SUMMARY:CRS Healing Circle: Meditation + Whirling Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Healing Circle + Whirling (Sufi Dance) Prayer! \nLed by Sufi Dance Artist Lâle Sayoko and CRS Healer Christopher Pelham\, we create a safe space in which to let go of our small selves and recognize the divinity in one another and within ourselves. When we do so\, we can trust ourselves to fully experience our feelings with the awareness that they cannot hurt us\, or overwhelm us\, or change us at all\, because we are still as Love created us. \nAfter we’ll enjoy social time with tea and snacks. \nThe participation fee is $20 with advanced registration and $25 at the door. Direct registration link:\nhttps://is.gd/B9HElo \nThrough whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn\, that we may share our divine strength and bear witness to the divinity in others. \nIf you are quiet and in a state of prayer when you Turn\, offering everything of yourself to God\, then when your body is spinning\, there is a completely still point in the center… The heavens respond; and all the invisible kingdoms join in the dance. But the world does not understand. They think we Turn in order to go into some sort of trance. It is true that sometimes we do go into that state you call ecstasy\, but that is only when we know and experience at the same time. We do not Turn for ourselves. We turn around in the way we do so that the Light of God may descend upon the earth. As you act as a conduit in the Turn\, the light comes through the right hand\, and the left hand brings it into this world… We turn for God and for the world\, and it is the most beautiful thing you can imagine. — Mevlevi Shaikh Suleyman Hyatt Dede \nSufi Dance Instructor Lâle Sayoko lives to embody and transmit the voice of spirit through music and dance. As CRS resident Sufi Dance instructor\, choreographer\, performing artist\, and musical curator\, she loves to welcome people into this holy practice to explore and share their own divinity. After a long professional dance career\, she retired to support her young daughter through a life-threatening medical crisis. Several years later she discovered that she could whirl as a form of prayer to support her daughter and began studying Sufi Dance with Paris-based Sufi Artist Rana Gorgani. In April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi Dance training. She currently teaches Sufi Dance classes at CRS every first Thursday of the month from 7 – 8:30 pm and leads the CRS Healing Circles + Whirling Prayer that take place every third Thursday of the month from 7:15 – 9 pm.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/lale.sayoko \nChristopher Pelham is a spiritual healer/counselor/teacher/artist who draws on practices from ACIM\, Non-Violent Communication\, improvisational theater\, Sufism\, and contemporary shamanism to help people remember who they really are. Kimura has concertized in about 20 countries around the world based in New York and Japan. Following her studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts\, she studied at Institute of Traditional Japanese Music\, an affiliate of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Japan. Kimura was awarded a scholarship from the Agency of Cultural Affairs of Japan. Her teachers include Kono Kameyama\, Akiko Nishigata and Senko Yamabiko\, a Living National Treasure. As a koto soloist\, Kimura has performed Daron Hagen’s Koto Concerto: Genji with the Wintergreen Music Festival Orchestra conducted by Mei-Ann Chen and several string quartets. She presents a new type of mochi that doesn’t quite exist in Japan by infusing New York’s locally-produced ingredients with Japan’s popular traditional desserts —the stuffed mochi rounds\, such as daifuku and sakura-mochi — and mixing in rin\, the element of restrained grace. Website: rin-nyc.com | https://www.instagram.com/rin_nyc

SUMMARY:Vibration: SAORI KANDA Art Performance with LÄLE SAYOKO
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents VIBRATION: SAORI KANDA art performance with Sufi Dance artist LÄLE SAYOKO on Friday\, Dec 6 2019 from 7 – 9 pm. VIBRATION brings together two internationally touring artists known for improvisationally translating music into visual art and movement. In conjunction with the live performance\, an exhibition of Kanda’s paintings will be on view in the CRS lobby. \nPainting with bare hands\, brushes\, sometimes throwing paint\, 2019 Independent Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair Audience Award Winner SAORI KANDA brings to life delicious large-scale scenes of nature and fantasy inspired by her love of Japanese art (both traditional and modern) as well as the flowing Arabesques to which she was exposed growing up in the Middle East. While SAORI paints\, LÄLE SAYOKO\, in a free-spirited approach to the Sufi practice known as sema (spiritual listening)\, follows the music’s vibrations to unfold the ever-flowing movements of nature\, such as the opening and closing of a flower dancing in the wind (lâle means tulip in Turkish). \nTickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and are available online and at CRS. Students and seniors are $20. A limited number of free tickets for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult are available online. \nThis event is supported by the GLOBUS RYOKAN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE program and is one of a series of events in early December featuring Saori Kanda across the city. \nThe Globus Ryokan Artist-in-Residence program seeks to stimulate cross-cultural dialogue by providing opportunities for Japanese artists to live and exhibit in New York City. The GLOBUS FAMILY has long been associated with cultural interchange between Japan and United States. They have sponsored events at eminent institutions including Japan Society and Asia Society. Their scope spans dance\, theater\, cinema\, art\, craft\, and performance groups. For more information\, visit: www.nycwashitsu.com/ \nABOUT ARTIST / CONTEMPORARY ART PERFORMER SAORI KANDA \nA visual artist and live painting performer presented around the world by numerous festivals\, museums and companies (Nissan\, Maserati\, Cartier\, etc.)\, Saori Kanda uses her entire body to feel the waves of music and draw her unique piece of art on a large canvas as if she dances. It is reminiscent of the style of abstract expressionism such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. She breathes a life into the canvas. Her work grows and become filled with freewheeling spirits by experiencing the cycle of destruction and rebirth. She\, as a painter\, becomes a part of her own work and her outstanding performance attracts offers from all over the world.\nsaorian.com/ \nSaori Kanda’s work and performance will also be presented in: \nTOKYO EMERGENCE:  an exhibition of 10 artists from Japan presented by Tagboat\nOpening Reception:  Tuesday\, December 3 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm\nOpening Art Performance by SAORI KANDA with SIVA:  Tuesday\, December 3 from 7:30 – 8 pm\nVenue:  WhiteBox\, 213 E 121st St\, New York\, NY 10035\ntagboat.com/store/about/en/ \nABOUT SUFI DANCE ARTIST LÄLE SAYOKO \nLäle Sayoko lives to embody and transmit the voice of spirit through music and dance. As CRS resident Sufi Dance instructor\, choreographer\, performing artist\, and musical curator\, she loves to welcome people into this holy practice to explore and share their own divinity. She intermittently tours internationally with BELLA GAIA\, a live concert blending music\, dance\, technology\, and NASA satellite imagery inspired by the experience of astronauts viewing the earth from space. “Sublime” — Village Voice. \nOne of the founding members of Japan’s famous SAMANYOLU professional belly dance group in Tokyo\, Läle went on to a long solo career performing throughout the northeastern USA and touring with United Kingdom’s Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on over a 100 city tour encompassing the U.K.\, as well as Turkey’s Baba Zula. About six years ago\, she was forced to retire to support her young daughter through a life-threatening medical crisis. Bucherer\, Vivienne Tam\, MDNA SKIN\, Shu Uemura\, etc. \nLIFE PAINT — Saori Kanda’s Creation \nSaori Kanda calls her own creative work ‘LIFE PAINT.’ \nTo draw life. To draw throughout her life. Or to draw staking her life. \nYou may take her words however you can. \nTo draw. \nFor her\, it is not just to create artworks but it is to record her encounters and her growth. What you see in her work always is a festival of lines and colors that breathes heavily holding enthusiasm within. It is like a flower\, like a body\, or like a landscape of an unknown country. \nWho is Saori Kanda that creates this? \nHaving spent her childhood in Baghdad and Dubai\, she says she always had a longing for Japan\, a far country from where she was. Certainly\, in her work\, it seems that influences from Arabic world and elements of Japanese roots are inseparably interwoven in her depiction of human body\, detailed patterns\, and the curves of her flowing brushstrokes. \nShe does live with unbridled enthusiasm. She draws\, longs for encounters with people and places\, travels\, talks\, listens\, gets worried\, breaks\, laughs\, creates\, sheds tears\, lives\, communicates\, and again\, draws. With all her strength and all her heart. \nIt does not matter if it is a live painting performance\, a creation of tableau\, or a collaboration with other fields such as music\, fashion\, and so on. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Matters — Works on Silk by Aomi Kikuchi
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents MATTERS\, an exhibition of nine works by the award-winning Brooklyn-based artist AOMI KIKUCHI. Best known for her exquisite Yuzen silk kimono dyeing and work with other delicate fabrics\, which have been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world\, KIKUCHI here depicts frogs on triple-layered silk organza in a variety of natural settings as well as among human-made objects. \nTo maintain the softness and ‘unreliability’ of the gauze\, she refrains from sewing or tightly stretching it. The fragility and insubstantiality of the images echo the impermanence and insubstantiality of the physical world. The elements of nature\, while ever changing\, evoke a sense of peace which contrasts with the insatiable temptations evoked by the depicted consumer goods. Kikuchi’s work invites us to meditate on this ephemerality and discover that its acceptance brings a sense of inner peace. \nThe exhibition will be on view from December 11\, 2019 – February 4\, 2020. The public is invited to meet the artist at the CRS Holiday Celebration on Saturday\, December 14\, 2019. \nMedium: Triple-layered silk organza\, Acid Dye\, Pigment\nKikuchi dyed three layered pieces of silk organza simultaneously with acid dyes and pigments after drawing outlines with a gold color Sumi ink. She then steamed them to fix colors\, pressed them\, and separated them to be framed. \nMethod: Kikuchi’s original method based on Japanese Yuzen Kimono Dye\nKikuchi uses special brushes made for Yuzen Kimono dye to make beautiful gradations. The size of the brush varies from 3mm to 15cm. She innovated Yuzen kimono dye techniques to establish her original method with layered fabrics and without rice glue lines as water resistance. Instead of glue resistance\, she manipulates dye liquid to prevent it from spreading outside of her hand-drawn gold Sumi outline.\nHer method makes it possible to dye larger and layered fabrics. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nMy work often uses creatures as a motif to express the heart of Buddha’s benevolence that human beings and all creatures are equally important. \nFrogs in particular are special to me. I lived with the frog named “Bell” for several years. Bell eats a small larva twice a week\, but otherwise he/she always sits like a Zen monk and does not move. Unlike us\, he/she didn’t lie down or extend his/her legs. Bell ended his/her life and no more exists. \nHumans have various desires\, and if they are not fulfilled\, they suffer. If they are fulfilled\, they will be obsessed with new desires and will not be satisfied. \nA jellyfish drifts in the waves and lives a life just to get food. We sometimes stop and look at the simple way of life in the aquarium and think its life is even enviable. \nGoldfish were bred by humans to appear more beautiful. The desire to see beautiful things gave goldfish bigger eyes\, fins and a fuller stomach than necessary. Human desires also afflict goldfish. \nThe message of my work is that the only way for us to live a mindful life is through understanding that desire creates pain\, and there is nothing in the world that will never change and nothing that will last forever. \nABOUT AOMI KIKUCHI \nAomi Kikuchi is a creator of innovative fine arts inspired by Buddha’s philosophy and concepts of impermanence\, insubstantiality\, and suffering in our lives. She started her career as a fashion designer and worked for more than 25 years as a professional Yuzen silk kimono dyer. While she has a strong obsession with silk fabrics\, she also works with other materials that have a femininity and fragility such as fiber\, goose down\, and cotton flower. Her artistic practice has been expanding from two-dimensional work to include installations\, sculpture\, and film. She received her BFA from Kyoto University of Art and Design and her MFA from Pratt Institute. Her works have been exhibited all over the world\, including this year at the Yukyung Museum in South Korea\, in the 35th Anniversary Pratt in Venice show at the Steuben Gallery at Pratt Institute\, and at the Wajun-Kaikan Gallery in the famous Chion-in Temple in Kyoto\, Japan\, among many others. \naomikikuchi.com\ninstagram.com/aomikikuchi

SUMMARY:ZERO GRASSES: Workshop & Concert by Vocalist/Multi-Instrumentalist/Composer Jen Shyu
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents CROSSING BOUNDARIES Concert Series Vol. 11: ZERO GRASSES\, curated\, created and performed by Steinway Artist\, Guggenheim Fellow and USA Fellow JEN SHYU (photo by Caterina Di Perri). \nThis powerful autobiographical work arose out of an intense period of self-reflection following the sudden death of JEN SHYU’s father and a visit to a fertility clinic. Effortlessly weaving together music\, monologue and video projection\, SHYU traces the threads of her life to explore the painful terrain of expectation\, ambition\, longing and love. \nCommissioned by John Zorn and premiered Oct 30 at National Sawdust\, ZERO GRASSES reunites SHYU with Romanian director Alexandru Mihail\, who also directed her acclaimed one-woman show Nine Doors\, which premiered at National Sawdust in 2017 and was reprised at last year’s Resonant Bodies Festival. The piano for this concert is being provided with generous support by Steinway. \nPrior to the concert\, starting at 6:30 pm\, Jen will lead a short participatory Intermedia Workshop for the audience. The performance itself will begin at 8 pm. The workshop is open to all artists and art lovers alike. Everyone will be writing\, singing\, moving\, acting\, and improvising\, so please try to wear comfy clothes and shoes\, and feel free to bring any instruments or just bring yourselves. \nIn honor of Jen’s father\, and in partnership with WEARTH\, for every ticket sold to this performance\, a tree will be planted in the Tsu Pin Shyu | 徐澤濱 Forest in a conserved forest in Saskatchewan\, Canada. \n \nComposition\, vocals\, piano\, sound design\, Japanese biwa\, Taiwanese moon lute\, dance: Jen Shyu\nDirector: Alexandru Mihail\nSet and Projection Design: Kristen Robinson and Kate Campbell\nCostume Design: Elizabeth Caitlin Ward\nLighting Design: Solomon Weisbard\nKeynote Operator: Neil Beckmann\nMedia Production: Kinetic Expression LLC \nThis is the eighth and final concert in the series during 2019 and will take place on December 13\, 2019 at 8 pm at CRS. \nTickets are $25 in advance $30 at the door. Students and seniors with valid ID can purchase tickets for $20 at the door. Tickets are available online at crsny.org\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at CRS. \nMORE ABOUT ZERO GRASSES \nZERO GRASSES premiered at NATIONAL SAWDUST on Oct 30\, 2019 as part of John Zorn’s Stone Commissioning Series. \n“The title and seed of ZERO GRASSES came from my ongoing collaboration and conversations with Garin Nugroho\, the great Indonesian filmmaker and stage director\, who directed my first solo theatrical work\, Solo Rites: Seven Breaths. In light of Seven Breaths and Nine Doors\, we began to discuss the number zero and its power as a metaphor for loss and disconnection\, as in the deterioration of humans’ ability to communicate with nature\, to read the signs of nature\, which is something I was already wanting to manifest artistically. So when John Zorn asked me to create a new work on October 30\, 2019\, for his series at National Sawdust\, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to realize this vision. \n“Zero Grasses is dedicated to my dearest father\, Tsu Pin Shyu | 徐澤濱 (January 19\, 1941 – April 2\, 2019)\, who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep in his favorite chair during a nap while I was on a research fellowship in Japan. I was informed via email from the local sheriff who arrived with 911 whom Mom called when she couldn’t wake up Dad. Before I left for Japan February of 2019\, Zero Grasses was rooted in environmental concerns and an unforeseen ending of a long-term relationship when I turned 40. After rushing to Texas to take care of my mother and in the following months processing Dad’s death\, I worked intensely with director Alexandru Mihail on shaping Zero Grasses. Its themes expanded to include legacy\, family\, race\, sexuality\, fertility vs. barrenness in land and in our bodies\, technology’s effect on our connection with nature and to each other\, our own conflicting ambitions\, and an investigation of life when Mom handed me my childhood diaries from a shelf in Dad’s closet when we were cleaning it out and deciding what to keep of his and what to give away. In performing this work\, I am constantly reminded that it was Dad who inspired me to live life as I envision it. Zero Grasses is an hommage to all those who shape our lives in changing the world around us.” \n— Jen Shyu \nWatch the music video for one of the songs from the show\, “Life As You Envision”:\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nGuggenheim Fellow\, USA Fellow\, Doris Duke Artist\, Fulbright scholar\, multilingual vocalist-composer-instrumentalist-dancer JEN SHYU is “one of the most creative vocalists in contemporary improvised music” (The Nation). Born in Peoria\, Illinois\, to Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrants\, she was the first female and vocalist as bandleader on Pi Recordings\, now having produced seven albums. A Stanford University graduate\, she speaks 10 languages and has performed at Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, BAM\, Metropolitan Museum of Art\, etc. Her acclaimed album “Song of Silver Geese” (Pi 2017) was among NY Times’ “Best Albums of 2017.” \nShyu has won commissions and support from NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship\, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation\, MAP Fund\, US-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship from Japan-US Friendship Commission and National Endowment for the Arts\, Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works\, Exploring the Metropolis\, New Music USA\, Jazz Gallery\, and Roulette\, as well as fellowships from the Fulbright Scholar Program\, Civitella Ranieri Foundation\, Asian Cultural Council\, Hermitage Artist Retreat\, Yaddo\, MacDowell Colony\, Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Korean Ministry of Sports\, Culture\, and Tourism. \nShe premiered ZERO GRASSES October 30\, 2019\, at National Sawdust on John Zorn’s Commissioning Series. She’s touring her solo work Nine Doors–one of NY Times’ “5 Standout Shows” (2018)–on her 50-state +DC tour of creativity workshops in rural towns across America\, promoting cross cultural / generational exchange. Jen Shyu is a Steinway Artist. \njenshyu.com \nABOUT CROSSING BOUNDARIES \nNow in its second year\, CROSSING BOUNDARIES is a performance series devoted to creating unforgettable live art experiences that dissolve boundaries between performers and audiences\, traditional and new music\, and the local and the global\, bringing people together and promoting the awareness that we each possess a limitless creativity inside us.  \nThe 2019 season of CROSSING BOUNDARIES is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement\, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by LMCC. LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks\, resources\, and support\, to create vibrant\, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond. \n  \n

SUMMARY:USAATO Clothing Exhibition & Sale
DESCRIPTION:CRS welcomes you to the winter exhibition of USAATO eco clothing. The USAATO staff will personally help to select and coordinate the garments that would suit you best! \nUSAATO shares beautiful traditional clothes made in Chiang Mai\, Thailand. The clothing is designed by Japanese haute couture designer Usaburo Sato with fabrics made by the caring hands of the Thai people. The fabrics are mostly made of hand-spun cotton\, silk and hemp\, picked in mountains and villages\, naturally dyed from plants and fruits\, then made into clothes with traditional weaving machines by women in local villages of north and northeast Thailand and Laos. The attention\, time and passion put into the creation of these clothes give it a sense of energy that can be felt on your body and in your soul. Soft and warm\, relaxing wears suitable for both outside and home. \nNatural and local\, handmade incense by Queen of Incense (QOI) will also be on sale! \n \nAll fabrics are gathered at “USAATO SIAM” in Chiang Mai and then delivered for the sewing process. USAATO clothes are sewn by individuals and groups outside Chiang Mai. (One part of our products is from machine-weaving.) \nThe products are mostly women’s clothes\, but men’s clothes\, children’s clothes\, samue (monk’s working clothes)\, and rakui (pajamas) and accessories are also available. Approximate prices for tops are from $70 to $180 while bottoms are from $90 to $180. \nUSAATO clothes are selling all over the world at pop-up exhibitions organized by USAATO partners called coordinators. USSATO NEW YORK holds exhibitions every few months at CRS. \nWearing hemp clothing promotes personal health in a variety of ways. Hemp/ cotton blends are both more absorbent humid and more mildew resistant than 100% cotton. Fabric made using 50% or higher of hemp will block more UV rays than non-hemp fabrics. And have you ever noticed that hemp-made garments don’t create static? That is because hemp has the same net static charge as human skin\, resonating perfectly with our electromagnetic fields. \nContact : CRS 212-677-8621　or 914-703-8018 Senko or universalcreation1000@gmail.com \nhttp://www.usaato.com

She currently teaches Sufi Dance classes at CRS every first Thursday of the month from 7 – 8:30 pm and leads the CRS Healing Circles + Whirling Prayer that take place every third Thursday of the month from 7:15 – 9 pm.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/lale.sayoko \nChristopher Pelham is a spiritual healer/counselor/teacher/artist who draws on practices from A Course in Miracles\, Non-Violent Communication\, improvisational theater\, Sufism\, and contemporary shamanism to help people remember who they really are. He is the Director and co-founder of CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing). He has also taught and/or offered healing in London\, in Japan\, at the 2018 Awakening to the One Mind Retreat\, and at the 2017 Enlight Festival of A Course in Miracles in Ibiza\, Spain.\nhttp://www.chrispelham.com

SUMMARY:Guided Meditations Inspired by A Course in Miracles
DESCRIPTION:Given by Yasuko Kasaki\n(and by Makiko Mizuta and Christopher Pelham when she is away each March\, July\, and Nov)\nTuesdays from 6:30 – 7 pm\nFree\nhttp://www.meetup.com/ACIM-meditation/ \nPlease join us in the sharing of miracles. Here\, your mind can come to rest and you can remember true peace. No experience with meditation is required\, and everyone is welcome. We ask only that you make it your intention to sit still\, quiet in body and mind\, and to listen to; receive and follow my instruction to the best of your ability. You will learn to meditate as you practice. Please arrive for Meditation before 6:30 pm as we don’t allow latecomers to enter. \nEach week we will share with you a different inspirational message from Holy Spirit. This may take the form of creative visualization exercises\, or instruction about the nature and purpose of meditation\, or about our true nature and relationship to ourselves\, to one another\, and to the world. In a sense\, this is both a meditation practice and a meditation class. \n\nSome students have been coming regularly for a number of years. Others drop in and out as they have time or need. Some come to learn and grow\, others more so simply to calm down\, to take time out from the frenetic pace of their busy lives. If you are new and feeling uncertain or shaky\, do not hesitate to introduce yourself to some of the other students\, to ask questions before or after. Try to observe and emulate the stillness and concentration of others around you whom you sense are most grounded. Soon\, you\, in turn\, may provide inspiration and guidance for others. \nWhile the principles are based on A Course in Miracles (ACIM)\, it does not matter if you are unfamiliar with ACIM or are not prepared to study it outside of this meditation. You can still take from this practice some very practical\, effective lessons\, tools\, and experiences that can enable you to lead a more peaceful\, purposeful\, fulfilling and loving life.

SUMMARY:Persian Daf (Sufi drum) classes
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends\, we are excited to have Kamyar Arsani‘s Persian daf lessons at CRS on a monthly or near monthly basis! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn to play a magical instrument from a master who learned from masters in Iran. Kamyar has been playing and singing for decades and recently for our Sufi Dance events at CRS when he is in town and taking us ever deeper into the heart. \nDaf is a big frame drum with lots of rings inside that you can shake when you play for added effect. It is an integral part of Sufi and Persian music because of the variety of sounds it can produce and its ability to induce trance. \nLet’s learn the basic techniques together so we can play for one another at our Sufi events including hopefully at our next public Sufi night on September 28! \n1:00 – 2:15 pm Beginners Daf Class\n2:30 – 3:45 pm Intermediate Daf Class\n1 class $50\nboth classes $70 \nBring your own Daf or frame drum\, a pen & a 3–line or 5–line blank musical staff notebook (or paper\, which you can find templates of online to print). \nSome extra Dafs are available to rent ($5 cash) for the class\, but you must RSVP to chris@crsny.org because they are limited and you will want to get your own so you can practice! \nWhile many different Dafs are available for purchase online\, one such as this one —which has a synthetic head\, is reasonably priced at $119\, has good tone and construction\, is not too heavy\, and can be delivered in a few days by DHL — would be a great choice for learning on:\nhttps://salamuzik.com/products/professional-daf-rad-404 \nAbout Instructor Kamyar Arsani \n“Kamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer and songwriter born and raised in Tehran\, Iran. With his focus on Daf (Persian frame drum)\, through years he expanded circle of his instruments to Drums\, Percussions\, Guitar\, Ukulele and Melodica. He currently resides in Washington D.C\, teaching and performing around DMV area and working with individuals with Autism. \nKamyar began Daf lessons with Master Bijan Kamkar. Kamyar has spent over a decade performing and researching the Daf and its roots. SUMMARY:Sufi Music & Dance Concert with Kamyar Arsani & Friends
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents a soulful program of Sufi and Persian music performed by D.C. based Percussionist/Vocalist Kamyar Arsani and his students with whirling by Sufi Dance Artist Läle Sayoko and other members of the CRS Sufi Dance community. The program will take place on Saturday\, January 11\, 2020 from 5 – 6 pm. Tickets are $20 and light refreshments will be served. \nSufi dance or Sama means spiritual listening and its purpose is to transcend physical experience and melt into Oneness with the Divine. CRS presents a variety of Sufi dance\, music\, meditation and visual art programs\, curated by Läle Sayoko\, in order to share these peace-building practices with participants from all backgrounds. \nSufism\, as the mystical dimension of Islam\, preaches peace\, tolerance and pluralism\, while encouraging music as a way of deepening one’s relationship with the Creator. The pain of [perceived] separation from the Creator is at the core of Sufi lyrics and music; and hence the intense longing to dissolve the physical realm and transcend into the spiritual universe with Sama’a\, the practice of listening to music\, chanting and whirling\, and finally culminating in spiritual ecstasy (wajd).\n— from “Sufi Music:  The Song of the Soul” by Dr Suvarnalata Rao\, The India Times \nKamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer and songwriter born and raised in Tehran\, Iran. At age 7\, Arsani began studying the daf (Persian frame drum) with Master Bijan Kamkar. He also spent time playing meditative rhythms for hours at a time for Sufis. In 2009 the Green Revolution in Iran brought Kamyar and his family to Washington\, D.C.\, where he has been based ever since. He travels up and won the east coast playing daf and other instruments and singing and performing Sufi and Persian folk songs as well as his own compositions and contemporary music of all kinds. \nEvery month Kamyar Arsani travels to NYC to offer Persian Daf lessons at CRS. The Daf is a frame drum with lots of rings inside that you can shake when you play for added effect. It is an integral part of Sufi and Persian music because of the variety of sounds it can produce and its ability to induce trance. Kamyar learned from masters in Iran and has been playing and singing for decades. Learn more about the next daf classes on January 11 from 1 pm here. \nSufi Dance Artist Läle Sayoko lives to embody and transmit the voice of spirit through music and dance. She currently teaches Sufi Dance classes at CRS every first Thursday of the month from 7 – 8:30 pm and leads the CRS Healing Circles + Whirling Prayer that take place every third Thursday of the month from 7:15 – 9 pm. \nhttps://facebook.com/lale.sayoko\n\nhttps://youtu.be/OHmAPDEXNDw \nMore About Kamyar Arsani \n\nKamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer and songwriter born and raised in Tehran\, Iran. He currently resides in Washington D.C\, teaching and performing around DMV area and working with individuals with Autism. \nKamyar began Daf lessons with Master Bijan Kamkar. SUMMARY:CRS Healing Circle: Meditation + Whirling Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Healing Circle + Whirling (Sufi Dance) Prayer!  Our Sufi Dance Artist Läle Sayoko will be away performing with Bella Gaia in Miami so this month’s circle will be led by CRS co-founders Yasuko Kasaki and Christopher Pelham. In the first half\, we’ll focus on our visions for the year and in the second half we’ll have our usual whirling prayer time. \nAt each circle\, we create a safe space in which to let go of our small selves and recognize the divinity in one another and within ourselves. Direct registration link:\nhttps://is.gd/5lPqy7 \nThrough whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn\, that we may share our divine strength and bear witness to the divinity in others. — Mevlevi Shaikh Suleyman Hyatt Dede \nYasuko Kasaki is an internationally beloved spiritual writer\, counselor\, healer\, lecturer and translator from Tokyo\, Japan. SUMMARY:Access Clarity Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Upgrade your breathing\,\nupgrade your life. \nImmediate session results include:\n• clear thinking\n• heightened creativity\n• lowered anxiety & depression\n• release of physical tension \nWhy do we do this?\nWe are all told breathing is automatic. Unfortunately\, when we are stressed\, anxious\, depressed or heartbroken our breathing takes a hit. When this happens\, our reactivity throws us out of harmony. Like a guitar string plucked out of tune. \nWhat happens?\nIn the session everyone lays on a yoga mat. Some music is played. We breathe together in a guided pattern. That’s it. That’s all that happens on the outside. What happens on the inside is a whole other story! Natural coherence in the mind and body are restored. The inward journey can be physical\, emotional\, mental and spiritual depending on the person. At the end Rahul will guide the group back home to reintegrate with the body. Once grounded\, everyone circles up to share our adventures\, insights and clarity. \nWhere does it happen?\nWe meet each Sunday at The Center for Remembering in NYC. Mats and blankets are provided. Feel free to bring your own stuff to create a cozy coocoon. \nWho is the facilitator?\nRahul Panchal is a Master Breathwork Facilitator and Founder of Clarity Breath\, initiated at Babaji’s ashram in the Himalayas\, trained in Qi Gong at a healing center in Thailand. He then went through deep spiritual initiation living with the Huni Kuin tribe in the Amazon Rainforest. He lives in service to humbly share his gifts with you. \nWhat are the lasting effects?\nThrough this practice\, achieving the growth\, ease\, alignment and happiness you want to create will become crystal clear. Your focus will sharpen naturally and the clarity to bring your gifts out into the world will clearly manifest. At our core we are all beings of light\, love and joy. Through breath\, it’s possible to move through anything that’s pulled us off center. Once done\, we can rise up full of childlike wonder and excitement\, ready to play with life again.

SUMMARY:Sufi Dance Class with Paola Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient practice of meditative whirling known as Sufi dance or Sema (Sama in Iranian). You will learn the techniques of whirling\, but Sema is not about reproducing a certain form or aesthetic. Rather\, the technique serves as a vehicle for inner journeying. Sema means spiritual listening. Together we’ll create a sacred space in which we can safely listen to and share our true selves and experience oneness with the Divine. \nEach class consists of some explanation of the theory and technique\, exercises\, practice whirling\, and sharing and discussion of what you experienced and felt. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing like yoga pants or leggings and T shirts ( no tube top or short pants) and solid colors are recommended\, avoiding prints and shiny material which might distract the eye while whirling\, and wear socks or soft soled shoes. If you have a whirling skirt\, please feel free to bring it. \nAvoid eating a large meal for two hours prior to class. \nWhirling commonly induces dizziness or nausea. Over time\, through whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control. We empty our minds of all thoughts of the individual self as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn. Into this emptiness floods a divine fullness\, which sometimes gives rise to a state known as “mystical intoxication\,” a reflection of knowing and experiencing that you and I and the Divine are One. \nClasses are $25 ($20 with advanced registration). \nAbout Sufi Dance Instructor Paola García \nSufi Dance artist Rana Gorgani awarded Paola the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi dance training. Paola holds a Master’s Degree in Islamic Studies from Columbia University. She is a writer\, Middle Eastern Studies researcher\, translator and student of Sufism. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Persian Daf (Sufi drum) classes
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends\, please join our monthly Daf class community led by the amazing Kamyar Arsani! \nWhile many different Dafs are available for purchase online\, one such as this one —which has a synthetic head\, is reasonably priced at $119\, has good tone and construction\, is not too heavy\, and can be delivered in a few days by DHL — would be a great choice for learning on (and you can contact us for a 10% discount!):\nhttps://salamuzik.com/products/professional-daf-rad-404 \nAbout Instructor Kamyar Arsani \n“Kamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer and songwriter born and raised in Tehran\, Iran. His second choice of instrument was the kamancheh (Persian string bow instrument) and he studied it with Masters Ardeshir Kamkar and Sohrab Pournazeri. Ten years ago\, Kamyar and his family migrated to the United States around the same time that Iran’s Green Revolution was occurring. Kamyar’s songs and performances are very much inspired by the people of Iran and their history of struggle and protest. \n\n\n\nAt the time he started working as Autism classroom Teacher Assistant in Virginia and Washington DC public schools\, and the science of Behaviorism and creating motivation for students with Autism became his passion. But he did not put music behind\, Kamyar produced his first solo album in 2015\, entitled “No Freedom.” It was written on Guitar and Ukulele. The album was dedicated to those oppressed by Iranian Government. \nhttps://kamyararsani.bandcamp.com/releases \nAside from his solo work\, Kamyar also plays in other collaborations and has performed series of concerts at Kennedy Center\, Library of Congress\, Georgetown University\, UMD\, WVU and VOA. \nKamyar is also the poet and singer of “Time is Fire (TiF).” Their music has been described by Washington Post as “Music from a country that does not exist.” \nhttps://youtu.be/2rn3u92MAR8 (Kennedy Center Performance) \nKamyar takes on a different character performing with Time is Fire\, wearing his sikke (a Sufi hat representing the “tombstone of Ego”) and singing poems of resistance and freedom in English and Farsi. Within the four member band’s worldly\, funky\, post-punky\, afro-infected music\, the sikke and poems make perfect sense. Their sound has been evolving since the group first came together in 2015. Washington City Paper: “Time Is Fire could have limitless places to go.” Time is Fire recently released an EP that can be found here:\nhttps://electriccowbellrecords.bandcamp.com/album/stories-untold \nWith the new wave of hatred portrayed among our nation\, Kamyar could not sit quiet and wrote four songs inspired by Rumi and Hafez and Ferdowsi poems on his Daf\,inviting people to believe in a new spring together. He collaborated with Benjamin Schurr of Blight Records and produced an electronic backed Daf album called “Voices in the Dark” \, which can be found on Blight Records Bandcamp (Production of DC\,2018)\nhttps://music.blightrecords.org/album/voices-in-the-dark \nFor more information you can contact Kamyar at:\nKamyararsani31@gmail.com\nInstagram: @kamyararsani\nFB: Kamyar Arsani
