SUMMARY:Four Seasons in NY: Gems of Japanese Music Vol. 12
DESCRIPTION:CRS & Mar Creation\, Inc. invite you to discover traditional Japanese music by the acclaimed koto and shamisen player and vocalist Yoko Reikano Kimura\, offered together with an exclusive taste of beautiful Japanese seasonal sweets prepared by Mochi Rin. The next concert will take place in the award-winning White Room at CRS on Sunday\, August 12\, 2018 at 4 pm. Tickets are $25 and include delicious wagashi (sweets). Seating is limited and advanced purchased (online\, by phone 212-677-8621\, or in person at CRS) is encouraged. \nProgram;\nChidori no Kyoku – Songs of Plover – (Yoshizawa kengyo)\nShin Sarashi (Fukakusa kengyo/arranged by Kin’ichi Nakanoshima)\nMittsu no Dansho – Three Fragments – (Kin’ichi Nakanoshima) \n“…Yoko Reikano Kimura\, playing the shamisen and singing\, is superb….” — New York Times \n“…Kimura’s performance on the solo shamisen was quite stunning. An elegant refined presence perfectly poised\, she played with precision\, beauty and the utmost confidence….” — San Francisco Examiner \nAfter many centuries\, the brilliance of traditional Japanese music is still being passed on to the present day. Come and experience the sounds of koto and shamisen and enjoy the taste of the four seasons here in New York. This concert series features each season’s representative traditional works along with the colorful and delicate Japanese style confectionaries. \nThis will be the fourth and final concert of Volume 3 of this seasonal series of music concerts called Four Seasons in New York — Gems of Japanese Music. \n\nEach season is expressed through ingredients. Spring traditionally begins with sakura (cherry blossoms)\, broccoli rabe\, strawberries and raspberries\, followed by elderflower\, rose\, edamame and sansho (Japanese pepper) in summer. As autumn approaches we’ll pick chrysanthemum\, apples\, grapes\, chestnuts and hazelnuts; and yuzu and kumquats in winter…. Even within one season\, the taste and the form change gradually from hashiri through nagori. \nMochi Rin / Bite-sized mochi dessert made with organic bean paste\, seasonally fruits and flowers in NY. \nWe present a new type of mochi that doesn’t quite exist in Japan\, by infusing New York’s locally-sourced ingredients into Japan’s popular traditional dessert —the stuffed mochi rounds\, such as daifuku and sakura-mochi — and mixing in rin\, the element of restrained grace.  http://www.rin-nyc.com \n  \n  \nMore about Yoko Reikano Kimura \nAs a frequent soloist and collaborator\, Japanese born Koto/Shamisen performer and singer Yoko Reikano Kimura has performed in NYC\, Chicago\, Tokyo\, Kyoto and many other cities\, featuring a wide-ranging repertoire from classical Japanese music to improvisational pieces. Yoko has won numerous awards including the First Prize at the prestigious 10th Kenjun Memorial National Koto Competition as the first Yamada style koto performer. She received the First Prize at the 4th Great Wall International Music Competition and the Osaka Chinese Counsel Award and won the Japanese music audition for NHK-FM radio and her solo shamisen performance was broadcasted nationally. Since then she has performed numerous koto and shamisen pieces for the radio and regularly toured internationally. \nSince Yoko moved to the US in 2010\, her mission has been to promote Japanese music to American audiences. As part of this mission she is performing and giving workshops at various venues\, such as the UN\, Merkin\, Bargemusic\, Roulette\, Princeton University\, Japan Society\, Harvard University\, Princeton University\, the New England Conservatory\, the University of Chicago\, Duke University and many others. http://www.yamadaryu.com/reikano/ \nAs part of the award-winning Duo Yumeno\, she has  released the album Flowers\, Birds\, Wind\, Moon:  The Music of Marty Regan. Listen and purchase here. \n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:CRS Healing Circle: Prayer\, Sound Meditation + Whirling
DESCRIPTION:CRS invites you to join us for our monthly healing circle led by Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko and CRS co-founders Yasuko Kasaki & Christopher Pelham with crystal singing bowl meditation by Miyoko Satoh. We gather to let go of our small selves and remember our divinity within. Through meditation\, prayer\, partnering work\, drumming\, singing\, and the whirling dance of the sufis\, we join together in unity and experience our limitlessness. NOTE:  This month Lale Sayoko will be away. She will return in Sept. \nOur circles are held on the third Thursday of the month at CRS. Introductory drop-in classes in the technique and theory of Sufi Dance (whirling) are taught by Lale  Sayoko on the first Thursday of each month at CRS from 7:30 – 9 pm. \nWe also support the family of Sayoko’s five-year-old daughter\, Amara\, who is growing up with a brain tumor and all the challenges that presents. Each Thursday 9pm we join minds with Amara’s prayer circle of hundreds of people around the world. \nPlease feel free to bring your frame drum\, rattle\, flute\, whistle\, chimes\, singing bowl\, or other instrument. You don’t need to be experienced. Together\, we will learn to listen to one another\, play together\, and express ourselves and find Oneness of intention. \nThe participation fee is $20 with advanced registration and $25 on the day of the class. \nThrough whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn\, that we may share our divine strength and bear witness to the divinity in others. \nIf you are quiet and in a state of prayer when you Turn\, offering everything of yourself to God\, then when your body is spinning\, there is a completely still point in the center… The heavens respond; and all the invisible kingdoms join in the dance. But the world does not understand. They think we Turn in order to go into some sort of trance. It is true that sometimes we do go into that state you call ecstasy\, but that is only when we know and experience at the same time. We do not Turn for ourselves. We turn around in the way we do so that the Light of God may descend upon the earth. As you act as a conduit in the Turn\, the light comes through the right hand\, and the left hand brings it into this world… We turn for God and for the world\, and it is the most beautiful thing you can imagine. — Mevlevi Shaikh Suleyman Hyatt Dede \nAbout Sufi Dance Instructor Lale Sayoko \nLale was one of the founding members of Japan’s famous Samanyolu professional bellydance group\, and has since developed her own solo career touring with UK’s Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on a 44 city tour of the UK\, to Turkey’s Baba Zula\, to New York’s Bella Gaia multimedia Earth from Space journey show. Appearing in Japanese and American magazines and newspapers\, Lale aspires for dance to be a powerful communicator though traditional technique and spiritual embodiment. She has lately been studying Sufi dance with Rana Gorgani and in April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi dance training.\nhttp://www.lalesayoko.com

SUMMARY:Music Concert: Rio x Rio Special Live in NY
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Rio x Rio Special Live in NY\, a showcase of dazzling rock-style sanshin playing by Rio Inyaku (kankara-sanshin and vocal) and melodic ballads by Rio’ (piano and vocals)\, two exceptional young musicians from Japan\, on August 23\, 2018 at 8 pm. The teen phenoms will each play a solo set and also perform together. After the concert we invite you to stay and enjoy refreshments with Rio x Rio. \nThere is a suggested donation of $20 cash. Please RSVP here. Families and kids are welcome! \n7:40 pm Doors open\n8:00 pm Concert begins\n9:30 – 10 pm Reception *ready to serve food and drink donations are also welcome! \nAbout the Performers \nRio Inyaku is a 16-year-old can-based sanshin (kankara-sanshin) player. He plays kankara-sanshin extremely fast and also behind his neck just like Jimi Hendrix. He uses effects pedals and a loop station connector with kankara-sanshin\, which makes his music unique. He has performed live in many cities\, including on big stages such as “World Eisa Contest 2017” held at the National Theater Okinawa\, and “Sanshin-day\,” one of the biggest folk song festivals in Japan. \nRio’s set of Okinawan folk songs\, fusion of Okinawan and American pop\, and remix of Ryukyo classical and folk music and his amazing performance with two sanshins will surely bring you the joy of living from the South Island! \nhttp://riomusic.rederio.jp\nhttps://www.facebook.com/OkinawaRio\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EV5c198GqU \nThe Kankara-sanshin I play with is originally a handmade can-based music instrument that comforted Okinawan people in the aftermath of the 2nd World War. Okinawa\, which is located in southern-most Japan\, consists of many beautiful islands with rich culture and friendly people. In 1945 the battle of Okinawa was fierce and many people died\, but the survivors never lost their love of life\, nor their love of music\, and they restored the community. My dream is to create new Okinawan songs and sing with friends all over the world to make the Earth a happier place to live. Let’s enjoy music and celebrate the joy of living altogether!  — Rio Inyaku \nRio’ is a14-year-old singer-songwriter and pianist. She has been learning the basics of music and piano since she was three years old\, and since she was six years old also music theory and composition. She has won a series of authoritative piano performance competitions and composition competitions every year\, and her outstanding career has attracted many music stake holders. She started writing songs with lyrics and playing the guitar in 2017 and her YouTube channel “Ririon” already developed a good reputation. In December 2017\, she recorded her original song “Daijoubu” (which means “You are OK” in English) with a band arrangement. It was distributed worldwide by iTunes\, Amazon Music etc. in February 2018. Drumming\, recording\, mixing and mastering are by Masatatsu Tsubuki\, a renowned recording engineer in Japan. She makes her inspiration from heaven into her lyrics and sings for the world with love and warmth. \nHer original music is distributed at https://www.tunecore.co.jp/artist/Rio_ririon\nFacebook https://www.facebook.com/Rio.ririon7/\nDigest videos https://youtu.be/LVZY-sYoTAY\nYouTube “Ririon” https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuapS8rqLY4p8AtE52sI_fg \nI have composed many piano songs since I was little. One day when I was 13 years old\, I suddenly had an inspiration of lyrics and melodies; they naturally became a song. Since then\, when I am relaxed\, lyrics and melodies come to me at the same time\, which makes me feel like they are coming down from heaven. In April I stayed at the home of an American family in the Los Angeles suburbs\, and I realized we can communicate by music without words. I would like to make many people happy and cheerful with my music. At this concert I will sing my original songs and play my original piano instrumental composition. I am looking forward to seeing you all!      — Rio’ \n  \n

SUMMARY:Intro to Ortho-Bionomy®
DESCRIPTION:“An Ortho-Bionomist In Every Single Family” \nO-B Introduction\, Demonstration and feeling a Release\nBy Teruko Tooley \nInvitation to everyone who is interested in easing body functions and movements \n\n\n\n\nHi\, everybody. \nI am Teruko. I am an Associate Instructor and Advanced practitioner of Ortho-Bionomy®. I have been witnessing magical transformations of the human body with this bodywork. \nOrtho-Bionomy® is a gentle approach to our bodies. It helps to Release tensions and pain. It also helps the re-education of proper posture\, and it improves the balance between stability and mobility in our bodies. There are many O-B self care exercises which helps to process and restore better alignment of the body after a session. \nWhether unconscious or conscious\, postural imbalance may possibly cause some irritations\, pain and discomforts. Actually\, our bodies tend to hold the postural patterns within the nervous system. If a body has experience of continuous repetitive movements and/or positions with relationship to work\, an activity\, injuries or any impacts to a body\, like accidents or emotional incidents in our lives. Eventually\, the postural patterns will start normalizing\, and they will become and stay normal in the systems of the body. So sometimes people can not find any reasons why they are feeling discomfort or pain in the body after a while.\nOrtho-Bionomy approach will give some opportunities to heal and ease our body withRecognitions and Reeducation. In process and changing the structural and postural alignments\, the body will unite some other aspects within the body\, like emotions and more. \nI would like to offer some experience to everyone including receiving and giving some techniques to find what you feel. Because\, the founder of Ortho-Bionomy®\, Arthur Lincoln Pauls\, simplified this work for everyone to take care of ourselves. His dream was “An Ortho-Bionomist in every single family.” \nLet’s see what arises during this workshop. If you are interested in this workshop\, please contact me as soon as you can. Seats in the class are limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo Register or Any Questions: Please contact to Teruko Tooley Phone: (646) 460-0688 or terukont@hotmail.co.jp \nPlease feel free to contact me via text or Phone call. Please leave a voice mail if I can not take your phone call.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Small Voyage by Ayane Kurai
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Small Voyage\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Ayane Kurai. The exhibition will open Thursday\, September 6\, 2018 and will remain on view through October 20\, 2018. An Opening Reception with the artist will be held on Thursday\, September 13\, 2018 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Pictured above:  Women March 2018 copyright © 2018 by Ayane Kurai. \nThough the works in this exhibition are large for CRS\, they are nevertheless among the smallest works created by Kurai. Thickly layered and heavily textured\, these expressionistic oil paintings vary in subject matter and degree of abstraction. What holds constant and what distinguishes Kurai’s works is their intensity of color and texture and the immediacy of their evocation of the colors and textures of a life fully experienced. \nThis is the second solo show by Kurai at CRS. The first\, “Yuko’s Spring Has Come” in 2010\, mostly featured works created around the time of the birth and early childhood of her two children\, and celebrated the life of her friend the artist Yuko Sueta\, who had recently passed away. SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Concert Series: Yut Nori /  나비 Butterfly II Conceptual Transformation Improvisation (2018.9.14)
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents Yut Nori /  나비 Butterfly II Conceptual Transformation Improvisation (2018.9.14)\, an intimate evening of music intimately intertwined with conceptual visual art created by composer/pianist Hyo Jee Kang\, musician gamin\, and dance artists binbinFactory (Satoshi Haga & Rie Fukuzawa). The performance will take place at CRS on Friday\, September 14\, 2018 at 8 pm. This program is Vol. 2 of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series curated by gamin. \nTickets are $20 in advance\, $25 on the day of the performance\, and $15 at the door for students and seniors with ID. Kids accompanied by an adult are FREE at the door! Tickets are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621) and at CRS. \nThe first work on the program\, Yut Nori\, is an experiment to create a music and dance performance by playing with the traditional Korean board game Yut Nori (윷놀이). The Yut game board depicts icons representing four gods\, 36 constellations and five animals encircling a star that represents the eternal. The audience will play the game\, and their movement around the board will bring us into contact with the choices\, chance encounters\, friendships and challenges we meet throughout life — which the performers will then translates into music and dance! \nComposition by Hyo Jee Kang\nCo-work and movement by binbinFactory\nOriginal composition by Hyo jee Kang and So-Ui Lee\nThe painting inspired by the Yut Nori game board\, printed on canvas\, is by Hyojee Kang and Wha Lee\nMusic by Hyo Jee Kang and gamin \n \nThe second work on the program\, 나비 Butterfly II Conceptual Transformation Improvisation (2018.9.14)\, is about the soul of being hurt and lost. The image of the butterfly connects the poem “Mirror” by the avant-garde Korean poet Yi Sang (September 14\, 1910 – April 17\, 1937) with one of the victims who drowned in the sinking of the South Korean vessel Sewol that took the lives of more than 200 high school students on April 16\, 2014. The work also “mirrors” and reflects the history of Jeju Island and the artist’s personal memories. This is the fifth such transformation of this poem into music by Hyo Jee Kang and is part of her conceptual transformation series\, in which she explores transformations from and to texts\, notes\, scores\, images\, paintings\, feelings\, stage arts\, lights and voices. \nCROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA\, curated by gamin (piri\, taepyeonso\, saenghwang)\, provides musicians from Korea with space to experiment with the new\, to collaborate across genres\, cultures and disciplines\, and to explore new ways of using creative communication to facilitate a shared practice of presence. The goal is to dissolve boundaries between performers and audiences\, the traditional and contemporary\, classical and experimental\, Korea and the world. Participants in the series are encouraged to incorporate meditation\, improvisation\, and collaborations with visual and movement-based artists as well as musical artists from different traditions. \nVol. 3 of the CROSSING BOUNDARIES — ECHOES OF KOREA series will be: \nFriday\, November 9\, 2018 at 8 pm\n7 words chanting_Yeongsanheosang:  Korean traditional music concert\npiri\, saenghwang by gamin\nhaegeum by Minkyung Park \nAbout the Artists \nHyo Jee Kang has been focusing on transformation between media and objects to create a new art form. SUMMARY:You Are Already That Which You Seek - a talk by ACIM Lecturer Paul Hedderman
DESCRIPTION:In lieu of our usual ACIM/ACOL class this Wednesday\, 9/19\, CRS invites you to a talk by ACIM teacher and AA guru Paul Hedderman. Paul has been involved with the recovery community since 1988 and has been leading workshops and holding talks for 18 years. He is the author of The Escape To Everywhere. A Zen slap to your mind\, Paul’s unique language and solid presence bespeak the depth of his understanding of the human condition—in which the original addiction is the mind’s addiction to being a self. His message\, that inspires many\, is simple and clear: \nYOU ARE ALREADY THAT WHICH YOU SEEK. \nYou are wholeness itself. The ‘self’ is a ‘parasite’ that claims to be you and once the ‘foreign installment’ is believed\, comes the seeking to get rid of it. \nhttp://www.zenbitchslap.com \nsuggested donation $20 cash at the door (no one turned away)..

SUMMARY:Concert: ATOWA + Amir Bey’s “Comets & Magic Mirrors”
DESCRIPTION:CRS Presents an evening of improvisational music and visual art by the multi-instrumentalist duo ATOWA and visual artist Amir Bey. ATOWA combines the celestial sounds of pianist/vocalist/crystal-singing bowl player Naoe Moriya with the earthy instincts of singer-songwriter/pianist/percussionist Saco Yasuma. With Amir Bey’s “Comets and Magic Mirrors” mobiles twisting in the air above them\, the duo evokes a marriage of earth and sky. \nThe performance will take place on Saturday\, September 22\, 2018 at 7 pm. Tickets are $35 at the door and $30 in advance and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Direct ticket link:  https://bit.ly/2vO7I6Z \nThe piano duo ATOWA was formed in May 2016 in NYC. This is the second collaboration with Amir Bey’s “Comets and Magic Mirrors“ installation and poetry\, following their performance in Kyoto\, Japan on July 1 of this year. This will be their first attempt using two keyboards. Playfully playing off one another\, Moriya and Yasuma offer their ever changing vibrations to the Universe. \nAmir Bey’s “Comets and Magic Mirrors” \nThis installation is Amir’s unique conceptual world that is a metaphor for the encounters with other people and things in our daily lives. “Comets” represent enormous impactful energy that crash into “Magic Mirrors.” The copper and amalgamated metal mobiles organically flow with air currents\, creating correspondences between people and music. The installation takes you to a magical and joyful world. \nARTIST PROFILES \nAmir Bey is a New York City-based artist whose work spans many disciplines. A mixed-media sculptor who works in a variety of media\, from carvings\, installations\, metal work including bronze and copper\, silkscreen on fabric for costumes and set designs\, as well as mask-making for performance. His original tarot “The Equinox Celebration Tarot” was published in 1993\, and republished in 2016. http://equinoxcelebration.com \nNaoe Moriya was accredited as a certified International Dalcroze Eurhythmics Teacher by the Juilliard School in New York\, after graduating from the Kunitachi College of Music in Japan. She is an artist of many talents and plays the piano\, sings\, composes\, improvises and teaches music. She has been teaching piano and Dalcroze Eurhythmics for about 30 years. She is also a crystal singing bowl player. The crystal singing bowl is an instrument made of crystal and is often used in healing sessions. Using her experience as a musician\, Naoe established her own performance style as she now plays the crystal singing bowl and the piano at the same time. She has performed all throughout her home country of Japan and numerous times in New York\, Hawaii\, San Francisco\, Shasta and Sedona. https://crystal-nao.com/ \nSaco Yasuma has performed as a keyboard player and saxophonist in rock\, Reggae\, Funk\, Salsa and jazz bands in Tokyo and in New York. SUMMARY:Rose Healing Ceremony Class
DESCRIPTION:Delivered straight from the patron saint of Mexico\, Virgin de la Guadalupe\, a Rose Healing Ceremony uses the power of roses by placing them delicately on the body to raise its energetic state to the highest frequency. In fact\, roses have the highest vibration on the planet — pulsating up to 320 MHz! Considering a healthy body pulsates at 62 to 78 MHz units\, this is a megadose of high vibrational love! The ceremony delivers divine feminine energy and unconditional love to the body\, mind\, and soul. This class is great for individuals and couples alike! \nAs the story goes\, this healing modality was channeled by a man in Mexico who was grieving the imminent loss of his son to a terminal illness. After persistent prayers to the patron saint\, he was guided to hold single roses above the boy’s body. They each swung wildly\, signaling to the man that he should lay them there. Upon waking the next morning\, he saw his son playing in the room and completely healed\, while the roses were on the ground shriveled up. They appeared to soak up the illness and negative energy throughout the night! \nIn this class\, you will learn how to give a Rose Healing Ceremony as well as receive one. Everyone will receive healing on all levels\, but this class is especially recommended for those who: \n\n\nNeed nurturing \n\n\nAre healing from heartbreak or grief \n\n\nStruggle with anxiety and depression \n\n\nNeed to open and heal their heart chakra \n\n\nHave a hard time connecting with their emotions \n\n\nNeed to connect with their femininity and have more softness in their lives \n\n\nWant to attract a relationship or want to have more love in their relationship \n\n\nAre very action-oriented and need to practice being in more of a state of receptivity \n\n\n\n\nPlease book here. \n\n* * PLEASE BRING A DOZEN ROSES TO THE CLASS.* * \nAbout Christine + Brendon \nTwin flame husband-and-wife team\, Christine and Brendon\, are naturally gifted energy healers and intuitives. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ne-ko — Paintings by Hiroki Otsuka
DESCRIPTION:CRS is proud to present “Ne-Ko\,” an exhibition featuring a selection of sumi-e or ink paintings by Japanese artist and illustrator Hiroki Otsuka. Fusing traditional black ink wash with fluid brushwork reminiscent of Japan’s rich artistic legacy with playful portrayals of cats\, Otsuka produces a striking visual formula that is both whimsical and refined. This exhibition will open on October 22 and will be on view through November 30. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Saturday\, November 10\, 2018 from 6 – 8 pm. \nCats are beloved in Japanese culture as symbols of good fortune\, and have long claimed a monopoly on cuteness in mainstream media. Otsuka employs the varying shades and subtle tones of ink washes alongside animated brush strokes to capture the vibrant spirit\, graceful movement\, poise\, and yes\, cuteness\, of the world’s favorite felines. \nABOUT HIROKI OTSUKA  \nA professional comic book illustrator since 1994\, Brooklyn-based Japanese artist/illustrator Hiroki Otsuka has illustrated for a number of major Japanese publications. In 2005\, Hiroki Otsuka’s focus shifted from graphic to fine arts\, working predominantly with traditional sumi ink used in Japanese calligraphy. Hiroki Otsuka’s debut solo show at Brooklyn’s Stay Gold Gallery in 2005 prompted The New Yorker to write that his works “push the populist youth quotient through the roof.” Since then\, his work has appeared in galleries throughout the United States and Japan\, and has been featured in international art fairs in New York\, Tokyo and Basel\, Switzerland. He’s been exhibited at major art institutions such as The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles (Nothing Moments\, 2007) and in academic settings such as Pittsburgh University Art Gallery (Making Faces: Depiction of Women in Japan from Edo to Today\, 2009). In 2007\, Hiroki Otsuka was featured in Japan Society’s centennial exhibition Making a Home\, curated by Eric C. Shiner\, that highlighted 33 Japanese contemporary artists living and working in New York. Berlin’s Kunstraum Richard Sorge held a major exhibition of Hiroki Otsuka’s paintings and murals in 2009 entitled Everything to More. The same year\, Otsuka provided the integrated illustrations for choreographer Jeremy Wade’s critically acclaimed multimedia dance there is no end to more\, a Japan Society commission which had its world premiere in New York in December 2009. Hiroki Otsuka served as Japan Society’s first-ever manga artist-in-residence during the exhibition Graphic Heroes\, Magic Monsters: Japanese Prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from the Arthur R. Miller Collection. Most recently\, a show of new work\, “Men and Cats\,” has been hung at the Wayfarers Gallery in Brooklyn\, and in the Woodland/Shimko Galleries in Provincetown\, Mass. and Palm Springs. https://www.hirokiotsuka.nyc \nARTIST STATEMENT \nNe-Ko \nCats have captivated Japanese artists for more than a thousand years. In the Tale of Genji\, the masterwork of 11th century literature\, a cat sets the plot in motion by knocking over a screen\, and the moment has been captured time and again in prints and paintings. With the arrival of ukiyo-e\, the woodblock printing style of the 17th century\, the homes of Japan became populated by the world’s first great wave of cat art\, featuring the animals both in their natural form and walking upright in kimonos. Perhaps it is not surprising that Hello Kitty\, the most famous illustrated feline\, also comes from Japan. \nHiroki Otsuka’s work consistently mixes the media and methods of high and popular art. In “Ne-Ko\,” which means cat in Japanese\, he approaches this time-honored subject. Otsuka uses the traditional\, black-ink style of sumi painting to capture the animals’ pose and self-possession. But it is his eye as a manga cartoonist of 25 years that gives his subjects the motion and playfulness that has endeared them to their human companions. \nABOUT THE CURATOR \nExhibition Curator Reina Miyake is a recent graduate of Vassar College with a BA in Art History. She is a lifelong resident of NYC\, which cultivated her love of visual art and the color black. This is her first time curating an exhibition.

From an early age\, Cesar studied piano\, drawing\, painting\, soccer\, and eventually trumpet. As he strove to attain a formal dance education he encountered his first yoga teacher. In 2004\, Cesar devoted himself to the ancient practice of Yoga and began to unravel his own body’s wisdom. The allied arts of Yoga and Dance became his tools of self-inquiry and self-expression. Cesar practices and specializes in Asthanga and Hatha Yoga. While training as a triathlete\, Cesar experienced a time of inner awakening and an acquisition of an intelligent and constructive way to hone the power of will to train the body both mentally and kinesthetically. Cesar takes the psycho-physical balance he attained as an athlete and directes it into his yoga practice. He has been teaching yoga\, and embracing also other forms of energy work like Tai-Chi Chuan and Qi-Gong. \nRebecca Blomberg\nShe was born in Gothenburg\, Sweden but spent most of her childhood in Malaysia and Egypt. She has trained in a variety of dancestyles including hip hop\, ballet\, breaking\, acrobatics\, bachata\, and Salsa both cuban\, line style on 1 and New York style on 2. It was in Egypt her love for dance grew strong. After returning back to Sweden at the age 12\, she began dancing at many different dance schools all around in Gothenburg. At 19 years old she backpacked around South and Central America to explore different Latin dancestyles. It was in Cuba her passion for salsa developed. After training and teaching in Gothenburg she moved to New York City where she graduated with exellence at Broadway Dance Center and at Peridance Capezio Center NYC. During her first year in New York\, she auditioned for the world famous\, exceptionally talented director and dancer Shani Talmor. The audition was to be a part of her Lady styling team ”Shani’s Girls”. Although she auditioned for the semi-pro team Shani was so impressed by her that she put her directly on the pro team. After travelling around America with Shani’s Girls and performing for almost two years\, she returned back home to Sweden. Although Rebecca had already made plans to return to New York she started performing with a bachata team in Gothenburg. It was at one of their bachata shows that the dancer\, choreographer and director Adriana Mendes noticed her. She was asked to join Adriana’s successful salsa lady styling team ”Salseras.” The first major performance was at the Berlin Salsa Congress\, where the show impressed the world salsa champion BNF director and founder Eider Rúa. He immediately invited the team to perform as his special guests in the 3rd Dubai Latin Festival. Together with Salseras Rebecca continued to perform in Gothenburg\, Stockholm\, and Los Angeles. When returning to New York City\, she started training with Baila Society. She auditioned for the team and was one of the three\, out of more than 50 people applying that was picked to join the team. Shortly after the Founding Partner and Artist Director Daniel Enskat chose her as his dance partner to perform at Nordic Fund Selection Forum in Stockholm in front of an audience of the leading investors and asset managers in Scandinavia. She also performed with Baila Society at the Peridance Capezio Center 31st Anniversary Gala and at Cielo Latino Gala in New York City. The night ended very successfully with donations of 1 million dollars. As of her return to New York City she had been working with music video directors Ulysses & Jessy Terrero\, where she got a principal roll in the music video “Forgiveness” by Enrique Iglesias & Nicky Jam and was also featured in “Borro Cassette” by Maluma.

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Concert Series Vol. 3: 7 word chanting 靈山會相 & tea ceremony
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents 7 word chanting Yeongsanhoesang 靈山會相\, featuring Korean traditional music performed by gamin (piri\, saenghwang) and Min Kyung Park  (haegeum) accompanied by a tea ceremony performed by Korean tea master Sei-Ryun Chun. Following the performance\, there will be a short talk about Korean tea ceremony and Q&A with the artists. \nFor this event\, which is Vol. 3 of the Crossing Boundaries — Echoes of Korea — Concert Series curated by gamin\, she would like to introduce the Korean concept of Pungnyu\, which is defined as an artistic form of recreation incorporating elements of nature\, life\, and art. Pungnyu is intrinsic to a tasteful lifestyle and to Koreans’ collective and individual entertainment culture. It literally means “streams of wind.” Sharing tea\, playing music\, writing\, and observing the changing of the seasons are traditional pastimes used for transcending the material or secular aspects of life and cultivating a peaceful mind. Participating in a tea ceremony quiets the mind and opens the senses\, allowing us to experience more of the subtlety and depth of the music performance. \nBoth the music and tea ceremony presented in this program have been handed down to us from medieval Buddhist practices. As Buddhism in Korea fell in and out of favor through the centuries\, both the music and the tea ceremony were frequently revised to serve the times. Artists today continue to find ways to explore and extend these traditional art forms in ways that speak to the present moment and connect us not only to our heritage but to one another. \nTickets are $25 and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. Students/seniors with valid ID are $15 at the door. \nAbout the Program \nTea ceremony by Sei-Ryun Chun\nPiri & saenghwang played by gamin\nHaegeum played by Min Kyung Park \nOriginally a vocal piece with lyrics drawing on the words of the Buddha’s sermon in Mount Yeongsan\, India\, Yeongsanhoesang became purely instrumental in the 15th century. The music has undergone continuous change with the current version taking form sometime in the 19th century. There are many versions of the suite\, which typically includes 8–9 pieces. While the genesis of the suite is not completely certain\, the first piece of the suite\, “Sangryeongsan” appears to be the foundation for the suite. The following pieces in the suite include variations on “Sangryeongsan\,” as well as standard musical forms and dance pieces of the Joseon era (1392-1910). “Sangryeongsan\,” the slowest and longest piece in the suite\, progresses gracefully and gently like the flow of water. \nThe Korean tea ceremony is distinguished by its emphasis on preparing and enjoying tea with a natural manner and minimum of ritualized formality. Originally\, it was directly connected with Buddhist practices\, but today it can be enjoyed by everyone. Cha (tea) was introduced to Korea around the 6th or 7th century from China. Some Korean scholars or Buddhist monks who traveled to China probably brought tea with them and began to drink in Korea. In the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392)\, Korean tea culture became popular with the rise of Buddhism as a national religion. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910)\, the Korean tea culture declined as Confucianism replaced Buddhism as a spiritual mainstream. Buddhism was repressed and became separated from the public. In the early 19th century\, a leading Korean philosopher\, Dasan Jeong Yakyong (1762-1836)\, and the Korean Buddhist Seon (Zen) master Chou Uisun (1786-1866)\, known as the “Father of Korean Tea\,” played key roles in reviving the long lost Korean tea tradition\, which continues today. \nAbout the Artists \nTea master Sei Ryun Chun was born in Busan\, Korea in 1956 and grew up in an artistic family. Majoring in fine art at Kunkuk University in 1979\, she studied sculpture and painting. After graduation\, she taught at Shinjung middle and high schools. In 1981\, she moved to America and studied etching at the New Milford Art Center in New Jersey and New York University in New York. She has also written extensively about art. She received the AHL Foundation artist’s prize in 2000. She has had 14 solo exhibitions and participated in the Miami Art Fair and Fine Art Fair San Francisco. She has been curating exhibitions in New York and New Jersey. She is currently incorporating her mastery of the traditional Korean tea ceremony into her exhibitions and presentations. seiryunchun.com \ngamin is a master practitioner of the piri\, taepyongso (double reed instruments)\, and saenghwang (reed mouth organ). Currently\, as a yisuja (designated master) of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No.46 for piri court music and Daechita\, she strives to both preserve and enhance traditional Korean music. At Seoul National University and as a member and assistant principal player of the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra\, Gamin has used her virtuosity to perform authentic jeongak (classical court music) and sinawi (shaman ritual music)\, as well as new compositions for her instruments. gamin-music.com \nHaegeum instrumentalist Minkyung Park is a recipient of the 67th Chosun Daily Debut Concert and was selected as 2006 Kumho Young Artist by Kumho Asiana Foundation for Arts and Culture\, which discovers and supports nationally talented instrumentalists. She has performed at many prestigious venues internationally including ‘tea music – longing for friends’ in NYC\, combining art performance with harmonization of various genre of music and arts.
