SUMMARY:Seeds of Freedom (film screening & dance) - 3/16
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 16\, 2013 at 7 pm\, CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to screen and discuss the documentary film “Seeds of Freedom\,” (30 min). Prior to the screening\, African dancer Juri Nishio will offer a short dance performance as a prayer to the farmers of Africa. \nThis program is a fundraiser for educational scholarships for children of the Samburu People of N’Donyo Wasin\, Kenya organized by photograph Katherine Abegg in conduction with her current solo exhibition at CRS of her recent photographs of the Samburu people.\nNarrated by Jeremy Irons\, “Seeds of Freedom” is a landmark film from The Gaia Foundation and African Biodiversity Network. The story of seed has become one of loss\, control\, dependence and debt. It’s been written by those who want to make vast profit from our food system\, no matter what the true cost. It’s time to change the story.\n“Seeds of Freedom” charts the story of seed from its place at the heart of traditional\, diversity-rich farming systems across the world\, to its transformation into a powerful commodity\, used to monopolise the global food system.\nThe screening is FREE but seating is limited. RSVPing does NOT guarantee a chair!\nThe film highlights the extent to which the industrial agricultural system\, and genetically modified (GM) seeds in particular\, have impacted on the enormous agro-biodiversity evolved by farmers and communities around the world\, since the beginning of agriculture. Seeds of Freedom seeks to challenge the mantra (promoted by the pro-GM lobby) that large-scale\, industrial agriculture is the only means by which we can feed the world. In tracking the story of seed it becomes clear how the corporate agenda has driven the takeover of seed in order to make vast profit and control of the global food system.\nThrough interviews with leading international experts including Dr Vandana Shiva and Henk Hobbelink\, UK political figures Zac Goldsmith MP and Caroline Lucas MP\, and through the voices of a number of African farmers\, the film highlights how the loss of indigenous seed goes hand in hand with loss of biodiversity and related knowledge; the loss of cultural traditions and practices; the loss of livelihoods; and the loss of food sovereignty. The pressure from agribusiness interests is growing and threatens to replace the diverse\, nutritional\, locally adapted and resilient seed crops which have been bred by small-scale farmers for millennia.\nAbout Choreographer/Dancer Juri Nishio\n	Juri Nishio is a performance artist living in Brooklyn\, NY. She was born and raised in Tokyo\, Japan and graduated from Nihon University of Art with a degree in drama.\n	Her dance journey began in 2000 when Juri visited Senegal to participate in workshop with the family of the renown drummer Doudou N’Diaye Rose. She came to NY 2003 to investigate contemporary African Dance forms and in 2006 completed the International Student Independent Study program at The Ailey School.\n	Her work includes choreographed dances with Germain Acgoney\, Nora Chipaumire\, Camille A Brown\, theUrban Bush Women Apprenticeship program\, M’WORD! (N’Bewe Escobar)\, INSPIRIT\, a dance company (Christal N Brown)\, and Maimouna Keita School of African Dance (Marie Basse Wiles). She is currently dancing with Vangeline.\n	She has presented her solo works at Laguardia Comm. College\, Daibosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji\, Charles Moore Dance Theater\, Spring Field college\, Trinity College\, CRS\, The Ailey School\, Bowery Poetry Club and Hunter College.\nAbout Producer/Director Jess Phillimore\nJess Phillimore is a freelance filmmaker who has been working with The Gaia Foundation and the African Biodiversity Network since 2009. Previous short films produced with Gaia and ABN include The Kamburu Story (Kenya) and Reviving Our Culture\, Mapping Our Future (Venda\, South Africa). Having studied Genetics at the University of Edinburgh\, Jess developed an interest in the reality of genetically modified seed and agri-business in the global south. It was out of this collaborative work and interest\, and the inspiring Climate\, Seeds & Knowledge (CSK) learning exchange which took place in Ethiopia at the close of 2010\, that Seeds of Freedom emerged. Jess has also worked on programmes for the BBC including the flagship science strand\, Horizon.\nMore about the Film\n“Seeds of Freedom” provides a critical overview of the history of agriculture\, charting the transition of the farm into a factory\, and highlighting the impact of the agro-chemical and GM industries. Ever since industry turned its attention to farming at the beginning of the 20th century\, there has been an accelerating interest in agriculture for big business. After the first and second world wars in Europe\, chemical companies sought to find a new market for their products and thereby found a new route to profit through the farm. They discovered that subtle chemical alterations to explosive and nerve agents enabled them to re-package these war chemicals into fertilisers and pesticides for crops. Later\, marrying up specific chemical fertilisers and pesticides with hybrid seed furthered the potential for profit\, ensuring that farmers must buy both seed and fertiliser for maximum yield. Increasingly the hybrid seeds were only able to produce a yield once\, thereby forcing farmers to buy seed and chemicals each year\, and moving farmers away from their traditional practices of seed selection\, saving and exchange.\n“Seeds of Freedom” seeks to give a voice to the global south\, and to those farmers and communities who are now some of the most vulnerable to the corporate (and often governmental) agenda for the adoption GM seed. Africa is now a prime target for the GM industry. On 18th May 2012 both Syngenta [1] and Monsanto [2] (the two leading GM seed corporations) released press information about increasing their commitments to agricultural development in Africa\, investing $1 billion and $50 million respectively.\nDespite the propaganda\, in 2008\, the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) report (a study by over 400 scientists from around the world) concluded that agro-ecological farming practices should shape the future of agriculture\, and that farmers have intelligently cultivated their own locally adapted\, resilient seed for millennia. A report from the ETC group in 2009 showed that small-scale farmers feed 70% of the world’s population [3]. The film’s contributors are calling on farmers and consumers around the world to join forces with the growing global movement promoting Food Sovereignty – the right and responsibility to maintain our diverse culturally appropriate\, ecologically adapted and ethically produced foods.\nAlongside speakers from indigenous farming communities\, the film features global experts and activists Dr Vandana Shiva of Navdanya\, Henk Hobbelink of GRAIN\, Zac Goldsmith MP (UK Conservative party)\, Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser\, Kumi Naidoo of Greenpeace International\, Gathuru Mburu of the African Biodiversity Network\, Liz Hosken of The Gaia Foundation and Caroline Lucas MP (UK Green party). This film is co-produced by The Gaia Foundation www.gaiafoundation.org and the African Biodiversity Network www.africanbiodiversity.org\nhttp://www.seedsoffreedom.info\n \nFILM&VIDEO SHOW & TELL provides a forum for local and independent filmmakers to share and discuss their work and ideas.
http://www.crsny.org/film
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-FILM-VIDEO-SHOW-TELL/

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Butterfly People — Photographs by Katherine Abegg
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is delighted to announce an exhibition of color photographs of the Samburu people of Kenya and their surroundings\, taken by artist Katherine Abegg. Kenya may conjure images of breathtaking vistas of forest and savannah framed by towering mountains and those are on display here\, but what truly takes one’s breath away here is the people. The openness of heart and spirit between photographer and subject is the subject of this collection.\nPlease join us for a Closing Reception with artist Katherine Abegg on Friday\, May 3\, 2013 from 7:40 – 9 pm. We need to raise an additional $625 to send one Samburo child to school next year.\nThere will be an Opening Reception with the artist on Saturday\, March 2\, 2013 from 6 – 8 pm. The exhibition will continue through May 3\, and proceeds from sales of the prints will go toward a scholarship fund to send one Samburo child to secondary school.\nAbout Katherine Abegg\nKatherine has been studying and teaching A Course In Miracles with CRS for 7 years. Through the study of ACIM\, she has learned to cultivate a creative life and to explore the world with greater courage and presence of mind. As an actor\, Katherine has performed in short films and in performance art pieces. She has worked in fashion and millinery for several years\, developing fabrics and making headpieces. She has recently ventured into the world of photography and is thrilled to have her first exhibition at CRS. More….\n \nSerien!\nThat’s Samburu for “hello.” As many of you know\, I had the opportunity to travel to Kenya last fall. I was travelling with my dear friend Linda\, who introduced me to the Samburu people. For two weeks we stayed in the village of N’Donyo Wasin\, which is several hours away from cell phone reception\, ATM machines and hot showers. We pitched tents in a downpour\, dined with (and inadvertently on) huge quantities of bugs\, quenched our thirst with warm beer and danced under the vast night sky.\n	Each day was like an era\, each minute diffused into hours by the equatorial sun. But the days were full as we read with the schoolchildren\, ventured to the outlying villages and cooked with the warriors. The Samburu people were unabashedly open and welcoming. I was immediately hooked. Their stoicism\, their dignity\, their innocence and lack of cynicism were deeply impressive and humbling. \n— Katherine Abegg

SUMMARY:DIRT! The Movie (film screening) – 5/10
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 10\, 2013 at 8 pm\, CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to screen and discuss “DIRT! The Movie\,” (86 min). Narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis (in English\, with Japanese subtitles)\, “DIRT! The Movie” tells the amazing and little known story of the relationship between humans and living dirt. Natural Life Counselor Kiyomi Noda will be on hand to lead a short Q&A after the screening.\nThe screening is $5 and seating is limited. Buy tickets online! (Note: If you arrive after 8 pm\, you may still be able to enter\, but you will NOT be guaranteed a chair.)\nDIRT! takes you inside the wonders of the soil. It tells the story of Earth’s most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility–from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation.\nThe film offers a vision of a sustainable relationship between Humans and Dirt through profiles of the global visionaries who are determined to repair the damage we’ve done before it’s too late. There are many ways we can preserve the living skin of the earth for future generations. If you care about your food\, water\, the air you breathe\, your health and happiness….\nDIRT! The Movie was directed and produced by Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow and brings to life the environmental\, economic\, social and political impact that the soil has. It shares the stories of experts from all over the world who study and are able to harness the beauty and power of a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with soil.\n  \n \nWhy Dirt?\nDirt feeds us and gives us shelter. Dirt holds and cleans our water. Dirt heals us and makes us beautiful. Dirt regulates the earth’s climate. Dirt is the ultimate natural resource for all life on earth.\nYet most humans ignore\, abuse\, and destroy our most precious living natural resource.Consider the results of such behavior: mass starvation\, drought\, floods\, and global warming\, and wars. If we continue on our current path\, Dirt might find another use for humans\, as compost for future life forms.\nIt doesn’t have to be that way. Another world\, in which we treat dirt with the respect it deserves\, is possible and we’ll show you how.\nDIRT! The Movie is simply a movie about dirt. The real change lies in our notion of what dirt is. The movie teaches us: “When humans arrived 2 million years ago\, everything changed for dirt. And from that moment on\, the fate of dirt and humans has been intimately linked.” But more than the film and the lessons that it teaches\, DIRT! The Movie is a call to action.\nThe opening scenes of the film dive into the wonderment of the soil. Made from the same elements as the stars\, plants and animals\, and us\, “dirt is very much alive.” Though\, in modern industrial pursuits and clamor for both profit and natural resources\, our human connection to and respect for soil has been disrupted. “Drought\, climate change\, even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt.”\n“The only remedy for disconnecting people from the natural world is connecting them to it again.”\nWhat we’ve destroyed\, we can heal.\nhttp://www.thedirtmovie.org\nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS\n Bill Benenson: Director\, Producer\nAward-winning filmmaker. 30-plus years producing and directing experience. Champion of global welfare.\nBill’s resume includes documentaries The Marginal Way and Diamond Rivers\, as well as the critically-acclaimed narrative Mister Johnson. SUMMARY:Back to Eden (film screening) – 6/7
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 7\, 2013 at 8 pm\, CRS FILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL invites you to screen and discuss BACK TO EDEN (103 min). \nBACK TO EDEN shares the story of one man’s lifelong journey\, walking with God and learning how to get back to the simple\, productive methods of sustainable provision that were given to man in the garden of Eden. The organic growing system that has resulted from Paul Gautschi’s incredible experiences has garnered the interest of visitors from around the world. However\, never until now have Paul’s methods been documented and shared like this!\nThe screening is FREE but seating is limited. Reserve tickets online! (Note: If you arrive after 8 pm\, you may still be able to enter\, but you will NOT be guaranteed a chair).\nAfter years of back-breaking toil in ground ravaged by the effects of man-made growing systems\, Paul Gautschi has discovered a taste of what God intended for mankind in the garden of Eden. Some of the vital issues facing agriculture today include soil preparation\, fertilization\, irrigation\, weed control\, pest control\, crop rotation\, and PH issues. None of these issues exist in the unaltered state of nature or in Paul’s gardens and orchards.\nBACK TO EDEN invites you to take a walk with Paul as he teaches you sustainable organic growing methods that are capable of being implemented in diverse climates around the world.\n  \nBack to Eden Film OFFICIAL TRAILER from Dana & Sarah Films on Vimeo. \n \n  \n“Back to Eden offers not only a fresh perspective on critical environmental issues but digs deeper into true stories of experiencing faith\, seeking relationship and the power of forming community. Highlighted interviews include specialists in human ecology\, nutrition\, horticulture\, and agriculture. The production was completed in one year. With a crew of only two\, this posed the challenge of having to transition between the diverse roles of filming\, directing\, interviewing\, sound recording\, editing\, color correcting\, marketing\, digital design and more. However\, the opportunity to be involved so intimately with the entire process of creating Back to Eden Film was truly rewarding for the filmmakers.\n \nPROVISIONS PRODUCTIONS is a nomadic video production company that was co-founded in 2009 by Dana Richardson and Sarah Zentz. The production company was created from the passion for the art of filmmaking and desire to increase public awareness through film. Our team is dedicated to quality and creative productions from screen writing\, directing and producing films from shorts to features. ProVisions Productions team believes that visual communication has the power to intrigue\, impact\, and inspire any audience\, worldwide. \nFILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL provides a forum for local and independent filmmakers to share and discuss their work and ideas.
\nhttp://www.crsny.org/film
\nhttp://www.meetup.com/NYC-FILM-VIDEO-SHOW-TELL/\n \nJune 20137 8 pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Miracle Kototama Art — Calligraphy by Shisui
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is delighted to announce an exhibition of calligraphy by Tokyo-based artist Shisui. The exhibition will open on May 18 and run for eight weeks. A closing reception with the artist will be held on Saturday\, July 13\, 2013 from 4 – 6 pm.\nIn ancient Japan it was believed that words held a secret\, mysterious power. When uttered\, the sound of these words would vibrationally impact the world beyond the impact of the meaning of the word. The word for this was kototama. Likewise\, certain kanji\, or Japanese word symbols\, were also thought to possess a power to affect the world by emitting a kind of vibration or energy. In her work\, Shisui seeks to discover calligraphic shapes that\, despite appearing abstract or unfamilar in shape\, emit this kind of vibration and are recognizable by the miraculous healing power they possess and the positive feelings they provoke. \nAbout Shisui\nShisui’s art has most recently appeared in the famous spiritual magazine “Yugahul.”\nAlso in 2013\, her work was included in the book Anatanimmo kototama no kiseki ga segue okiru by Mr Sakuraba Masahumi and in the web magazine TrinityWeb.\nLast year\, she appeared on the popular web programs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n★Shisui Web Site\nhttp://miraclekototamart.jp/index.htm\n★Shisui Blog\nhttp://ameblo.jp/miraclekototamart/\nArtist Statement\nI felt in the days of my childhood that human beings were connected by their subconscious but that as we became socialized\, we were brainwashed by llusion and forgot that we all are beings that are splendid with perfection. As an adult\, I worked for more than ten years as a web designer and director\, but gradually I came to think that I’d like to express through my art work that “The soul of all people is beautiful and life is a trip of returning to love(= God).” And then I came across the Japanese ancient letters. So I’ve started my work. I hope my arts are useful for your happiness. — Shisui\nLearn moreArtist BlogArtist Web Site\nJuly 201313 4 – 6 pm

SUMMARY:Rei Qong Healing Circle — Thursday nights
DESCRIPTION:with Master Ron NaVarre\nThursdays from 8 – 9:30 pm\nresuming Sept 12\, 2013\nFee:  $25/class\nReiQongTM (Ray-Gong) is a practice that combines Reiki with Chi Qong.  This training is a self healing modality based on the traditional Japanese method of hands on healing known as Reiki\, and the Chinese meditation and breathing practice known as Chi Qong.\nTo register\, contact Ron NaVarre at 917-549-6525.\nFor more info\, visit\nhttp://www.stressdefense.com/\n \nReiki (pronounced Ray-Key ) is the Japanese word for universal life energy. Reiki is a form of spiritual healing using “universal life energy” channeled through the practitioner to the recipient. Reiki helps to harmonize body\, mind and spirit for yourself or anyone you want to help.  Reiki supports and compliments almost every kind of medication and treatment used today. It can be used to speed up healing after surgery and increase the effectiveness of most medical treatments and /or bodywork. It works well with all practices because Reiki is designed to systematically strengthen the body’s absorption and use of life force energy.\nChi Qong: Chi (breath energy) Qong (training)\, also known as Chinese yoga\, is an ancient Chinese health and meditation practice as well as the foundation for internal martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan. Based on the principle of internal energy cultivation\, Chi Qong has been taught as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and as an aid in healing and strengthening the body\, harmonizing the emotions and calming the mind.\nDeveloped by Master Ron NaVarre\, Rei Qong has been taught to cancer patients\, pre and post-surgical patients\, people recovering from acute and chronic illnesses as well as people wishing to be more proactive with their personal health and well being.\nThe technique is comprised of six unique modalities that include: breathing\, grounding\, self-massage\, Reiki\, meditation and Chi Qong. Each modality can serve as a stand alone practice or combined to create a more powerful energetic response. Rei Qong can be practiced sitting in a chair\, standing or lying down. Once the sequence is learned\, it can be performed in as little as ten minutes or as long as 45 minutes.\nThis training is a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to learn the basic practice and principals which can be applied to stress reduction\, meditation and healing.  \nLearn moreWatch VideoStress Defense\nresumes Sept 12 2013Thurs 8 – 9:30 pm

SUMMARY:GnosticNYC: Intro to A Course in Miracles 6/16
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Yasuko Kasaki & Christopher Pelham\nSunday\, June 16\, 2012 from 2 – 4 pm\nClick to Register\nA Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a psychological self study program encompassing universal spiritual themes through which one can learn to replace fearful and judgmental thoughts with loving and forgiving thoughts and thereby develop a peaceful and joyful mind. In this introductory lecture\, we will describe how the Course came into existence\, what its universal spiritual themes are\, and how the Course structure and exercises are designed to achieve its intended results. If there is time\, we will also practice a meditation exercise drawn from the Course to provide an experience of what doing the Course is actually like.\nGnosticNYC exists to promote the practice of Gnostic spirituality in New York City by providing events\, programs\, and a place to meet and worship. \nAbout the Speakers\nYasuko Kasaki\, born in Tokyo\, Japan\, is a novelist\, journalist\, spiritual counselor and teacher of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). She began offering spiritual counseling\, reading\, instruction and healing based on ACIM to individuals and groups in 1999 and in 2004 opened CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing)\, a private community center in New York City’s East Village dedicated to the teaching and practice of ACIM and the healing and creative arts. Offering ACIM-based classes\, meditation\, energy healing and private counseling (as well as lectures\, workshops\, film screenings and performances) to the public seven days a week\, CRS is the first and only school and center for ACIM in New York City. She has written 14 books on ACIM in Japanese\, published by Natural Spirit Publishing Inc\, as well as more than a dozen novels and collections of essays. Many of Ms. Kasaki’s students have also begun to offer psycho-spiritual healing and instruction at CRS and elsewhere\, outside NYC and throughout Japan. \nChristopher Pelham is Director and co-founder of CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing). He began studying A Course in Miracles with Yasuko Kasaki in 2003 and began offering spiritual healing this year. Something of a jack-of-all-trades\, he has worked as an actor\, a journalist and copy editor\, a curator and producer\, a videographer and editor\, a director\, a web designer…. He believes that we are fundamentally and essentially unlimited creative beings and that the purpose of the creative act is to share the experience of remembering this knowledge of who we really are. Therefore\, he sees art and healing as having the same function but different forms. At CRS\, he tries to facilitate both.\nLearn moreMeetup GroupGnosticNYC\nJune 201316 2 – 4 pm

SUMMARY:Black Gold (film screening) – 8/3
DESCRIPTION:Marc Francis\, Nick Francis\, 2006\nUSA | 78′ (English with Japanese subtitles)\nEver wonder who grows the beans in your morning jolt of java? On Saturday\, August 3\, 2013 at 7:30 pm\, CRS Community Films and  Think Coffee invite you to screen and discuss BLACK GOLD. In their riveting\, critically acclaimed documentary\, filmmaking brothers Nick and Marc Francis explore the complexities of the international coffee trade everywhere. Prior to the start of the screening\, there will be a reception with light refreshments from 6 – 7:30 pm.\nJoining us will be Emily Piper (MA in Food Studies) and staff from our neighbors Think Coffee to discuss their own efforts to improve the lives of coffee farmers in Ethiopia. We will be accepting donations in support of the Eleshu Kellensoo Mokonissa Primary School Library in Kellensoo\, Ethiopia funded by Think Coffee and its partners Nardos Exports & The Bushwick Seed Company.\nThe screening is FREE but there is a suggested donation of $10+. Seating is limited and first come\, first serve.\nIn conjunction with the screening\, the CRS Gallery will be exhibiting THINKING FORWARD: photographs of people showing love for and trying to improve the lives of the next generation\, taken in Kallensoo\, Ethiopia by members of the Think Coffee community and in Dhaka\, Bangladesh by Tufts University student Misako Ono. Proceeds from the sale of the photographs will also go to support the Eleshu Kellensoo Mokonissa Primary School Library in Ethiopia.\nMultinational coffee companies now rule our strip malls\, supermarkets and urban corners and dominate an industry worth over $80 billion\, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But while we pay high prices for our lattes and cappuccinos\, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their fields. No where is this paradox more evident than in Ethiopia\, the birthplace of coffee.\nMore About the Film Black Gold\nIn this movie\, we meet Tadesse Meskela\, General Manager of the Oromo Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union\, and a man on a mission to save his 75\,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality beans on the international market\, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price. \nThe challenges are complex and fair trade certifications and more favorable prices alone are insufficient to solve them. Learn from coffee buyers like those at Think Coffee who actually visit the farmers regularly and learn on the ground how we can create change that will actually improve people’s lives all along the chain of production. \nBlack Gold: Trailer from Speakit on Vimeo. \nMore About the Bushwick Seed Company’s Project to Benefit Kellensoo\nAt the Bushwick Seed Company\, we believe in forming strong relationships with the coffee communities we work with. That means that we pay a fair price for our coffee and that means that we always travel to origin.  Sometimes we go beyond that.\nThe people of Kellensoo are the first group of coffee farmers we ever sourced from. We wanted to collaborate with them on a community development project to help improve the life of the villagers.\nProject Kellensoo is the result of that collaboration. After going to the village and listening to the concerns of parents\, administrators and elders we pinpointed high drop out rates as the main area of intervention.  \nProject Partners\nProject Kellensoo is the joint venture of three companies: coffee importer The Bushwick Seed Company\, Nardos Coffee Exports and Think Coffee.  \nNardos Coffee Exports is an Ethiopian coffee exporter whose founder is from the village of Kellensoo.  \nThe Bushwick Seed Company imports coffee beans from trees they have touched and from people they know personally. They physically follow and record all of their coffee\, from the farms to the ships that deliver it\, and operate in as transparent and ethical manner as possible for the benefit of the coffee growers and the planet.\nThink Coffee is a New York-based coffee company that has bought coffee from the Kellensoo region in the past. For the past several years\, Think Coffee has been an outstanding neighbor to CRS\, contributing to the cost of our renovation in 2010 and never failing to act in a thoughtful and neighborly fashion. We are delighted to have this opportunity to collaborate with them on a project dear to their hearts and ours.\nProject Summary\nProject Kellensoo is a three-phase mission to decrease school drop-out rates in the village of Kellensoo in Southern Ethiopia.\nPhase one consists of the equipping of a library for the students of Kellensoo. Project funds will purchase tables\, chairs\, books\, bookshelves\, pens and paper to begin the supply of the library. The building will then be weatherized to ensure against any damage from the elements. Finally\, solar panels will be installed on the roof to maintain a reliable supply of power throughout the day and into the night.\nPhase two involves the creation of an IT center in the library. Project funds will be used to purchase seven computers from the United States. These computers will be shipped to Kellensoo and installed in the library.  Wireless connection will be established and the students will be able to make use of the computers to communicate all over the world.\nPhase three will address the disparity between male and female drop out rates at the school. A leading reason for female absences is an inadequate supply of feminine hygiene products. During their period\, girls have to miss school. The resulting absence is often to difficult or discouraging to make up. The project seeks to secure a reliable and sustainable supply of feminine hygiene products for the girls of Kellensoo Junior School.\n  \nFILM+VIDEO SHOW & TELL provides a forum for local and independent filmmakers to share and discuss their work and ideas.
\nhttp://www.crsny.org/film
\nhttp://www.meetup.com/NYC-FILM-VIDEO-SHOW-TELL/\n \nAugust 20133 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:Closing Reception for "Miracle Kototama Art — Calligraphy by Shisui" — 7/13
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a final opportunity to see these original calligraphy paintings by Shisui before she returns to Japan. She will be on hand to talk about the meaning of each of the works and to create original calligraphy art inspired by individual guests for them to take home\, as time permits.\nSince Shisui’s exhibition opened in May\, Shisui has made near daily visits to CRS and\, despite speaking little English\, has managed in her short time her to make many new friends. Many of the works have sold\, and her calligraphy workshops have all filled up. We scheduled additional workshops and they filled up as well. If you have not yet had the privilege of meeting Shisui\, I hope you will be able to attend and discover for yourself that the maker of these mysterious but universally appealing art works is\, not surprisingsly\, herself a luminous and inspiring figure. She has become very much a core figure of CRS and we look forward to having her back again!\nRead more about the exhibition here.\nJuly 201313 4 – 6 pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Thinking Forward (Opening Reception 8/3)
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is delighted to announce an exhibition of photographs taken in Bangladesh by Misako Ono and in Ethiopia by Emily Piper documenting specific actions this generation is taking to make the world better for the next. Photographs documenting some of the women depicted in the documentary HALF THE SKY are also included as well as photos of some of the girls who have received educational assistance from HALF THE SKY featured NGO Room to Read. The exhibition will open on August 3 and close on August 29\, 2013. An Opening Reception with the photograpers and light refreshments will be held on Saturday\, August 3\, 2013 from 6 – 7:30 pm. \nAny profits from the sale of the photographs will be donated to the Eleshu Kellensoo Mokonissa Primary School Library in Kellensoo\, Ethiopia\, which has been funded by Think Coffee and its partners Nardos Exports & The Bushwick Seed Company. Following the Opening Reception\, photographer Emily Piper will speak about the project and screen and discuss the documentary film BLACK GOLD. HALF THE SKY will be screened at CRS on August 10 from 2:30 – 7 pm.\nAbout Photographer Misako Ono\nMisako’s interest in photography began in her freshmen year of high school when she took a digital photography class. Finding passion in capturing the life around her and sharing it with others\, she furthered her learning by taking pre-college courses at Rhode Island School of Design and Pratt Institute. She is now a rising junior at Tufts University\, studying Sociology and Mass Communications while taking photographs for the campus daily newspaper and publications. This past year\, she focused on multimedia storytelling in the Program for Narrative and Documentary Practices at Tufts taught by photojournalists Gary Knight and Samuel James. Using multimedia as a platform to look at social issues\, she completed a project documenting the story of a homebirth midwife working in the Boston area\, bringing attention to this alternative process of birth. At the end of the year\, the program took her on a workshop to Dhaka\, Bangladesh\, where she created a photo essay about a mother living in the slums of the megacity. The camera is a tool for her to connect with the people she captures and to understand the world. Misako would like to keep pursuing and developing skills to become a documentary photographer.\nMisako Ono Artist Statement:\nShortly after I picked up a camera for the first time\, photography became my alternative mode of communication. It provided a creative connection that soothed and stimulated my shy nature. English was my second language\, yet sharing my photography enabled me to open up and navigate my adolescent years. My studies in college piqued an interest in social justice\, at which point I turned to predominantly documentary photography. Upon discovering the power of visual language\, I decided I wanted my photographs to tell stories and provide voices to those who are either silenced or too quiet to be heard. At the end of my sophomore year\, I was given the opportunity to travel to Bangladesh and create a documentary photo project of my choice. I chose to chronicle a housewife for my project because this single woman represents a vast population of women with every valid reason to speak up but no ability to do so. With my photos\, I hope to provide an honest look into a world that deserves awareness and a platform for people to connect and bring change to the issues.\nAbout Photographer Emily Piper\nEmily Piper recently graduated from NYU with a Master’s in Food Systems. She traveled with Think Coffee to Peru and Ethiopia to discover more about the people and places that create our coffee. Emily will soon begin her first year as a middle school teacher in Miami\, Florida\, where she will work to include food production and consumption in her science classes. \n \nAbout Think Coffee\nThink Coffee is a New York-based coffee company that has bought coffee from the Kellensoo region in the past. For the past several years\, Think Coffee has been an outstanding neighbor to CRS\, contributing to the cost of our renovation in 2010 and never failing to act in a thoughtful and neighborly fashion. We are delighted to have this opportunity to collaborate with them on a project dear to their hearts and ours.\nAbout Room to Read\nWe envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education\, reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world.\nTo achieve this goal\, we focus on two areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact: literacy and gender equality in education.  We work in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children\, and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.\nLearn moreArtist BlogArtist Web Site\nAugust 201336 – 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide (film screening) – 8/10
DESCRIPTION:Maro Chermayeff\, 2012\nUSA | 224′ (English)\nTake an unforgettable journey with six actress/advocates and New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof to meet some of the most courageous individuals of our time\, who are doing extraordinary work to empower women and girls everywhere. These are stories of heartbreaking challenge\, dramatic transformation and enduring hope. You will be shocked\, outraged\, brought to tears. Most important\, you will be inspired by the resilience of the human spirit and the capabilities of women and girls to realize their staggering potential.\nHALF THE SKY is a passionate call-to-arms\, urging us not only to bear witness to the plight of the world’s women\, but to help to transform their oppression into opportunity. Our future is in the hands of women\, everywhere.\nPresented by Think Act Change NYC and CRS\, this screening is FREE but seating is limited! As the film is nearly four hours long\, there will be an intermission with light refreshments\, and there will also be a guest speaker and Q&A following the screening.\nA suggested donation of $10 at the door will go towards the HALF THE SKY featured NGO’s to support their ongoing work for women across the world: \nGrameem Foundation \nSomaly Mam Foundation \nRoom to Read \nWe encourage everyone to bring a friend\, neighbor\, family member or co-worker along to this event. It is without doubt\, one of the most important documentary to watch in this century.\n  \n \nHALF THE SKY premiered as a four-hour television series for PBS and international broadcast\, shot in 10 countries: Cambodia\, Kenya\, India\, Sierra Leone\, Somaliland\, Vietnam\, Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Liberia and the U.S. Inspired by the book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn\, the documentary series introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable — and fighting bravely to change them. Traveling with intrepid reporter Nicholas Kristof and A-list celebrity advocates America Ferrera\, Diane Lane\, Eva Mendes\, Meg Ryan\, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde\, the film reflects viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offers an actionable blueprint for transformation. \nAcross the globe oppression is being confronted\, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care\, education\, and economic empowerment for women and girls. The linked problems of sex trafficking and forced prostitution\, gender-based violence\, and maternal mortality — which needlessly claim one woman every 90 seconds — present to us the single most vital opportunity of our time: the opportunity to make a change. All over the world women are seizing this opportunity.\nIn additional to the documentary\, this landmark transmedia project features\, a Facebook-hosted social action game\, mobile games\, two websites\, educational video modules with companion text\, a social media campaign supporting over 30 partner NGOs\, and an impact assessment plan all inspired by Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide\, the widely acclaimed book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.\nAbout the Film’s Six Segments\n1) Eva Mendes in Sierra Leone (Gender Based Violence): Mendes and Kristof report on a situation where most attacks against women go unreported. They meet up with a representative (Amie Kandeh) of the International Rescue Committee whose efforts to educate and protect women are tireless.\n2) Meg Ryan in Cambodia (Sex Trafficking): In this episode\, Ryan and Kristof meet a leader in the anti-trafficking struggle (Somaly Mam). In a country where about a third of the prostitutes are children\, Mam personalizes the story as she herself was sold into the sex trade as a child. Her efforts to rehabilitate brothel girls packs a strong emotional punch.\n3) Gabrielle Union in Vietnam (Education): Union and Kristof visit the country with John Wood. As a marketing executive with Microsoft\, Wood has introduced Room to Read which is an organization that promotes both literacy and equal opportunity education for girls within developing nations. As girls can be seen as second class citizens in places like Vietnam\, they sometimes are pulled from school and not given the same opportunities as boys.\n4) Diane Lane in Somaliland (Maternal Mortality): The unpleasant fact in Somaliland is that one in twelve women die in childbirth. A combination of poor nutrition\, female genital mutilation\, and general neglect have made the act of giving life an unprecedented danger. They meet Edna Adan who has started the country’s first maternal health facility.\n5) America Ferrera in India (Forced Prostitution): In India\, there are about 3 million prostitutes with 1.2 million of them being children. Girls often follow their mothers into the trade with no other outlet. Here we meet Urmi Basu who works in the infamous red light district to try to break down these patterns and conventions.\n6) Olivia Wilde in Kenya (Education): Wilde visits the Shining Hope for Communities organization and the Kibera School for Girls. Here we see a tuition free education established for promoting the advancement and opportunity of local girls who never had access to such things before.\n— summary provided by K. SUMMARY:Bag It (film screening) – 7/27
DESCRIPTION:Suzan Beraza\, Director\, 2010\nUSA | 78′ (English)\nOn Saturday\, July 27\, 2013 at 4 pm\, CRS & THINK ACT CHANGE invite you to screen and discuss BAG IT\, a documentary looking at all the plastic we use everyday and how it impacts the environment — in ways we didn’t realize. We will end with Q&A discussion on products / ways we can all individually reduce our plastic footprint to make the world a better place.\nThe screening is FREE but seating is limited. Registering online is recommended (but not required).\nAmericans use 60\,000 plastic bags every five minutes-single-use disposable bags that we mindlessly throw away. But where is “away?” Where do the bags and other plastics end up\, and at what cost to our environment\, marine life and human health? Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. Jeb is not a radical environmentalist\, but an average American who decides to take a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics. Jeb’s journey in this documentary film starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society-from baby bottles\, to sports equipment\, to dental sealants\, to personal care products-is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb’s journey takes a personal twist\, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now. \nFilming Locations: Bahamas\, England\, Germany\, Ireland\, Midway Atoll\, and the U.S. (California\, Colorado\, Hawaii\, Michigan\, New York\, Seattle\, Washington DC)\n  \nBag It Intro from Suzan Beraza on Vimeo. \n \nFilmmakers\nSuzan Beraza\, Director: Born in Jamaica and raised in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic\, Suzan Beraza’s thought-provoking films challenge viewers to examine their lives and consider the impact of their choices. Previous films include Life’s A Beach\, American Outrage\, Blue Planet Run\, Water\, A Clear Solution and Troubled Waters: The Dilemma of Dams.\nJeb Berrier\, Talent: Jeb Berrier is the host for a morning television show on Plum TV. Working for Plum\, Berrier won an Emmy® award for his coverage of the 2008 Democratic Convention. Berrier also works as an actor and director in theater\, film\, and television commercials and was a member of the National Shakespeare Company in New York City in the mid-1990s. He also produces the annual Telluride Comedy Festival.\nMichelle Hill\, Producer: Michelle has only recently discovered the art of film production. She is an artist\, small business owner and environmentalist. She believes that one of the most important things anyone can do to make the world a better place is to constantly gain new perspectives on life. Documentary film production has been a perfect way to integrate her many skills and talents. Bag It is her first film.\nJudith Kohin\, Executive Producer: Judith was the executive director of the Ah Haa School for the Arts-one of southwest Colorado’s most successful arts organizations-from 1991-2006. Photographs documenting some of the women depicted in the documentary HALF THE SKY are also included as well as photos of some of the girls who have received educational assistance from HALF THE SKY featured NGO Room to Read. The exhibition opened on August 3 and will close on August 29\, 2013. An Opening Reception with the photograpers and light refreshments was held on Saturday\, August 3\, 2013 from 6 – 7:30 pm. \nAny profits from the sale of the photographs will be donated to the Eleshu Kellensoo Mokonissa Primary School Library in Kellensoo\, Ethiopia\, which has been funded by Think Coffee and its partners Nardos Exports & The Bushwick Seed Company. In conjunction with the exhibition HALF THE SKY will be screened at CRS on August 10 from 2:30 – 7 pm.\nAbout Photographer Misako Ono\nMisako’s interest in photography began in her freshmen year of high school when she took a digital photography class. We work in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children\, and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.\nLearn moreArtist BlogArtist Web Site\nAugust 20133 – 29Daily

SUMMARY:The Sacred Feminine in Gnosticism — 8/18
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, August 18\, 2013 from 2 – 4 pm\, GnosticNYC invites you to a discussion of the Sacred Feminine in Gnosticism. We will discuss the role of women and the female Aeons in Gnostic scriptures. Gnosticism is sometimes called the first feminist religion. This may be an exaggeration\, but they certainly had some interesting ideas about the role of gender in spirituality.\nTo register:\nhttp://www.meetup.com/GnosticNYC/events/128868612/?a=me1_grp&rv=me1\nPriest of the Johannite Church\, experienced nonprofit administrator\, author\, and lover of the esoteric and the arcane. Father Silvia endeavors to provide spiritual practices to people who are new to Gnosticism. His book puts several of these practices in the context of the Johannite Gnostic tradition.

SUMMARY:Help CRS Plan Future Community Events— 9/29
DESCRIPTION:Help us to plan and produce future events & actions! With more help\, we can achieve more. Who wants to get involved?!\nWe will hold an introductory organizational meeting on Sunday\, Sept 29 from 1 – 2:30 pm\, where you can bring in your ideas and we can start to create a road-map for Think Act Change NYC. How can those of us who are here participating now best work TOGETHER? What is the best use of our time\, talents and passion? We can have these meetings periodically as more people join (or get busy and step away) and try to develop these projects organically.\nIf you would like to get involved but can’t attend this time\, let us know. There will be other chances!\nAn agenda for this initial planning meeting might go something like this (but feel free to make suggestions by leaving comments or emailing one of us!):\n1) Introductions — introduce yourself\, your background\, interests\, and talents\n2) Discuss help needed to make projects more impactful and who would like to do what. A lot goes into planning effective events\, from choosing projects\, recruiting guest speakers\, publicizing events\, reaching out to sympathetic groups\, identifying actions that can be taken\, organizing the actions\, preparing written materials (or distribute online only?) and evaluating outcomes.\n3) Should we try to fill roles on an ongoing basis or per project? Should we try to recruit additional people with specific abilities/connections to fill some of these roles?\n4) Suggest & discuss ideas for future events & actions.\n5) Suggest & discuss ideas for fundraising to pay for the programming. \nAbout CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) and Social Activism\nAs you may know\, CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) is a center for the teaching and practice of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). Many people see the Course as being solely about changing the mind rather than behavior\, about finding peace in one’s own mind by accepting external circumstances (as being unimportant\, indeed unreal) rather than trying to change them. However\, the Course also says (in an earlier edition) that once your mind returns to love\, \nYou now share my inability to tolerate the lack of love in yourself and in everyone else\, and must join the Great Crusade to correct it. The slogan for this Crusade is ‘Listen\, Learn\, and Do.’ This means Listen to My Voice\, Learn to undo the error\, and do something to correct it. The first two are not enough. The real members of my party are active workers. — A Course in Miracles Urtext (T-1.26).\nTherefore\, we at CRS actively support all forms of social action that are motivated by love and the goal of undoing the obstacles to love in the world. That starts with changing our own minds by returning our own thoughts to love and then spreads when we help others to do the same. \nLearn moreThink Act Change Web Site\nSeptember 2013291 – 2:30 pm
