SUMMARY:Exhibition: Space Beyond — Speculative Works by Clouds AO
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is delighted to announce an exhibition of designs by Clouds AO\, the award-winning designers of our new third-floor facilities. Their design for our White Room was recently named one of “nine yoga studios that achieve design nirvana” by HOMESTOLOVE magazine. The two-part\, floor-to-ceiling installation in this exhibition is intended to expand the window-less lobby space of CRS and create a vision of “Space Beyond” where speculative concepts are presented in architectural scale\, integrated into the underlying structure of the space. The exhibition opens Dec 23\, 2015 and runs through January 31\, 2016. An Opening Reception with Clouds AO architects Masayuki Sono and Ostap Rudakevych will be held on January 23\, 2016. \nCloud Skippers (North wall):\nImagine a community of adventurous pioneers who leave the Earth’s surface to drift and glide amongst the clouds in machine-like dwellings. By employing large wings\, Cloud Skippers hitch the constant winds of the jet stream\, lifting entire communities to the clouds. Cloud Skippers glean the bounties of the Earth’s atmosphere\, employing electricity-generating wind turbines along with large funnels for the collection rainwater. \nFive Twenty Minus Five (South wall):\nAfter fifty years in operation and retiring from its service\, we propose the 520 floating bridge located in Lake Washington in Seattle to be submerged five centimeters below water to transform it to subsurface pedestrian walkway\, next to its newly built traffic bridge. By enabling visitors to appear to be mysteriously treading on water\, the old 520 creates a unique experience that questions our relationship & create intimate collisions with nature. \nClouds AO Artist Statement\nArchitecture has become a discipline obsessed with form making. Our explorations focus on the potential of the immaterial. We are interested in the experiential qualities of architecture\, ways in which form and material can elicit lasting emotional or cognitive revelation. To achieve such an architecture requires careful attention to the unique parameters of each project. Research and analysis are distilled\, with relevant facts materialized. Our goal is to create conditions that allow for a resonant experience by the synthesis of ideas through design. \nClouds AO Profile\nClouds Architecture Office has produced a number of built and speculative projects distilled from research and analysis that explores the intersection between conceptual and experiential approaches to the built environment. Their work includes the publication of ‘Third Sphere\,’ an article describing a suspended city based on the principle of the space elevator (Kerb Journal\, 2012) and ‘Comet Runner‘ which envisioned harnessing a comet for interplanetary exploration (Dezeen\, 2015). In 2014\, they were nominated for the Iakov Chernikhov Prize\, and in 2015 Clouds AO received the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter Honor Award\, and First Prize in NASA’s Centennial Challenges: 3-D Printed Habitat for Mars.

SUMMARY:FREE New Year's Eve Guided Meditation & Yoga
DESCRIPTION:At the end of each year\, CRS Founder Yasuko Kasaki offers a FREE one-hour Guided Meditation\, drawing on the principles of A Course in Miracles\, so that we can all begin the new year with a clear mind. This year she’ll also lead everyone through an introductory exercise in spiritual reading so that each of you may come away with some inspirational message from your inner teacher. The meditation will last about an hour and will be followed by a short yoga class\, led by CRS Yoga Instructor Hazuki Homma. You are welcome to attend either or both as long as there is room. \nIt’s usually standing-room only so you’ll want to arrive a few minutes early. No previous experience with meditation or yoga is necessary. \nYou can listen to a recording of a previous New Year’s meditation here:http://crsny.podbean.com/2011/01/04/acim-guided-meditation-dec-31-2010 \nThe yoga class will draw on gentle breathing exercises and beginner level asanas to get us moving again and bring our mental presence of mind into our awareness of our bodies. The class will be more physical than in past years but still simple enough for people of any experience level with yoga…and  while clothing you can move well in will be more comfortable\, if you are wearing festive attire you should still be able to adapt. Yoga mats will be provided.

SUMMARY:The Law in These Parts (film screening) 1/11
DESCRIPTION:CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to join artist Yoshiko Chuma to screen and discuss the award-winning Israeli documentary “THE LAW IN THESE PARTS” on Friday\, January 11\, 2013 at 7 pm.\nThe film investigates the legal structure developed by Israel to govern the Palestinian territories seized by Israel during the 1967 Six Days War and subsequently controlled by Israel. \nFollowing the screening\, choreographer Yoshiko Chuma\, who has worked repeatedly in the Middle East and recently in the Occupied Territories and on international tour with members of the Palestinian dance company El-Funoun\, will lead an informal discussion of the film and describe her own efforts to shed light on the plight of the people of Palestine and to help their voices to be heard. Our intention is to facilitate a thoughtful\, respectful\, and compassionate conversation about the issues explored in the film.\nTickets are $10 and are available at CRS and online here. \nAbout the Film\n“THE LAW IN THESE PARTS” (Israel • 2011) runs 101 minutes and is in Hebrew with English subtitles.\n	http://www.thelawfilm.com/\nWhat is legal and what is just? The wide gap between the two is explored meticulously by this Israeli investigation (winner of the Best Documentary Award at the Sundance and Jerusalem Film Festivals) of the legal structure created after the 1967 Six Days War\, specifically to treat the West Bank and Gaza Strip as occupied territories. Speaking with some of Israel’s most respected lawyers and judges – men who helped to craft and later interpret these laws –  filmmaker Ra’anan Alexandrowicz asks tough\, pointed questions and gets even tougher answers. He asks his subjects to consider the consequences of their actions in a highly politicized environment. THE LAW IN THESE PARTS takes the position that unjust laws create unjust realities. Laws that everyone admits are not perfect but are the best that can be done under difficult circumstances may result in tragedy for everyone: both the judges and the judged.\n  \nAbout Guest Host Yoshiko Chuma\n“When you meet other cultures\, you focus on how different you are\, but eventually you realize that you are not so different. Creation begins by looking at that gap. And that gap was what made me an artist.” — Yoshiko Chuma\, Founder of The School of Hard Knocks\nIn April\, 2011\, avant-garde choreographer Yoshiko Chuma completed 6 Seconds in Ramallah in Palestine\, a project that involved fifteen artists from Japan and the US\, who traveled over several borders to Ramallah\, to collaborate with Palestinian Dance Troupe El-Funoun.  After returning home\, the collaborators all felt tremendous excitement and thrill\, having made something that was more than a preconceived notion of theater or dance work Since then\, that project has provided the seeds for Love Story\, Palestine\, a theater work framed by barbed wire\, a mosaic of segments whose contents pertain to pain. \n	http://www.yoshikochuma.org\n	http://www.occupationlayer.blogspot.com/\n	https://sites.google.com/site/yoshikochumanoorabaker/   in japanese\nReviews of the Film\n“Presents a devastating case against the occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. An inquiry into justice.”\n	– Rachel Saltz\, The New York Times\n“Exacting and heartfelt. Thoughtful\, thorough\, and powerfully persuasive. A powerful piece of advocacy. There is no shortage of European-funded Israeli documentaries making the festival and art-house rounds and angrily putting Israel’s occupation of the West Bank under the microscope but THE LAW IN THESE PARTS  stands out as a paragon.”\n	– Jonathan Robbins\, Film Comment\n“Riveting! There is no mistaking the indignation of the filmmaker’s inquiry into Israeli occupation policy\, but it’s tempered at every turn by Alexandrowicz’s wise\, repeated acknowledgement that there’s no implicating the policies of these men without implicating himself – that is\, without his acknowledging that these laws were written for Israelis.”\n	– Steve MacFarlane\, Slant Magazine\n“It is riveting! More than accomplishes its goal of provoking a discussion about imposing laws on people who have no say in making them.”\n	– Farran Smith Nehme\, New York Post\n“A really fascinating\, meticulous kind of dissection of how the law in the occupied territories came to be.”\n	– Kenneth Turan\, NPR\n“A thoughtful investigation into Israel’s justice system. The film includes some amazing testimony from legal officials who remain steadfast in their discriminatory policies where ‘security comes before human rights.’”\n	– Anthony Kaufman\, Indiewire\n“The film depicts\, graphically and painfully\, how it is possible for the highly educated to impose a system of oppression while remaining under the illusion that what they are doing is compatible with the highest legal principles.”\n	– Nick Fraser\, The Observer (London)\n“An engrossing new Israeli documentary…The film has generated enormous interest in Israel\, screening in more than 100 locations and receiving the prize for best documentary at the 2011 Jerusalem Film Festival. Of course\, the warm reception also underscores a paradox: while many Israelis seem open and even sympathetic to critical examinations of the occupation\, no political constituency has emerged to challenge the creeping colonization of East Jerusalem and the West Bank.”\n	– Eyal Press\, New York Review of Books Online

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Family Diary by Mami
DESCRIPTION:“Usually my husband works until very late every night\, and the kids and I are already bed when he comes home. I felt we didn’t have enough time to talk\, so I began keeping an illustrated diary in which I could share with him what was going on in our lives.  In this diary I would record what we did\, felt\, thought or planned for the future\, etc. When he comes home each night\, he opens the diary and receives some impression of our day and can feel closer to us. Recently\, our five-year-old son began wanting to draw in this diary and join in this communication.” — Mami\nBy sharing a glimpse of Mami’s family’s personal diary with you\, we hope you might be reminded that creativity can enrich any kind of communication or daily activity and  overcome obstacles to intimacy. Maybe you might also be inspired to use your creativity and love in some way to draw closer with the people in your lives. — CRS

SUMMARY:The Atomic States of America (film screening) 1/12
DESCRIPTION:CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to join Shut Down Indian Point Now activist Chris Williams to screen the anti-nuclear documentary “THE ATOMIC STATES OF AMERICA” on Saturday\, January 12\, 2013 at 7 pm. \n“The Atomic States of America\,” by filmmakers Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce of 9.14 Pictures\, journeys to nuclear reactor communities around the country to provide a comprehensive exploration of the history and impact to date of nuclear power\, and to investigate the truths and myths about nuclear energy.\nTickets are $10 and are available at CRS and online here. \nIn 2010\, the United States approved the first new nuclear power plant in 32 years\, heralding a “Nuclear Renaissance.” But that was before the Fukushima accident in Japan renewed a fierce public debate over the safety and viability of nuclear power.\nFrom the gates of Three Mile Island\, to the cooling ponds of Braidwood\, IL\, the film introduces people who have been on the front lines of this issue for decades: community advocates\, investigative journalists\, renowned physicists\, nuclear engineers\, Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors\, and former government leaders.\nBased in part on Kelly McMasters’ book Welcome to Shirley:  A Memoir from an Atomic Town\, about growing up in the shadow of the Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island\, the film explores the health consequences documented by people living in Shirley\, as well as near other nuclear facilities. Shirley\, Long Island\, has been plagued for decades by leaks of toxic nuclear and chemical waste from the National Lab into the aquifer from which the residents unknowingly drew their well water. Their concerns call into question who can be trusted to provide truthful information\, and how much influence the nuclear industry has over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and its decisions.\nAs the nation stands at the crossroads of a possible Nuclear Renaissance\, The Atomic States of America inspires informed discussion on the safety\, viability and future of nuclear power in the United States.\nGuest speaker Chris Williams is a longtime environmental activist who teaches courses in physics and energy and the environment at Pace University in the dept. of chemical and physical science. He is author of the 2010 book Ecology and Socialism: Solutions to Capitalist Ecological Crisis. Science dept. chair at Packer Collegiate Institute.\nView the trailer:\n	  \nREVIEWS\n“In the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan\,The Atomic States of America casts a timely inquiry into the viability of nuclear energy.”\n	-Outside Magazine\n“A stimulating\, well-made piece. A sobering documentary about the dangers of nuclear reactors and a downsized Nuclear Regulatory Commission.”\n	-Hollywood Reporter\n“Reasoned and worth engaging… The film builds a convincing statistical case about cancer and nukes.”\n	-Variety\n“Potent\, emotionally powerful\, and highly revealing\, … does an outstanding job of opening our eyes to the reality of nuclear power. Acutely topical….The Atomic States of America convincingly encapsulates both the history of this allegedly clean source of energy and our collective denial of a potentially looming disaster at our aging sites.”\n	-Sundance Film Festival\n“Exceptionally artistic in its storytelling and vision.”\n	-Bradford Pearson\, Frontrow.com \nAWARDS & SCREENINGS\nScreened at Sundance Film Festival\nOfficial Selection\n	Hamptons International Film Festival\n	Sarasota Film Festival\n	Seattle International Film Festival\n	Dallas International Film Festival\n	Independent Film Festival Boston\n	Philadelphia Film Festival\n	Montclair Film Festival\n	Southside Film Festival\n	Newport Beach Film Festival

SUMMARY:Living A Course in Miracles
DESCRIPTION:Living A Course in Miracles\n	a ten-week course\n	Taught by Rommel Malabanan\n	Wed from 7 – 8:30 pm starting Jan 9\nSingle class $20/ 10-class cards $170\n	walk-ins welcomeRegister online\nCRS is delighted to announce that Rommel Malabanan will begin teaching Living A Course in Miracles\, an ACIM class tailored for people new to the Course\, starting January 9 at CRS! \nIn this class you can learn where the Course came from\, what it is\, what it says\, and how you can have miracles occur naturally in your life. In these ten weeks\, you will read and discuss chapter one of the ACIM Textbook\, practice guided meditations\, do the first ACIM Workbook lessons\, and learn how to receive messages from your own internal teacher.\nRommel has been a personal trainer and boxing coach in NYC since 1996. A former competitive boxer and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor\, he has owned and operated a personal training business and a boxing gym. He was also a former president of a not-for-profit organization helping the people in Atimonan Quezon\, in the Philippines. A strong desire to help people lead more healthy lives led him into the fitness and wellness field. Over the years\, he realized that taking people through workouts was just not enough\, and so during his mid twenties he began searching for more effective ways to help his clients achieve the results they sought.\nAfter years of participating in seminar after seminar\, reading self-help book after book\, he finally realized that it was he himself who needed help the most. Only then\, when he asked for help for himself\, did an appropriate tool for healing appear:  A Course in Miracles. Since he found CRS and began studying the Course there with Yasuko Kasaki in 2011\, he has experienced so many miracles in his life and has dedicated himself to helping others do the same. Through his life coaching practice and his own A Course in Miracles classes\, he hopes you may join him in remembering who you really are and recovering your peace of mind so that you\, too\, may become a miracle worker.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Works from the CRS Collection
DESCRIPTION:CRS is delighted to announce an exhibition of works from its private collection by three female Japanese artists (photographers Miori Inata and Mayumi Nashida and painter Chiharu Nishiyama) who are friends of CRS and widely active in the global art world. The exhibition will be on display from January 22 – February 26\, 2013.\n \n西山千晴 / Chiharu Nishiyama\nChiharu Nishiyama is a painter who has participated in numerous international exhibitions in Europe as well as in Japan. Her inspiration is essentially religious and philosophical. This painting of a unicorn was created by Chiharu specifically for CRS and the beautiful frame carefully chosen to compliment it.\nThrough Chiharu Nishiyama\, we meet the tradition and spirit of the Orient\, and witness a more original\, formative revival. The natural features of Japan that she depicts are neither mere scenery\, people\, nor buildings. They are imbued with the very breath of the spirit and gods that give life to the hearts and minds of the Japanese. \n	— from Paul Ambile’s profile of Nishimura for Art Maison International\nBorn in Tokyo\, Japan\, Chiharu majored in acrylic painting. Her work has won numerous awards including the Joan of Arc Glory Prize at the International Art Festival 2004 Chateau de Blois\, the Côte d’Azur International Art Award at the 2004 Cannes International Arts Festival\, the Avignon Festival award in 2004\, the International Art Exhibition of Contemporary Art Achievement Award 2005\, the Award OASISU International 2006 from Malta Tourism Minister Francis Zammit-Dimetchi\, III Prize exhibition at the Auditorium Maurice label Arts Festival Japan 2007 Monaco from Rainier III of Monaco\, and Winner Le Salon in 2001 2002\, 2003\, 2005\, 2006. She is an officially recognized painter A.M.S.C. 2005\, a Spanish National Prado Museum Foundation member in 2005\, and a Japan International Artists Association member JIAS 2007.\nhttp://nishiyama-chiharu.com\n \n稲田美織 / Miori Inata\nMiori Inata’s photographs have been exhibited widely at galleries in Japan as well as in NY\, NJ\, and Israel. Her work appears in the Harvard University Fidelity Photography Collection and has been published by Random House – Kodansha and by Vogue Japan. She has a B.A. in Art specializing in oil painting and printing from Tama Art University of Tokyo\, Japan and later attended the Southampton College L.I.U. Photography Workshop.\nI take pictures to capture a moment of beauty. I like to take photographs of an object as it appears at the moment. I want to preserve a particular moment\, a moment that will never happen again in exactly the same way. This idea comes from the Japanese “Chado” (the tea ceremony) — the idea that weather\, light\, season and time are changing all the time. All things exist by chance\, yet I believe that they are connected to each other by inevitable coincidences. Therefore\, I appreciate the fact that I can be present at that moment. I have also traveled extensively throughout the world expanding my awareness and catching moments of particular light in different settings. Wherever I travel\, the world in my photography is very quiet and peaceful. I hope people will love the earth more with my photos of the beauty in the world. — Miori Inata \nhttps://www.facebook.com/MioriInata\n \n梨子田 まゆみ / Mayumi Nashida\nMayumi Nashida is a professional photographer based in NYC since 1993. She specializes in photographing musicians\, artists\, and actors. She has shot Aerosmith\, The Rolling Stones\, U2\, Yoko Ono\, Celine Dion\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Tool\, The Strokes\, Bruce Springsteen\, Billy Joel\, James Blunt\, Oasis\, Richard Gere\, and many others.\nPrior to moving to the US\, she worked as creative coordinator for Sony Music\, where it was her job to assemble CD jackets and promotional materials for Sony musicians. While there\, she taught herself photography.\nhttp://mayuminashida.com

SUMMARY:Genetic Roulette—The Gamble of Our Lives (film screening) - 4/12
DESCRIPTION:Shocking. Life-Changing. You won’t look at food the same way again. “Genetic Roulette—The Gamble of Our Lives” exposes the dirt behind Big-Biotech’s Big failed experiment.\nOn Friday\, April 12\, 2013 at 7:30 pm\, CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to screen and discuss “Genetic Roulette\,” (85 min) a film by Jeffrey M. Smith\, author of one of the world’s best-selling books on GMOs\, Seeds of Deception\, and narrated by Lisa Oz\, daughter of the famed Dr. Oz.\nThe screening is FREE but seating is limited. RSVPing does NOT guarantee a chair!\n“Jeffrey Smith’s mesmerizing film shines a bright light of hope that we can reclaim our health and our food systems.  Meticulously documented\, thoroughly comprehensive\, and rivetingly presented\, this is more than an adventure story with intense drama and high stakes.  It is in fact one of the most important stories ever told.  Watch it and be galvanized\, inspired\, and engaged.  Then tell everyone you know.” —  John Robbins\, author of Diet for a New America\, Founder and Board Chair Emeritus of EarthSave International\nNEVER-BEFORE-SEEN EVIDENCE points to genetically engineered foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the US population\, especially among children. Gastrointestinal disorders\, allergies\, inflammatory diseases\, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans\, pets\, livestock\, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn.\nMonsanto’s strong arm tactics\, the FDA’s fraudulent policies\, and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency are also laid bare. This sometimes shocking film may change your diet\, protect you and your family\, and accelerate the consumer tipping point against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) already underway. Don’t miss this film!\n“Genetic Roulette—The Gamble of Our Lives” was just awarded the Top Transformational Film of 2012 by AwareGuide! \nHome \n \nHome \n\nFILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL provides a forum for local and independent filmmakers to share and discuss their work and ideas.
http://www.crsny.org/film
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-FILM-VIDEO-SHOW-TELL/

SUMMARY:Seeds of Freedom (film screening & dance) - 3/16
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 16\, 2013 at 7 pm\, CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to screen and discuss the documentary film “Seeds of Freedom\,” (30 min). Prior to the screening\, African dancer Juri Nishio will offer a short dance performance as a prayer to the farmers of Africa. \nThis program is a fundraiser for educational scholarships for children of the Samburu People of N’Donyo Wasin\, Kenya organized by photograph Katherine Abegg in conduction with her current solo exhibition at CRS of her recent photographs of the Samburu people.\nNarrated by Jeremy Irons\, “Seeds of Freedom” is a landmark film from The Gaia Foundation and African Biodiversity Network. The story of seed has become one of loss\, control\, dependence and debt. It’s been written by those who want to make vast profit from our food system\, no matter what the true cost. It’s time to change the story.\n“Seeds of Freedom” charts the story of seed from its place at the heart of traditional\, diversity-rich farming systems across the world\, to its transformation into a powerful commodity\, used to monopolise the global food system.\nThe screening is FREE but seating is limited. RSVPing does NOT guarantee a chair!\nThe film highlights the extent to which the industrial agricultural system\, and genetically modified (GM) seeds in particular\, have impacted on the enormous agro-biodiversity evolved by farmers and communities around the world\, since the beginning of agriculture. Seeds of Freedom seeks to challenge the mantra (promoted by the pro-GM lobby) that large-scale\, industrial agriculture is the only means by which we can feed the world. In tracking the story of seed it becomes clear how the corporate agenda has driven the takeover of seed in order to make vast profit and control of the global food system.\nThrough interviews with leading international experts including Dr Vandana Shiva and Henk Hobbelink\, UK political figures Zac Goldsmith MP and Caroline Lucas MP\, and through the voices of a number of African farmers\, the film highlights how the loss of indigenous seed goes hand in hand with loss of biodiversity and related knowledge; the loss of cultural traditions and practices; the loss of livelihoods; and the loss of food sovereignty. The pressure from agribusiness interests is growing and threatens to replace the diverse\, nutritional\, locally adapted and resilient seed crops which have been bred by small-scale farmers for millennia.\nAbout Choreographer/Dancer Juri Nishio\n	Juri Nishio is a performance artist living in Brooklyn\, NY. She was born and raised in Tokyo\, Japan and graduated from Nihon University of Art with a degree in drama.\n	Her dance journey began in 2000 when Juri visited Senegal to participate in workshop with the family of the renown drummer Doudou N’Diaye Rose. She came to NY 2003 to investigate contemporary African Dance forms and in 2006 completed the International Student Independent Study program at The Ailey School.\n	Her work includes choreographed dances with Germain Acgoney\, Nora Chipaumire\, Camille A Brown\, theUrban Bush Women Apprenticeship program\, M’WORD! (N’Bewe Escobar)\, INSPIRIT\, a dance company (Christal N Brown)\, and Maimouna Keita School of African Dance (Marie Basse Wiles). She is currently dancing with Vangeline.\n	She has presented her solo works at Laguardia Comm. College\, Daibosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji\, Charles Moore Dance Theater\, Spring Field college\, Trinity College\, CRS\, The Ailey School\, Bowery Poetry Club and Hunter College.\nAbout Producer/Director Jess Phillimore\nJess Phillimore is a freelance filmmaker who has been working with The Gaia Foundation and the African Biodiversity Network since 2009. Previous short films produced with Gaia and ABN include The Kamburu Story (Kenya) and Reviving Our Culture\, Mapping Our Future (Venda\, South Africa). Having studied Genetics at the University of Edinburgh\, Jess developed an interest in the reality of genetically modified seed and agri-business in the global south. It was out of this collaborative work and interest\, and the inspiring Climate\, Seeds & Knowledge (CSK) learning exchange which took place in Ethiopia at the close of 2010\, that Seeds of Freedom emerged. Jess has also worked on programmes for the BBC including the flagship science strand\, Horizon.\nMore about the Film\n“Seeds of Freedom” provides a critical overview of the history of agriculture\, charting the transition of the farm into a factory\, and highlighting the impact of the agro-chemical and GM industries. Ever since industry turned its attention to farming at the beginning of the 20th century\, there has been an accelerating interest in agriculture for big business. After the first and second world wars in Europe\, chemical companies sought to find a new market for their products and thereby found a new route to profit through the farm. They discovered that subtle chemical alterations to explosive and nerve agents enabled them to re-package these war chemicals into fertilisers and pesticides for crops. Later\, marrying up specific chemical fertilisers and pesticides with hybrid seed furthered the potential for profit\, ensuring that farmers must buy both seed and fertiliser for maximum yield. Increasingly the hybrid seeds were only able to produce a yield once\, thereby forcing farmers to buy seed and chemicals each year\, and moving farmers away from their traditional practices of seed selection\, saving and exchange.\n“Seeds of Freedom” seeks to give a voice to the global south\, and to those farmers and communities who are now some of the most vulnerable to the corporate (and often governmental) agenda for the adoption GM seed. Africa is now a prime target for the GM industry. On 18th May 2012 both Syngenta [1] and Monsanto [2] (the two leading GM seed corporations) released press information about increasing their commitments to agricultural development in Africa\, investing $1 billion and $50 million respectively.\nDespite the propaganda\, in 2008\, the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) report (a study by over 400 scientists from around the world) concluded that agro-ecological farming practices should shape the future of agriculture\, and that farmers have intelligently cultivated their own locally adapted\, resilient seed for millennia. A report from the ETC group in 2009 showed that small-scale farmers feed 70% of the world’s population [3]. The film’s contributors are calling on farmers and consumers around the world to join forces with the growing global movement promoting Food Sovereignty – the right and responsibility to maintain our diverse culturally appropriate\, ecologically adapted and ethically produced foods.\nAlongside speakers from indigenous farming communities\, the film features global experts and activists Dr Vandana Shiva of Navdanya\, Henk Hobbelink of GRAIN\, Zac Goldsmith MP (UK Conservative party)\, Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser\, Kumi Naidoo of Greenpeace International\, Gathuru Mburu of the African Biodiversity Network\, Liz Hosken of The Gaia Foundation and Caroline Lucas MP (UK Green party). This film is co-produced by The Gaia Foundation www.gaiafoundation.org and the African Biodiversity Network www.africanbiodiversity.org\nhttp://www.seedsoffreedom.info\n \nFILM&VIDEO SHOW & TELL provides a forum for local and independent filmmakers to share and discuss their work and ideas.
http://www.crsny.org/film
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-FILM-VIDEO-SHOW-TELL/

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Butterfly People — Photographs by Katherine Abegg
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is delighted to announce an exhibition of color photographs of the Samburu people of Kenya and their surroundings\, taken by artist Katherine Abegg. Kenya may conjure images of breathtaking vistas of forest and savannah framed by towering mountains and those are on display here\, but what truly takes one’s breath away here is the people. The openness of heart and spirit between photographer and subject is the subject of this collection.\nPlease join us for a Closing Reception with artist Katherine Abegg on Friday\, May 3\, 2013 from 7:40 – 9 pm. We need to raise an additional $625 to send one Samburo child to school next year.\nThere will be an Opening Reception with the artist on Saturday\, March 2\, 2013 from 6 – 8 pm. The exhibition will continue through May 3\, and proceeds from sales of the prints will go toward a scholarship fund to send one Samburo child to secondary school.\nAbout Katherine Abegg\nKatherine has been studying and teaching A Course In Miracles with CRS for 7 years. Through the study of ACIM\, she has learned to cultivate a creative life and to explore the world with greater courage and presence of mind. As an actor\, Katherine has performed in short films and in performance art pieces. She has worked in fashion and millinery for several years\, developing fabrics and making headpieces. She has recently ventured into the world of photography and is thrilled to have her first exhibition at CRS. More….\n \nSerien!\nThat’s Samburu for “hello.” As many of you know\, I had the opportunity to travel to Kenya last fall. I was travelling with my dear friend Linda\, who introduced me to the Samburu people. For two weeks we stayed in the village of N’Donyo Wasin\, which is several hours away from cell phone reception\, ATM machines and hot showers. We pitched tents in a downpour\, dined with (and inadvertently on) huge quantities of bugs\, quenched our thirst with warm beer and danced under the vast night sky.\n	Each day was like an era\, each minute diffused into hours by the equatorial sun. But the days were full as we read with the schoolchildren\, ventured to the outlying villages and cooked with the warriors. The Samburu people were unabashedly open and welcoming. I was immediately hooked. Their stoicism\, their dignity\, their innocence and lack of cynicism were deeply impressive and humbling. \n— Katherine Abegg
