nThe topic for December’s lecture is the Vedanta & A Course in Miracles. Guest David Brown will be joining Jon to discuss this rich topic. Advaita Vedanta is a classic Indian path to spiritual realization. The idea is that the soul (true Self) is at the highest metaphysical Reality (God). As with ACIM\, followers of Vedanta seek spiritual liberation through acquiring Knowledge of one’s identity as the Self (Atman). Bill Thetford\, Ph.D. Helen’s companion in the composition of the Course\, once said that A Course in Miracles is the Christian Vedanta. \n~ $25 per person with advanced purchase online\, by phone (212-677-8621) or at CRS until the day before the lecture~\n~ $30 per person at the door ~\nAs long as space is available\, “No one is ever turned away who cannot pay.” Contribute what you can. \nThe lectures are held on the 2nd Sunday of the month (but 1st Sunday in May). \nAlthough we would\, of course\, prefer to share with you in class\, Miracles in Manhattan classes are now also being offered via life-streaming for those who cannot attend the class in-person. The day of the class\, go to our YouTube Channel:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwxH3nWSMFDGA1SiR9kAbeg\nand choose the live-streaming button \nDr. Jon Mundy met Dr. Helen Schucman\, the scribe for A Course in Miracles\, in 1973. Helen introduced Jon to the Course and served as his mentor and guide till she became ill in 1980. He is the author of Living A Course in Miracles. After Return to Love by Marianne Williamson\, it is currently the best-selling book based on the teaching of A Course in Miracles. www.miraclesmagazine.org \nDuring the 1980’s\, following a deep awakening during Encounter Group therapy\, David Brown spent nine months in India with Swami Chinmayanada\, the founder of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide. David traveled all over India with Swamiji and received his teachings of Vedanta first hand. Subsequent to that life-changing experience\, David has continued his studies of Vedanta with Vedanta scholars in the USA and he has led study groups in Advaita (non-dual) Vedanta for well over 20 years. Finding a connecting thread of Truth in all true spirituality\, David also spent several years in Toronto as a student of Lama Namse\, a Tibetan Buddhist Kargupya monk. Prior to Ken Wapnick’s passing\, David and his partner\, Lynne\, spent three years studying A Course in Miracles with Ken. \n“David is in his 80’s. He’s been at this work for quite a long while studying both Vedanta and ACIM. He’s quite a sincere gentleman.” – Jon Mundy

SUMMARY:Intro to Sufi Dance Class with Lâle Sayoko
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient practice of meditative whirling known as Sufi dance or Sema (Sama in Iranian). You will learn the techniques of whirling\, but Sema is not about reproducing a certain form or aesthetic. Rather\, the technique serves as a vehicle for inner journeying. Sema means spiritual listening. Together we’ll create a sacred space in which we can safely listen to and share our true selves and experience oneness with the Divine. \nEach class consists of some explanation of the theory and technique\, exercises\, practice whirling\, and sharing and discussion of what you experienced and felt. \nWhirling commonly induces dizziness or nausea. Over time\, through whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control. We empty our minds of all thoughts of the individual self as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn. Into this emptiness floods a divine fullness\, which sometimes gives rise to a state known as “mystical intoxication\,” a reflection of knowing and experiencing that you and I and the Divine are One. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing (white\, gray or black color is preferable\, avoiding prints and shiny material which might distract the eye while whirling) and wear socks or soft soled shoes. If you have a whirling skirt and/or a frame drum\, please feel free to bring it. Avoid eating a large meal for two hours prior to class. \n$20 with advance registration\, $25 at the door \nLearn more about Sufi dance:\nhttp://www.ranagorgani.com/10-things-about-sufi-dance/ \nAbout Sufi Dance Instructor Lâle Sayoko \nSayoko was one of the founding members of Japan’s famous Samanyolu professional bellydance group\, and has since developed her own solo career touring with UK’s Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on a 44 city tour of the UK\, to Turkey’s Baba Zula\, and with New York’s Bella Gaia multimedia Earth from Space journey show. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ne-ko — Paintings by Hiroki Otsuka
DESCRIPTION:CRS is proud to present “Ne-Ko\,” an exhibition featuring a selection of sumi-e or ink paintings by Japanese artist and illustrator Hiroki Otsuka. Fusing traditional black ink wash with fluid brushwork reminiscent of Japan’s rich artistic legacy with playful portrayals of cats\, Otsuka produces a striking visual formula that is both whimsical and refined. This exhibition will open on October 22 and will be on view through November 30. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Saturday\, November 10\, 2018 from 6 – 8 pm. \nCats are beloved in Japanese culture as symbols of good fortune\, and have long claimed a monopoly on cuteness in mainstream media. Otsuka employs the varying shades and subtle tones of ink washes alongside animated brush strokes to capture the vibrant spirit\, graceful movement\, poise\, and yes\, cuteness\, of the world’s favorite felines. \nABOUT HIROKI OTSUKA  \nA professional comic book illustrator since 1994\, Brooklyn-based Japanese artist/illustrator Hiroki Otsuka has illustrated for a number of major Japanese publications. In 2005\, Hiroki Otsuka’s focus shifted from graphic to fine arts\, working predominantly with traditional sumi ink used in Japanese calligraphy. Hiroki Otsuka’s debut solo show at Brooklyn’s Stay Gold Gallery in 2005 prompted The New Yorker to write that his works “push the populist youth quotient through the roof.” Since then\, his work has appeared in galleries throughout the United States and Japan\, and has been featured in international art fairs in New York\, Tokyo and Basel\, Switzerland. He’s been exhibited at major art institutions such as The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles (Nothing Moments\, 2007) and in academic settings such as Pittsburgh University Art Gallery (Making Faces: Depiction of Women in Japan from Edo to Today\, 2009). In 2007\, Hiroki Otsuka was featured in Japan Society’s centennial exhibition Making a Home\, curated by Eric C. Shiner\, that highlighted 33 Japanese contemporary artists living and working in New York. Berlin’s Kunstraum Richard Sorge held a major exhibition of Hiroki Otsuka’s paintings and murals in 2009 entitled Everything to More. The same year\, Otsuka provided the integrated illustrations for choreographer Jeremy Wade’s critically acclaimed multimedia dance there is no end to more\, a Japan Society commission which had its world premiere in New York in December 2009. Hiroki Otsuka served as Japan Society’s first-ever manga artist-in-residence during the exhibition Graphic Heroes\, Magic Monsters: Japanese Prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from the Arthur R. Miller Collection. Most recently\, a show of new work\, “Men and Cats\,” has been hung at the Wayfarers Gallery in Brooklyn\, and in the Woodland/Shimko Galleries in Provincetown\, Mass. and Palm Springs. https://www.hirokiotsuka.nyc \nARTIST STATEMENT \nNe-Ko \nCats have captivated Japanese artists for more than a thousand years. In the Tale of Genji\, the masterwork of 11th century literature\, a cat sets the plot in motion by knocking over a screen\, and the moment has been captured time and again in prints and paintings. With the arrival of ukiyo-e\, the woodblock printing style of the 17th century\, the homes of Japan became populated by the world’s first great wave of cat art\, featuring the animals both in their natural form and walking upright in kimonos. Perhaps it is not surprising that Hello Kitty\, the most famous illustrated feline\, also comes from Japan. \nHiroki Otsuka’s work consistently mixes the media and methods of high and popular art. In “Ne-Ko\,” which means cat in Japanese\, he approaches this time-honored subject. Otsuka uses the traditional\, black-ink style of sumi painting to capture the animals’ pose and self-possession. But it is his eye as a manga cartoonist of 25 years that gives his subjects the motion and playfulness that has endeared them to their human companions. \nABOUT THE CURATOR \nExhibition Curator Reina Miyake is a recent graduate of Vassar College with a BA in Art History. She is a lifelong resident of NYC\, which cultivated her love of visual art and the color black. This is her first time curating an exhibition.

SUMMARY:CRS Healing Circle: Prayer\, Sound Meditation + Whirling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Healing Circle & Whirling practice. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. Through meditation\, prayer\, drumming\, singing\, and the whirling dance of the sufis\, we join together in unity and experience our limitlessness. Our circles are held on the third Thursday of the month at CRS. \nThis month the Circle we welcome back Sufi Dance Artist Lale Sayoko to lead us! \nPlease feel free to bring your frame drum\, rattle\, flute\, whistle\, chimes\, singing bowl\, or other instrument. You don’t need to be experienced. Together\, we will learn to listen to one another\, play together\, and express ourselves and find Oneness of intention. — Mevlevi Shaikh Suleyman Hyatt Dede \nAbout Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko \nLale was one of the founding members of Japan’s famous Samanyolu professional bellydance group\, and has since developed her own solo career touring with UK’s Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on a 44 city tour of the UK\, to Turkey’s Baba Zula\, to New York’s Bella Gaia multimedia Earth from Space journey show. Appearing in Japanese and American magazines and newspapers\, Lale aspires for dance to be a powerful communicator though traditional technique and spiritual embodiment. She has lately been studying Sufi dance with Rana Gorgani and in April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi dance training.\nhttp://www.lalesayoko.com

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Concert Series Vol. 3: 7 word chanting 靈山會相 & tea ceremony
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents 7 word chanting Yeongsanhoesang 靈山會相\, featuring Korean traditional music performed by gamin (piri\, saenghwang) and Min Kyung Park  (haegeum) accompanied by a tea ceremony performed by Korean tea master Sei-Ryun Chun. Following the performance\, there will be a short talk about Korean tea ceremony and Q&A with the artists. \nFor this event\, which is Vol. 3 of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series curated by gamin\, she would like to introduce the Korean concept of Pungnyu\, which is defined as an artistic form of recreation incorporating elements of nature\, life\, and art. Pungnyu is intrinsic to a tasteful lifestyle and to Koreans’ collective and individual entertainment culture. It literally means “streams of wind.” Sharing tea\, playing music\, writing\, and observing the changing of the seasons are traditional pastimes used for transcending the material or secular aspects of life and cultivating a peaceful mind. Participating in a tea ceremony quiets the mind and opens the senses\, allowing us to experience more of the subtlety and depth of the music performance. \nBoth the music and tea ceremony presented in this program have been handed down to us from medieval Buddhist practices. As Buddhism in Korea fell in and out of favor through the centuries\, both the music and the tea ceremony were frequently revised to serve the times. Artists today continue to find ways to explore and extend these traditional art forms in ways that speak to the present moment and connect us not only to our heritage but to one another. \nTickets are $25 and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Students/seniors with valid ID are $15 at the door. \nCROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA\, curated by gamin (piri\, taepyeonso\, saenghwang)\, provides musicians from Korea with space to experiment with the new\, to collaborate across genres\, cultures and disciplines\, and to explore new ways of using creative communication to facilitate a shared practice of presence. The goal is to dissolve boundaries between performers and audiences\, the traditional and contemporary\, classical and experimental\, Korea and the world. Participants in the series are encouraged to incorporate meditation\, improvisation\, and collaborations with visual and movement-based artists as well as musical artists from different traditions. \nAbout the Program \nTea ceremony by Sei-Ryun Chun\nPiri & saenghwang played by gamin\nHaegeum played by Min Kyung Park \nOriginally a vocal piece with lyrics drawing on the words of the Buddha’s sermon in Mount Yeongsan\, India\, Yeongsanhoesang became purely instrumental in the 15th century. The music has undergone continuous change with the current version taking form sometime in the 19th century. There are many versions of the suite\, which typically includes 8–9 pieces. While the genesis of the suite is not completely certain\, the first piece of the suite\, “Sangryeongsan” appears to be the foundation for the suite. The following pieces in the suite include variations on “Sangryeongsan\,” as well as standard musical forms and dance pieces of the Joseon era (1392-1910). “Sangryeongsan\,” the slowest and longest piece in the suite\, progresses gracefully and gently like the flow of water. \nThe Korean tea ceremony is distinguished by its emphasis on preparing and enjoying tea with a natural manner and minimum of ritualized formality. Originally\, it was directly connected with Buddhist practices\, but today it can be enjoyed by everyone. Cha (tea) was introduced to Korea around the 6th or 7th century from China. Some Korean scholars or Buddhist monks who traveled to China probably brought tea with them and began to drink in Korea. In the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392)\, Korean tea culture became popular with the rise of Buddhism as a national religion. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910)\, the Korean tea culture declined as Confucianism replaced Buddhism as a spiritual mainstream. Buddhism was repressed and became separated from the public. In the early 19th century\, a leading Korean philosopher\, Dasan Jeong Yakyong (1762-1836)\, and the Korean Buddhist Seon (Zen) master Chou Uisun (1786-1866)\, known as the “Father of Korean Tea\,” played key roles in reviving the long lost Korean tea tradition\, which continues today. \nAbout the Artists \nTea master Sei Ryun Chun was born in Busan\, Korea in 1956 and grew up in an artistic family. Majoring in fine art at Kunkuk University in 1979\, she studied sculpture and painting. After graduation\, she taught at Shinjung middle and high schools. In 1981\, she moved to America and studied etching at the New Milford Art Center in New Jersey and New York University in New York. She has also written extensively about art. She received the AHL Foundation artist’s prize in 2000. She has had 14 solo exhibitions and participated in the Miami Art Fair and Fine Art Fair San Francisco. She has been curating exhibitions in New York and New Jersey. She is currently incorporating her mastery of the traditional Korean tea ceremony into her exhibitions and presentations. seiryunchun.com \ngamin is a master practitioner of the piri\, taepyongso (double reed instruments)\, and saenghwang (reed mouth organ). Currently\, as a yisuja (designated master) of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No.46 for piri court music and Daechita\, she strives to both preserve and enhance traditional Korean music. At Seoul National University and as a member and assistant principal player of the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra\, Gamin has used her virtuosity to perform authentic jeongak (classical court music) and sinawi (shaman ritual music)\, as well as new compositions for her instruments. gamin-music.com \nHaegeum instrumentalist Minkyung Park is a recipient of the 67th Chosun Daily Debut Concert and was selected as 2006 Kumho Young Artist by Kumho Asiana Foundation for Arts and Culture\, which discovers and supports nationally talented instrumentalists. She has performed at many prestigious venues internationally including ‘tea music – longing for friends’ in NYC\, combining art performance with harmonization of various genre of music and arts. She received a B.S. and M.S in Korean Music from Seoul National University and completed a D.M.A course at Hanyang University. parkminkyung.com

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Small Voyage by Ayane Kurai
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Small Voyage\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Ayane Kurai. The exhibition will open Thursday\, September 6\, 2018 and will remain on view through October 20\, 2018. An Opening Reception with the artist will be held on Thursday\, September 13\, 2018 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Pictured above:  Women March 2018 copyright © 2018 by Ayane Kurai. \nThough the works in this exhibition are large for CRS\, they are nevertheless among the smallest works created by Kurai. Thickly layered and heavily textured\, these expressionistic oil paintings vary in subject matter and degree of abstraction. What holds constant and what distinguishes Kurai’s works is their intensity of color and texture and the immediacy of their evocation of the colors and textures of a life fully experienced. \nThis is the second solo show by Kurai at CRS. The first\, “Yuko’s Spring Has Come” in 2010\, mostly featured works created around the time of the birth and early childhood of her two children\, and celebrated the life of her friend the artist Yuko Sueta\, who had recently passed away. As Kurai’s children have gotten older\, she has become increasingly active again and has been steadily exhibiting new works in many shows. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAyane Kurai was born in 1969 in Hyogo\, Japan. In 1988 she entered the department of paintings\, College of Art and Design\, Musashino Art University in Tokyo. She has been living and working in New York City since 1990. SUMMARY:Concert: ATOWA + Amir Bey’s “Comets & Magic Mirrors”
DESCRIPTION:CRS Presents an evening of improvisational music and visual art by the multi-instrumentalist duo ATOWA and visual artist Amir Bey. ATOWA combines the celestial sounds of pianist/vocalist/crystal-singing bowl player Naoe Moriya with the earthy instincts of singer-songwriter/pianist/percussionist Saco Yasuma. With Amir Bey’s “Comets and Magic Mirrors” mobiles twisting in the air above them\, the duo evokes a marriage of earth and sky. \nThe performance will take place on Saturday\, September 22\, 2018 at 7 pm. Tickets are $35 at the door and $30 in advance and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Direct ticket link:  https://bit.ly/2vO7I6Z \nThe piano duo ATOWA was formed in May 2016 in NYC. This is the second collaboration with Amir Bey’s “Comets and Magic Mirrors“ installation and poetry\, following their performance in Kyoto\, Japan on July 1 of this year. This will be their first attempt using two keyboards. Playfully playing off one another\, Moriya and Yasuma offer their ever changing vibrations to the Universe. \nAmir Bey’s “Comets and Magic Mirrors” \nThis installation is Amir’s unique conceptual world that is a metaphor for the encounters with other people and things in our daily lives. “Comets” represent enormous impactful energy that crash into “Magic Mirrors.” The copper and amalgamated metal mobiles organically flow with air currents\, creating correspondences between people and music. The installation takes you to a magical and joyful world. \nARTIST PROFILES \nAmir Bey is a New York City-based artist whose work spans many disciplines. A mixed-media sculptor who works in a variety of media\, from carvings\, installations\, metal work including bronze and copper\, silkscreen on fabric for costumes and set designs\, as well as mask-making for performance. Paul has been involved with the recovery community since 1988 and has been leading workshops and holding talks for 18 years. He is the author of The Escape To Everywhere. A Zen slap to your mind\, Paul’s unique language and solid presence bespeak the depth of his understanding of the human condition—in which the original addiction is the mind’s addiction to being a self. His message\, that inspires many\, is simple and clear: \nYOU ARE ALREADY THAT WHICH YOU SEEK. \nYou are wholeness itself. The ‘self’ is a ‘parasite’ that claims to be you and once the ‘foreign installment’ is believed\, comes the seeking to get rid of it. \nhttp://www.zenbitchslap.com \nsuggested donation $20 cash at the door (no one turned away)..

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Concert Series: Yut Nori /  나비 Butterfly II Conceptual Transformation Improvisation (2018.9.14)
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Yut Nori /  나비 Butterfly II Conceptual Transformation Improvisation (2018.9.14)\, an intimate evening of music intimately intertwined with conceptual visual art created by composer/pianist Hyo Jee Kang\, musician gamin\, and dance artists binbinFactory (Satoshi Haga & Rie Fukuzawa). The performance will take place at CRS on Friday\, September 14\, 2018 at 8 pm. This program is Vol. 2 of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series curated by gamin. \nTickets are $20 in advance\, $25 on the day of the performance\, and $15 at the door for students and seniors with ID. Kids accompanied by an adult are FREE at the door! Tickets are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621) and at CRS. \nThe first work on the program\, Yut Nori\, is an experiment to create a music and dance performance by playing with the traditional Korean board game Yut Nori (윷놀이). The Yut game board depicts icons representing four gods\, 36 constellations and five animals encircling a star that represents the eternal. The audience will play the game\, and their movement around the board will bring us into contact with the choices\, chance encounters\, friendships and challenges we meet throughout life — which the performers will then translates into music and dance! \nComposition by Hyo Jee Kang\nCo-work and movement by binbinFactory\nOriginal composition by Hyo jee Kang and So-Ui Lee\nThe painting inspired by the Yut Nori game board\, printed on canvas\, is by Hyojee Kang and Wha Lee\nMusic by Hyo Jee Kang and gamin \n \nThe second work on the program\, 나비 Butterfly II Conceptual Transformation Improvisation (2018.9.14)\, is about the soul of being hurt and lost. The image of the butterfly connects the poem “Mirror” by the avant-garde Korean poet Yi Sang (September 14\, 1910 – April 17\, 1937) with one of the victims who drowned in the sinking of the South Korean vessel Sewol that took the lives of more than 200 high school students on April 16\, 2014. The work also “mirrors” and reflects the history of Jeju Island and the artist’s personal memories. This is the fifth such transformation of this poem into music by Hyo Jee Kang and is part of her conceptual transformation series\, in which she explores transformations from and to texts\, notes\, scores\, images\, paintings\, feelings\, stage arts\, lights and voices. \nVol. 3 of the CROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA series will be: \nFriday\, November 9\, 2018 at 8 pm\n7 words chanting_Yeongsanheosang:  Korean traditional music concert\npiri\, saenghwang by gamin\nhaegeum by Minkyung Park \nAbout the Artists \nHyo Jee Kang has been focusing on transformation between media and objects to create a new art form. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Love Planet - sending love of the plants all over the world through photography
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Love Planet —  sending love of the plants all over the world through photography\, an exhibition by photographer yukko＊. The exhibition will open Saturday\, July 7\, 2018 and will remain on view through August 30\, 2018. An Opening Reception with live music by the artist will be held on July 7 from 5 – 7 pm. \nConcept \n‘Love Planet Project’ was created by photographer yukko＊ to share love of plants all over the world through photography. \nThe aim of this project is for the plants in yukko＊’s photo postcards to be delivered all over the world by those who join this project by ‘pay-it-forwarding’. \nIn this show the original prints of the postcards and posters of the 16 selected photos used for the project postcards as well as the actual postcards themselves will be displayed. \n All her photos were taken with a film camera\, and none of them have been re-touched by the computer. \nArtist Statement \nPlants have always seemed to be very close to me since I was a child.  Without recognizing it\, I started taking photos and naturally I became a photographer specializing in pictures of plants. Gradually I noticed that I always felt the affection and graciousness of the plants while taking photos\, and started to want to try to transform the plants’ energy of love into light through photography. At the same time I started to talk to the plants when taking photos saying\, “Please let me deliver your love to those who need it.” \nHaving seen visitors to my photo exhibition shed tears while looking at my photos\, it became certain to me that the wave of love of plants can be passed on to us human beings\, and I decided to deliver the love of plants all over the world through photography.  As a start\, I have launched this ‘Love Planet Project’ in New York through this photo exhibition at CRS. \nBio \nyukko＊ was born and raised in Sapporo\, Japan. She became interested in different cultures when she saw a lot of foreign guests at the winter Olympic games in her hometown when she was a child. She kept this interest in the world and became an English translator at the local government after she studied at Kings College\, London. During her career as a translator she came to understand the cultural diversity as well as re-recognizing the spiritual nature of Japanese people. \nAfter being transferred to the suburbs to work as a government staff member in charge of tourism\, she started to take photographs as a part of her work. Before long she became absorbed in photography and came to recognize that photos reflect what the photographer sees and feels. \nShe experienced depression during her career in government and decided to quit and start her new career as a photographer based in Osaka. \nNow she holds photo exhibitions in various places in Japan as well as photo classes and portrait shooting.  She also works as a personal fashion-consultant and also as a singer.  She is an integrated artist supporting people to live honestly according to their nature. \nhttp://yukko-web.net/love-planet-project/jp \n

He plays kankara-sanshin extremely fast and also behind his neck just like Jimi Hendrix. He uses effects pedals and a loop station connector with kankara-sanshin\, which makes his music unique. He has performed live in many cities\, including on big stages such as “World Eisa Contest 2017” held at the National Theater Okinawa\, and “Sanshin-day\,” one of the biggest folk song festivals in Japan. \nRio’s set of Okinawan folk songs\, fusion of Okinawan and American pop\, and remix of Ryukyo classical and folk music and his amazing performance with two sanshins will surely bring you the joy of living from the South Island! \nhttp://riomusic.rederio.jp\nhttps://www.facebook.com/OkinawaRio\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EV5c198GqU \nThe Kankara-sanshin I play with is originally a handmade can-based music instrument that comforted Okinawan people in the aftermath of the 2nd World War. Okinawa\, which is located in southern-most Japan\, consists of many beautiful islands with rich culture and friendly people. In 1945 the battle of Okinawa was fierce and many people died\, but the survivors never lost their love of life\, nor their love of music\, and they restored the community. My dream is to create new Okinawan songs and sing with friends all over the world to make the Earth a happier place to live. Let’s enjoy music and celebrate the joy of living altogether!  — Rio Inyaku \nRio’ is a14-year-old singer-songwriter and pianist. She has been learning the basics of music and piano since she was three years old\, and since she was six years old also music theory and composition. She has won a series of authoritative piano performance competitions and composition competitions every year\, and her outstanding career has attracted many music stake holders. She started writing songs with lyrics and playing the guitar in 2017 and her YouTube channel “Ririon” already developed a good reputation. In December 2017\, she recorded her original song “Daijoubu” (which means “You are OK” in English) with a band arrangement. It was distributed worldwide by iTunes\, Amazon Music etc. in February 2018. Drumming\, recording\, mixing and mastering are by Masatatsu Tsubuki\, a renowned recording engineer in Japan. She makes her inspiration from heaven into her lyrics and sings for the world with love and warmth. \nHer original music is distributed at https://www.tunecore.co.jp/artist/Rio_ririon\nFacebook https://www.facebook.com/Rio.ririon7/\nDigest videos https://youtu.be/LVZY-sYoTAY\nYouTube “Ririon” https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuapS8rqLY4p8AtE52sI_fg \nI have composed many piano songs since I was little. One day when I was 13 years old\, I suddenly had an inspiration of lyrics and melodies; they naturally became a song. Since then\, when I am relaxed\, lyrics and melodies come to me at the same time\, which makes me feel like they are coming down from heaven. In April I stayed at the home of an American family in the Los Angeles suburbs\, and I realized we can communicate by music without words. I would like to make many people happy and cheerful with my music. At this concert I will sing my original songs and play my original piano instrumental composition. I am looking forward to seeing you all!      — Rio’ \n  \n

SUMMARY:CRS Healing Circle: Prayer\, Sound Meditation + Whirling
DESCRIPTION:CRS invites you to join us for our monthly healing circle led by Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko and CRS co-founders Yasuko Kasaki & Christopher Pelham with crystal singing bowl meditation by Miyoko Satoh. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. Through meditation\, prayer\, partnering work\, drumming\, singing\, and the whirling dance of the sufis\, we join together in unity and experience our limitlessness. NOTE:  This month Lale Sayoko will be away. She will return in Sept. \nOur circles are held on the third Thursday of the month at CRS. Introductory drop-in classes in the technique and theory of Sufi Dance (whirling) are taught by Lale  Sayoko on the first Thursday of each month at CRS from 7:30 – 9 pm. \nWe also support the family of Sayoko’s five-year-old daughter\, Amara\, who is growing up with a brain tumor and all the challenges that presents. Each Thursday 9pm we join minds with Amara’s prayer circle of hundreds of people around the world. \nPlease feel free to bring your frame drum\, rattle\, flute\, whistle\, chimes\, singing bowl\, or other instrument. You don’t need to be experienced. Together\, we will learn to listen to one another\, play together\, and express ourselves and find Oneness of intention.

SUMMARY:Four Seasons in NY: Gems of Japanese Music Vol. 12
DESCRIPTION:CRS & Mar Creation\, Inc. invite you to discover traditional Japanese music by the acclaimed koto and shamisen player and vocalist Yoko Reikano Kimura\, offered together with an exclusive taste of beautiful Japanese seasonal sweets prepared by Mochi Rin. The next concert will take place in the award-winning White Room at CRS on Sunday\, August 12\, 2018 at 4 pm. Tickets are $25 and include delicious wagashi (sweets). Seating is limited and advanced purchased (online\, by phone 212-677-8621\, or in person at CRS) is encouraged. \nProgram;\nChidori no Kyoku – Songs of Plover – (Yoshizawa kengyo)\nShin Sarashi (Fukakusa kengyo/arranged by Kin’ichi Nakanoshima)\nMittsu no Dansho – Three Fragments – (Kin’ichi Nakanoshima) \n“…Yoko Reikano Kimura\, playing the shamisen and singing\, is superb….” — New York Times \n“…Kimura’s performance on the solo shamisen was quite stunning. An elegant refined presence perfectly poised\, she played with precision\, beauty and the utmost confidence….” — San Francisco Examiner \nAfter many centuries\, the brilliance of traditional Japanese music is still being passed on to the present day. Come and experience the sounds of koto and shamisen and enjoy the taste of the four seasons here in New York. This concert series features each season’s representative traditional works along with the colorful and delicate Japanese style confectionaries. \nThis will be the fourth and final concert of Volume 3 of this seasonal series of music concerts called Four Seasons in New York — Gems of Japanese Music. \n\nEach season is expressed through ingredients. Spring traditionally begins with sakura (cherry blossoms)\, broccoli rabe\, strawberries and raspberries\, followed by elderflower\, rose\, edamame and sansho (Japanese pepper) in summer. As autumn approaches we’ll pick chrysanthemum\, apples\, grapes\, chestnuts and hazelnuts; and yuzu and kumquats in winter…. Even within one season\, the taste and the form change gradually from hashiri through nagori. \nMochi Rin / Bite-sized mochi dessert made with organic bean paste\, seasonally fruits and flowers in NY. \nWe present a new type of mochi that doesn’t quite exist in Japan\, by infusing New York’s locally-sourced ingredients into Japan’s popular traditional dessert —the stuffed mochi rounds\, such as daifuku and sakura-mochi — and mixing in rin\, the element of restrained grace.  http://www.rin-nyc.com \n  \n  \nMore about Yoko Reikano Kimura \nAs a frequent soloist and collaborator\, Japanese born Koto/Shamisen performer and singer Yoko Reikano Kimura has performed in NYC\, Chicago\, Tokyo\, Kyoto and many other cities\, featuring a wide-ranging repertoire from classical Japanese music to improvisational pieces. Yoko has won numerous awards including the First Prize at the prestigious 10th Kenjun Memorial National Koto Competition as the first Yamada style koto performer. She received the First Prize at the 4th Great Wall International Music Competition and the Osaka Chinese Counsel Award and won the Japanese music audition for NHK-FM radio and her solo shamisen performance was broadcasted nationally. Since then she has performed numerous koto and shamisen pieces for the radio and regularly toured internationally. \nSince Yoko moved to the US in 2010\, her mission has been to promote Japanese music to American audiences. As part of this mission she is performing and giving workshops at various venues\, such as the UN\, Merkin\, Bargemusic\, Roulette\, Princeton University\, Japan Society\, Harvard University\, Princeton University\, the New England Conservatory\, the University of Chicago\, Duke University and many others. http://www.yamadaryu.com/reikano/ \nAs part of the award-winning Duo Yumeno\, she has  released the album Flowers\, Birds\, Wind\, Moon:  The Music of Marty Regan. SUMMARY:USAATO Clothing Exhibition & Sale
DESCRIPTION:CRS welcomes you to the fourth exhibition of USAATO clothing at CRS on August 4\, 2018! Designer Mr. Usaburo’s staff will personally help to select and coordinate the garments that would suit you best. \nAugust 4 from 11 am – 5 pm in the award-winning White Room \nUSAATO shares beautiful traditional clothes made in Chiang Mai\, Thailand. The clothing is designed by Japanese haute couture designer Usaburo Sato with fabrics made by the caring hands of the Thai people. The fabrics are mostly made of hand-spun cotton\, silk and hemp\, picked in mountains and villages\, naturally dyed from plants and fruits\, then made into clothes with traditional weaving machines by women in local villages of north and northeast Thailand and Laos. The attention\, time and passion put into the creation of these clothes give it a sense of energy that can be felt on your body and in your soul. Soft and warm\, relaxing wears suitable for both outside and home. \nAll fabrics are once gathered at “USAATO SIAM” in Chiang Mai and then delivered for the sewing process. USAATO clothes are sewn by individuals and groups outbound Chiang Mai\, not by the company’s factory. (One part of our products is from machine-weaving.) \nThe products are mostly women’s clothes but men’s clothes\, children’s clothes\, samue (monk’s working clothes)\, and rakui (pajamas) are also available. Approximate prices for tops are from $70 to $180 while bottoms are from $90 to $180. \nUSAATO clothes are selling all over the world at pop-up exhibitions organized by USAATO partners called coordinators. USSATO NEW YORK will hold exhibitions every few months at CRS. \nWearing hemp clothing promotes personal health in a variety of ways. Hemp/ cotton blends are both more absorbent humid and more mildew resistant than 100% cotton. Fabric made using 50% or higher of hemp will block more UV rays than non-hemp fabrics. And have you ever noticed that hemp-made garments don’t create static? That is because hemp has the same net static charge as human skin\, resonating perfectly with our electromagnetic fields. \nFollowing the exhibition there will be a concert by world musician Chakkiri at 7 pm. Chakkiri plays using numerous instruments\, some of them he made himself and many collected in his global travels\, that produce beautiful tones. He learned Classical Indian Raga Music from Kishor Gosh\, who studied under world-renowned Ravi Shankar. He has been in on a journey to create and share borderless music drawing improvisationally on various traditional music forms and contemporary styles to create musical conversations from spirit and of the moment. He also regularly teachers workshops and offers own unique form of music therapy. \nEnjoy Organic clothes and soul-shaking sound! \nContact : CRS 212-677-8621　or 914-703-8018 Senko or universalcreation1000@gmail.com \nhttp://www.usaato.com

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Concert Series: Azalea — Music by Quiet Revolution (Ki Young & gamin)
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Azalea\, an intimate evening of music composed by Ki Young Kim and performed by Quiet Revolution (musicians Ki Young Kim and gamin of Korea) in the award-winning White Room at CRS on Friday\, July 27\, 2018 at 8 pm. Azalea is the inaugural program of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series curated by Gamin. \nKi Young (claves and voice) and Gamin (saenghwang and piri) are renowned for carrying Korean traditional music into the present\, inciting an irresistible dialog between classic and contemporary. “Gamin is…a true pioneer and innovator\, leading these instruments in exciting new directions” — Ralph Samuelson (senior advisor\, Asian Cultural Council). \nTickets are $20 in advance\, $25 on the day of the concert\, and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Tickets for students and seniors (65+) with valid ID are available at the door for $15. Seating is limited. \nThe Program \nAll works are composed or transcribed by Ki Young Kim. \nAzaleas (saenghwang\, poetry)\nAzaleas by poets Sowol Kim and Dong Yeop Shin. This poetry symbolizes Korean sorrow\, regret and despair. Submissiveness becomes strength\, surrender becomes hope. Through meditative musical phrases\, transcendance grows. \nThe Mountain’s Angry Cry (piri solo)\nBased on a traditional folk song. One sings standing on the mountain and competes with the spirit of the mountain. Today the song becomes a weeping lament because the mountain has become bare and dry. \nSpeed and Silence (saenghwang\, claves\, voice)\nThis composition is inspired by the picture of a city\, quiet and peaceful\, prior to gentrification. \nCROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA will provide musicians from Korea with space to experiment with the new\, to collaborate across genres\, cultures and disciplines\, and to explore new ways of using creative communication to facilitate a shared practice of presence. The goal will be to dissolve boundaries between performers and audiences\, the traditional and contemporary\, classical and experimental\, Korea and the world. Participants in the series are encouraged to incorporate meditation\, improvisation\, and collaborations with visual and movement-based artists as well as musical artists from different traditions. Performances will take place in the award-winning White Room (named by Homes to Love as one of nine yoga studios around the world “that achieve design nirvana”) at CRS designed in 2015 by Clouds AO. \nCROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA will be curated by gamin  (piri\, taepyeonso\, saenghwang). Two future programs of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series are currently scheduled: \nFriday\, September 14\, 2018 at 8 pm\nYut Nori:  Contemporary conceptual art and music\ncomposed by Hyojee Kang \nFriday\, November 9\, 2018 at 8 pm\n7 words chanting_Yeongsanheosang:  Korean traditional music concert\npiri\, saenghwang by gamin\nhaegeum by Minkyung Park \nAbout the Artists \ngamin \ngamin is a yisuja of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 46 for piri and daechita. gamin is one of the most celebrated piri\, taepyeongso (Korean traditional oboe family) and saengwhang (ancient wind-blow instrument) performers in Korea today. From 2000 to 2010\, she was a member and assistant principal player of the Contemporary Gukak Orchestra at the National Gukak Center\, the hub for training and preserving Korean traditional music. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for the Exhibition “Love Planet” by yukko*
DESCRIPTION:CRS invites you to an Opening Reception on July 7\, 2018 from 5 – 7 pm for the exhibition Love Planet —  sending love of the plants all over the world through photography\, by photographer yukko＊. There will be live music by the artist. The exhibition will open Saturday\, July 7\, 2018 and will remain on view through August 30\, 2018. \nExhibition Concept \n‘Love Planet Project’ was created by photographer yukko＊ to share love of plants all over the world through photography. \nBeing transferred to the suburb to work as a staff in charge of tourism she started to take photographs as a part of her work. It did not take long for her to be absorbed in photography and she came to recognize that photos reflect what the photographer sees and feels. \nShe experienced depression during her next career in the government and decided to quit\, and started her new career as a photographer in Osaka. \nNow she holds photo exhibitions in various places in Japan as well as photo classes and portrait shooting.  She also works as a personal fashion-consultant and also as a singer.  She is an integrated artist supporting people to live honest to their nature. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: CODE — a drawing like poetry like drawing
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents CODE — a drawing like poetry like drawing\, an exhibition of small works on paper by visual artist and poet Teo Yamamoto. The exhibition will open Saturday\, June 9\, 2018 and will remain on view through July 5\, 2018. An Opening Reception with poetry reading by the artist will be held on June 9 from 6 – 8 pm. \nThe types and combinations of ink and paper are a secret\, an alchemical code discovered through much labor and treasured by the artist for its synergistic luminescence. The subjects\, too\, suggest codes\, celestial constellations flickering incompletely into view\, half-decoded ideograms tuned in from some scrambled frequency broadcast perhaps by nature itself\, like the mysterious photons emitted by all DNA. Look closer and you’ll find that the suggested figures and structures themselves are built up out of smaller code-like patterns of similar shapes. Sometimes we sense a pattern without recognizing it. Sometimes one person’s pattern is another’s noise. What’s organic at one level may appear mechanistic up close. In Yamamoto’s work\, the familiar visual distinctions between the organic and inorganic\, and between the patterned and the chaotic break down. \nArtist Statement \nI’m a poet as well as a visual artist. Since I was little\, I began drawing pictures instinctively\, just as naturally as talking to myself. \nI am fascinated with “dots’ and the way dots connect to each other to become a “line.” Lines attract me even more. I am always impressed that the world\, as I see it\, is made up of lines. These lines\, straight or curved\, intersect\, merge and mix\, creating new forms\, morphing into geometric shaped objects. \nIn my mind’s eye these objects change their scale\, their distance and speed\, floating\, hovering\, then pass by\, disappear\, pop and freeze. They hold codes for me to decipher. \nAnimals\, plants\, stones\, clouds\, my love of the natural world all motivate me to make art. So\, too\, my awe of man-made marvels and creations like skyscrapers\, brick buildings\, stone churches\, common houses\, boats and roads inspire me immeasurably. \nI have been writing poems for a long time and started creating visual poetry in 2007. Through accumulated experience\, I discovered how to draw pictures using the same techniques and processes for writing poetry. I shift my focus inward to my mind\, and as I do\, objects become simplified; their meanings dissolve and float in space. Then\, slowly\, the freely structured poetic world is revealed. \nIn pockets\, I believe everyone holds a key that can open them to both see and feel my art. I wish that when people look at my drawings they can also enjoy a poetic experience. \nAbout Teo Yamamoto \nTeo Yamamoto was born in Japan and has been living in New York City since 1988. She has been producing and publishing a variety of art and has been involved as visual artist\, designer\, poet and writer with many projects based in New York\, Tokyo\, and Europe. \n“CODE – a drawing like poetry like drawing” is an on-going series that Yamamoto began creating in 2007 and exhibiting in 2011 and continues to the present. As the title suggests\, Yamamoto focuses on the secret of drawing pictures as if writing poetry. Exhibitions of the CODE series have been held in New York\, Paris and Tokyo. Yamamoto’s works of visual poetry and objet d’art have also been shown in various group shows. \nAs a poet\, Yamamoto has published several books of poetry\, including her bilingual Japanese and English collections An Ordinary Tomorrow and Funny Tail\, which also feature her exquisite drawings. She performs her readings with live music collaborations. \nTwo of her earlier books of poems\, Running God and Blue Elf Weed\, were published in Japan. She also produced a series of chapbooks\, including  CODE\, which was issued in conjunction with her first exhibition at CRS in 2011. The series of her visual poetry called “Breath” was published in the poetry magazine Gui. \nhttp://teoyamamoto.com/

SUMMARY:CRS Summer Solstice Healing Circle: Prayer\, Sound Meditation + Whirling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Summer Solstice Healing Circle led by Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko and CRS co-founders Yasuko Kasaki & Christopher Pelham with crystal singing bowl meditation by Miyoko Satoh. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. Through meditation\, prayer\, drumming\, singing\, and the whirling dance of the sufis\, we join together in unity and experience our limitlessness. Our circles are held on the third Thursday of the month at CRS.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: One Art One Spirit
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents “One Art One Spirit (一音一絵)\,” a group exhibition of photography by Chakkiri\, pastel paintings by Sakurako Kataoka\, salt paintings by Senko Nishimura\, and recycled fiber art by Saco Yasuma. The exhibition will open on May 11\, 2018 with a concert by Kevin Nathanial and Tomchess and post-concert reception and will be on view until June 6\, 2018. There will also be a Reception and musical concert with the artists\, including a duet by Chakkiri and Sakurako\, on June 4\, 2018 from 7 – 9 pm following the USAATO natural clothing exhibition that afternoon. \nONE ART ONE SPIRIT ARTIST STATEMENT \nThere is an artist in everyone. Everyone is an artist! We just need to feel safe and brave enough to give ourselves permission to access and share our creativity. \nBe Inspired\, Be Creative\, Accept Ourselves\, and Enjoy! \nThis is an unusual art exhibition for CRS because none of the participating artists are so-called “Professional Visual Artists.” \nWe wanted more people to change their mindset and free themselves of limitations to wake up the artists within them since it is FUN and good for our hearts. We kept experiencing that when we are genuinely enjoying what we love\, a ripple of happiness spreads and bcomes amplified. So we have decided to show our art in public as it is. \nAt the reception\, One Note One Spirit\, our sister group\, will create a fun and safe space for everyone who attends to play music. We hope this show will encourage people to be creative and happy by enjoying making art and music! \n

SUMMARY:USAATO Clothing Exhibition & Sale
DESCRIPTION:CRS welcomes you to the third exhibition of USAATO clothing at CRS on June 4 and 5\, 2018! Designer Mr. Usaburo will attend and will personally help to select and coordinate the garments that would suit you best. \nJune 4 from 1 – 6 pm and June 5 from 12 – 5 pm in the White Room \nUSAATO shares beautiful traditional clothes made in Chiang Mai\, Thailand. \nWe will have a music performance from 7pm in the CRS 2nd FL Studio. Performer Chakiri is a disciple of the world famous sitar player Rabbi Shankar. Chakkiri plays using numerous instruments\, some of them he made himself and many collected in his global travels\, that produce beautiful tones. Sakurako Kataoka will dance with his music. \nEnjoy Organic clothes and soul-shaking sound! \nContact : CRS 212-677-8621　or 914-703-8018 Senko or universalcreation1000@gmail.com \nhttp://www.usaato.com
