DESCRIPTION:After nearly 2 decades of movement and anatomy studies I have decided to begin offering a regular practice for folks to discover their body through the lens of fascia. \nClasses will consist of a short lecture/dharma of the days topic\, movement to promote embodiment\, guided meditation to awaken our understanding of the body\, partner work to put the experience into practice\, and chanting to explore the vibration fields on a cellular and fluid level. \nThe class will run like a workshop\, taking a deep dive into understanding and feeling the body and its depths. Limb by limb\, you can expect to redefine your understanding and the feeling of what it means to dwell in a body. \nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Mapping the Body:  Recognizing Successes & Principles in the Application of Fascial Movement
DESCRIPTION:A 4 day workshop for yoga\, pilates\, and movement teachers. \nWhen we approach a yoga class\, we bring our bodies and the stories we have accumulated during this life. We carry injuries\, both physical and emotional. They have changed the postural and structural alignments that exist between the bones\, muscles\, fascia\, nerves and organs. \nIn class we ask students to move their body according to predetermined sequences and adhere to shapes according to poses. How do the patterns that live in a particular body fit into shapes of those poses? How does an individuals particular somatic history fit a predetermined design? Are our students particular needs getting addressed as we guide them through these movements and poses? Do their personal histories prevent them from accessing our offering? \nHow can we guide students to recognize\, feel and change their specific relationships? Can we develop a language and understanding around what they bring and what they need? Are we interested in fixing what is wrong with them? Or are we interested in recognizing what is already successful in a persons structure and build upon that which is already understood. These are a few of the difficult questions that we will explore in this training. \nIn this 4 day course teachers will come away with the following tools: \n\nSeeing successes in their students bodies\nRecognizing structural patterns that are not serving your students\nTranslating bone alignment to soft tissue needs\nLanguage and techniques to make change to soft tissues\nStrategies and techniques for growing internal awareness\nPractical application of fascial movement in classroom setting\n\nCost: $595 before May 16th / $750 thereafter \nPlease note\, attendance will be by application only as space is limited in order to preserve the intentionally intimate nature of this training.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Summer Solstice Healing Circle led by Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko and CRS co-founders Yasuko Kasaki & Christopher Pelham with crystal singing bowl meditation by Miyoko Satoh. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. Through meditation\, prayer\, drumming\, singing\, and the whirling dance of the sufis\, we join together in unity and experience our limitlessness. Our circles are held on the third Thursday of the month at CRS. \nWe also support the family of Sayoko’s five-year-old daughter\, Amara\, who is growing up with a brain tumor and all the challenges that presents. Each Thursday 9pm we join minds with Amara’s prayer circle of hundreds of people around the world. \nPlease feel free to bring your frame drum\, rattle\, flute\, whistle\, chimes\, singing bowl\, or other instrument. You don’t need to be experienced. Together\, we will learn to listen to one another\, play together\, and express ourselves and find Oneness of intention. \nThe participation fee is $20 with advanced registration and $25 on the day of the class. \nThrough whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn\, that we may share our divine strength and bear witness to the divinity in others. \nIf you are quiet and in a state of prayer when you Turn\, offering everything of yourself to God\, then when your body is spinning\, there is a completely still point in the center… The heavens respond; and all the invisible kingdoms join in the dance. Appearing in Japanese and American magazines and newspapers\, Lale aspires for dance to be a powerful communicator though traditional technique and spiritual embodiment. Through self-directed massage work we will move through techniques that: release tension that is stored in our bodies and tissues due to daily and chronic stressors; increase body awareness and specifically drive our consciousness to parts of the body that are often over utilized\, overlooked\, and hard to access; improve mobility so that we can move through our days with greater ease; tap into the agency of the self and our innate ability to heal and care for ourselves. Stimulating pressure receptors in the muscle tissue\, which can be done through self massage work\, increases vagal activity in the brain which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system\, our rest and digest nervous system\, the side of our nervous system that is linked to the relaxation response and promotes our bodies’ natural ability to restore\, heal\, and thrive. \nCome dressed to move and bring a journal. \nThis workshop is for the woman who refuses to brave these socially\, racially\, politically\, and economically trying times alone. It is for the woman who desires an overhaul and transformation of her relationship to wellbeing\, as it relates to the myriad of stressors that overcome us\, as both individuals and within the context of being in community. These workshops will explore a definition of self-care that does not require putting off your wellbeing until a holiday break\, nor does it require a membership at an expensive yoga studio. Together we will begin an inquiry into perceiving ourselves and our communities as resources to tap for resilience and wellbeing moment by moment and day by day. You will gain lasting practical tools to make self-care an integrated and powerful support for your life. The exhibition will open Saturday\, July 7\, 2018 and will remain on view through August 30\, 2018. \nExhibition Concept \n‘Love Planet Project’ was created by photographer yukko＊ to share love of plants all over the world through photography. \nThe aim of this project is for the plants in yukko＊’s photo postcards to be delivered all over the world by those who join this project by ‘pay-it-forwarding’. \nIn this show the original prints of the postcards and posters of the 16 selected photos used for the project postcards as well as the actual postcards themselves will be displayed. \n All her photos were taken with a film camera\, and none of them have been re-touched by the computer. \nArtist Statement \nPlants have always seemed to be very close to me since I was a child.  Without recognizing it\, I started taking photos and naturally I became a photographer specializing in pictures of plants. Gradually I noticed that I always felt the affection and graciousness of the plants while taking photos\, and started to want to try to transform the plants’ energy of love into light through photography. At the same time I started to talk to the plants when taking photos saying\, “Please let me deliver your love to those who need it.” \nHaving seen visitors to my photo exhibition shed tears while looking at my photos\, it became certain to me that the wave of love of plants can be passed on to us human beings\, and I decided to deliver the love of plants all over the world through photography.  As a start\, I have launched this ‘Love Planet Project’ in New York through this photo exhibition at CRS. \nBio \nyukko＊ was born and raised in Sapporo\, Japan. She became interested in different cultures when she saw a lot of foreign guests at the winter Olympic games in her hometown when she was a child. She kept this interest in the world and became an English translator at the local government after she studied at Kings College\, London. During her career as a translator she came to understand the cultural diversity as well as re-recognizing the spiritual nature of Japanese people. \nBeing transferred to the suburb to work as a staff in charge of tourism she started to take photographs as a part of her work. It did not take long for her to be absorbed in photography and she came to recognize that photos reflect what the photographer sees and feels. \nShe experienced depression during her next career in the government and decided to quit\, and started her new career as a photographer in Osaka. \nNow she holds photo exhibitions in various places in Japan as well as photo classes and portrait shooting.  She also works as a personal fashion-consultant and also as a singer.  She is an integrated artist supporting people to live honest to their nature. \n

DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Azalea\, an intimate evening of music composed by Ki Young Kim and performed by Quiet Revolution (musicians Ki Young Kim and gamin of Korea) in the award-winning White Room at CRS on Friday\, July 27\, 2018 at 8 pm. Azalea is the inaugural program of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series curated by Gamin. \nKi Young (claves and voice) and Gamin (saenghwang and piri) are renowned for carrying Korean traditional music into the present\, inciting an irresistible dialog between classic and contemporary. “Gamin is…a true pioneer and innovator\, leading these instruments in exciting new directions” — Ralph Samuelson (senior advisor\, Asian Cultural Council). \nTickets are $20 in advance\, $25 on the day of the concert\, and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Tickets for students and seniors (65+) with valid ID are available at the door for $15. Seating is limited. \nThe Program \nAll works are composed or transcribed by Ki Young Kim. \nAzaleas (saenghwang\, poetry)\nAzaleas by poets Sowol Kim and Dong Yeop Shin. This poetry symbolizes Korean sorrow\, regret and despair. Submissiveness becomes strength\, surrender becomes hope. Through meditative musical phrases\, transcendance grows. \nThe Mountain’s Angry Cry (piri solo)\nBased on a traditional folk song. One sings standing on the mountain and competes with the spirit of the mountain. Today the song becomes a weeping lament because the mountain has become bare and dry. \nSpeed and Silence (saenghwang\, claves\, voice)\nThis composition is inspired by the picture of a city\, quiet and peaceful\, prior to gentrification. \nCROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA will provide musicians from Korea with space to experiment with the new\, to collaborate across genres\, cultures and disciplines\, and to explore new ways of using creative communication to facilitate a shared practice of presence. The goal will be to dissolve boundaries between performers and audiences\, the traditional and contemporary\, classical and experimental\, Korea and the world. Participants in the series are encouraged to incorporate meditation\, improvisation\, and collaborations with visual and movement-based artists as well as musical artists from different traditions. Performances will take place in the award-winning White Room (named by Homes to Love as one of nine yoga studios around the world “that achieve design nirvana”) at CRS designed in 2015 by Clouds AO. \nCROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA will be curated by gamin  (piri\, taepyeonso\, saenghwang). Two future programs of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series are currently scheduled: \nFriday\, September 14\, 2018 at 8 pm\nYut Nori:  Contemporary conceptual art and music\ncomposed by Hyojee Kang \nFriday\, November 9\, 2018 at 8 pm\n7 words chanting_Yeongsanheosang:  Korean traditional music concert\npiri\, saenghwang by gamin\nhaegeum by Minkyung Park \nAbout the Artists \ngamin \ngamin is a yisuja of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 46 for piri and daechita. gamin is one of the most celebrated piri\, taepyeongso (Korean traditional oboe family) and saengwhang (ancient wind-blow instrument) performers in Korea today. From 2000 to 2010\, she was a member and assistant principal player of the Contemporary Gukak Orchestra at the National Gukak Center\, the hub for training and preserving Korean traditional music. SUMMARY:Intro to Sufi Dance Class with Lâle Sayoko
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient practice of meditative whirling known as Sufi dance or Sema (Sama in Iranian). You will learn the techniques of whirling\, but Sema is not about reproducing a certain form or aesthetic. Rather\, the technique serves as a vehicle for inner journeying. Sema means spiritual listening. Together we’ll create a sacred space in which we can safely listen to and share our true selves and experience oneness with the Divine. \nEach class consists of some explanation of the theory and technique\, exercises\, practice whirling\, and sharing and discussion of what you experienced and felt. \nWhirling commonly induces dizziness or nausea. Over time\, through whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control. We empty our minds of all thoughts of the individual self as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn. Into this emptiness floods a divine fullness\, which sometimes gives rise to a state known as “mystical intoxication\,” a reflection of knowing and experiencing that you and I and the Divine are One. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing (white\, gray or black color is preferable\, avoiding prints and shiny material which might distract the eye while whirling) and wear socks or soft soled shoes. Lale aspires for dance to be a powerful communicator though traditional technique and spiritual embodiment. She has lately been studying Sufi dance with Rana Gorgani\, and in April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi dance training. DESCRIPTION:CRS welcomes you to the fourth exhibition of USAATO clothing at CRS on August 4\, 2018! Designer Mr. Usaburo’s staff will personally help to select and coordinate the garments that would suit you best. \nAugust 4 from 11 am – 5 pm in the award-winning White Room \nUSAATO shares beautiful traditional clothes made in Chiang Mai\, Thailand. The clothing is designed by Japanese haute couture designer Usaburo Sato with fabrics made by the caring hands of the Thai people. The fabrics are mostly made of hand-spun cotton\, silk and hemp\, picked in mountains and villages\, naturally dyed from plants and fruits\, then made into clothes with traditional weaving machines by women in local villages of north and northeast Thailand and Laos. The attention\, time and passion put into the creation of these clothes give it a sense of energy that can be felt on your body and in your soul. Soft and warm\, relaxing wears suitable for both outside and home. \nAll fabrics are once gathered at “USAATO SIAM” in Chiang Mai and then delivered for the sewing process. USAATO clothes are sewn by individuals and groups outbound Chiang Mai\, not by the company’s factory. (One part of our products is from machine-weaving.) \nThe products are mostly women’s clothes but men’s clothes\, children’s clothes\, samue (monk’s working clothes)\, and rakui (pajamas) are also available. Approximate prices for tops are from $70 to $180 while bottoms are from $90 to $180. \nUSAATO clothes are selling all over the world at pop-up exhibitions organized by USAATO partners called coordinators. USSATO NEW YORK will hold exhibitions every few months at CRS. \nWearing hemp clothing promotes personal health in a variety of ways. Hemp/ cotton blends are both more absorbent humid and more mildew resistant than 100% cotton. Fabric made using 50% or higher of hemp will block more UV rays than non-hemp fabrics. And have you ever noticed that hemp-made garments don’t create static? That is because hemp has the same net static charge as human skin\, resonating perfectly with our electromagnetic fields. \nFollowing the exhibition there will be a concert by world musician Chakkiri at 7 pm. SUMMARY:CRS Healing Circle:  Prayer\, Sound Meditation + Whirling
DESCRIPTION:CRS invites you to join us for our monthly healing circle led by Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko and CRS co-founders Yasuko Kasaki & Christopher Pelham with crystal singing bowl meditation by Miyoko Satoh. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. Through meditation\, prayer\, partnering work\, drumming\, singing\, and the whirling dance of the sufis\, we join together in unity and experience our limitlessness. NOTE:  This month Lale Sayoko will be away. She will return in Sept. \nOur circles are held on the third Thursday of the month at CRS. Introductory drop-in classes in the technique and theory of Sufi Dance (whirling) are taught by Lale  Sayoko on the first Thursday of each month at CRS from 7:30 – 9 pm. \nWe also support the family of Sayoko’s five-year-old daughter\, Amara\, who is growing up with a brain tumor and all the challenges that presents. Each Thursday 9pm we join minds with Amara’s prayer circle of hundreds of people around the world. \nPlease feel free to bring your frame drum\, rattle\, flute\, whistle\, chimes\, singing bowl\, or other instrument. You don’t need to be experienced. DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Small Voyage\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Ayane Kurai. The exhibition will open Thursday\, September 6\, 2018 and will remain on view through October 20\, 2018. An Opening Reception with the artist will be held on Thursday\, September 13\, 2018 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Pictured above:  Women March 2018 copyright © 2018 by Ayane Kurai. \nThough the works in this exhibition are large for CRS\, they are nevertheless among the smallest works created by Kurai. Thickly layered and heavily textured\, these expressionistic oil paintings vary in subject matter and degree of abstraction. What holds constant and what distinguishes Kurai’s works is their intensity of color and texture and the immediacy of their evocation of the colors and textures of a life fully experienced. \nThis is the second solo show by Kurai at CRS. The first\, “Yuko’s Spring Has Come” in 2010\, mostly featured works created around the time of the birth and early childhood of her two children\, and celebrated the life of her friend the artist Yuko Sueta\, who had recently passed away. As Kurai’s children have gotten older\, she has become increasingly active again and has been steadily exhibiting new works in many shows. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAyane Kurai was born in 1969 in Hyogo\, Japan. In 1988 she entered the department of paintings\, College of Art and Design\, Musashino Art University in Tokyo. She has been living and working in New York City since 1990.
