SUMMARY:ESSENTRICS Gentle Stretch with Betty
DESCRIPTION:Essentrics is a full-body stretching and toning workout that’s great for most levels. This class builds strength\, flexibility and range of motion while releasing stress. \nEssentrics is also known as “Classical Stretch\,” the #1 fitness show on American Public Television. It is a full-body\, dynamic stretching workout that safely shapes and rebalances the body. Essentrics conditions not only our muscles but also bones and joints. This unique stretching-in-motion program rapidly creates a long\, lean and strong physique with immediate changes to posture. Essentrics’ simple circular movements condition our joints\, while their pacing and sequencing build and strengthen connections between the body and the brain. \nEccentric vs. Concentric Training\nThe name Essentrics came from eccentric training\, a technique that strengthens muscles in stretched / lengthened positions. This contrasts with typical concentric technique such as lifting weights\, which shortens our muscles and stiffens our joints. Essentrics stretches and tones at the same time\, balancing strength and flexibility. It also builds greater force for the same energy spent\, and muscles recover faster. For these reasons eccentric training has been popular among athletes\, dancers\, seniors\, and people healing from ailments and injuries. It is also increasingly popular among people who simply desire a lean\, sculpted and balanced body. \nDynamic vs. Static Stretch\nInstead of holding poses Essentrics stretches while staying in motion. It therefore not only conditions our muscles but also lubricates our joints. In addition\, the movements embody neuromuscular techniques that improve coordination as well as muscle control. Compared to static stretches\, dynamic eccentric training has proven to be far more effective in boosting range of motion\, agility\, and reducing injuries in sports and daily life. It is therefore wonderful for both athletes and non. \nStructure:\nWarm up\nStanding full-body movements using large\, rotational\, trademark exercises\nFloor work or barre work (using chairs) \nAll classes are capped at 12 people.\nUnlike most group classes Betty knows your specific needs before you arrive and is ready to cue you accordingly. \nYOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE. \nAbout the Instructor\nBetty is one of a few Essentrics instructors in the US who is fully certified at Level 4. (Only Level 4 instructors qualify to train athletes and design Essentrics routines.) She is also a Personal Trainer certified by the prestigious NASM\, placing her in a unique position to apply the Essentrics program to assist clients in a wide variety of settings. \nThroughout her training Betty has taken the initiative to attend all levels of optional Essentrics Teachers’ Workshops. She is also Red Cross-certified for First Aid\, CPR\, and AED.

We meet weekly to give one another emotional support and an opportunity for expression of feelings\, thoughts\, memories\, hopes\, insights\, and education on the subject of child abuse. \nOur meetings follow the Adult Survivors of Child Abuse (ASCA) program as designed by the Morris Center in San Francisco. The format is similar to that of 12-step programs with some significant differences. Similarities include directed readings\, short and long shares\, absence of cross-talk\, and mutual support. Differences include the replacement of the 12 steps with a list of 21 steps that are more relevant to survivors of child abuse. For more information on our meeting format\, visit the ASCA website. \nWhat Is the Basic Meeting Format? \nOpening Comments by Co-Secretaries\, Readings\nPresenter (maximum 15 minutes)\nFeedback to Presenter (10 minutes)\nShares (maximum 5 minutes each)\nClosure Comments\nAnnouncements & Closing \nWhat Do I Have to Do at Meetings? \nYou do not have to do anything. You do not have to introduce yourself and do not have to speak. You can just sit and listen if you like. This is a no pressure situation. We try to keep the atmosphere easy going and friendly. \nHow Many People Attend Meetings? \nWe average 20+ people per meeting. \nWhat Types of Child Abuse Do You Discuss? \nWe discuss the whole gamut of forms of abuse including incest\, sexual abuse by non-relatives\, violence\, emotional and verbal abuse\, and neglect. \nWhat Is the Demographic Background of Meeting Participants? \nWe have people of many races\, religions\, ethnic backgrounds\, and life style choices. We have both men and women\, most meetings with a 50-50 split by gender. Our participants cover the adult age range. \nCan I Join? \nWe welcome any person who is recovering from child abuse except for those who are currently perpetrating abuse on others (See note 6 below.). \nOur Meetings are classified as Open drop-in. This means that a newcomer to the ASCA meeting is always welcomed into the group. Participants come when they want. There is no set commitment to attending ASCA meetings and no requirement to participate. If you like\, you can just get comfortable in your chair and watch. \nTo ensure cooperation and safety in our meeting\, we observe the following guidelines: \nPlease arrive on time and remain until the conclusion of the meeting. Latecomers will be asked to wait outside so that speakers who are sharing are not interrupted. There are two opportunities for entry – 1) just prior to the main presenter about 10 minutes into the meeting\, and 2) just prior to the share period approximately 35 minutes into the meeting. No one will be allowed in after this last time.\nASCA meetings are exclusively for survivors of physical\, sexual\, or emotional childhood abuse. \nThis is an anonymous meeting. Only first names are used.\nWhat you hear today is told in confidence and should not be repeated outside this meeting. \nWe ask that no one attend our meeting under the influence of alcohol or drugs\, unless the medication is prescribed by a physician. \nASCA meetings are not intended for survivors who are currently perpetrating abuse on others. Talking about past or present perpetrator type behavior is not permissible. \nLanguage that is considered derogatory concerning race\, gender\, ethnicity\, religion\, sexual orientation or other minority status is unacceptable in our meeting. \nBy participating in this meeting we all agree to abide by the spirit of ASCA\, our guidelines and any interventions by the Co-Secretaries. \nFor more info\, visit the ASCA New York web site:\nhttp://sites.google.com/site/ascanewyork/

SUMMARY:Chakra Balancing Meditation
DESCRIPTION:As a group\, we tone the sacred sounds of each chakra 7 times\, creating an energetic flow that loosens and removes blockages and releases negative energy stored within. The sound of the toning creates a vibrational reaction within the body\, which causes stillness and relaxation. We begin with a breathing exercise\, followed by toning\, and ending with an open circle to share the experience and/or ask questions. This is a meditation\, and a self-healing practice. Chakra balancing meditation is excellent for the beginner and the experienced.  \n We all have seven main chakras that sit along the center of the spinal column. The body is a vehicle of consciousness\, and the chakras are where consciousness and matter (the physical body) meet. Together the seven chakras form a profound formula for wholeness that integrates mind\, body and spirit. Making sure they are balanced is essential to our daily and long term lives. They house the consciousness around our survival and safety\, emotions\, sexulaity\, creativity\, self-esteem\, imagination\, our knowingness\, our ability to love and be loved. Emotions such as fear\, stress\, shame\, guilt\, grief\, lies and the ego all block the chakras creating an imbalanced system. Having an imbalanced chakra system can result in physical symptoms in their corresponding body parts and organs.  \nRSVP by email \nJoshua Dorfman is a metaphysical teacher and healer who uses his clairvoyant and empathic abilities to support others looking for more balance and deep spiritual healing. Born extrasensory\, he always had a gift enabling him to know things beyond the physical\, like feeling the energy of a person\, or situation\, knowing people’s true intentions and when something bad was going to happen. As he grew\, he came across various mentors who passed onto him\, great spiritual wisdom. For many years\, Joshua has been self taught\, guided by an “inner voice” toward books and information around the subject of energy healing\, psychic ability and the power of sound\, to name a few. READ MORE >>

SUMMARY:Sufi Dance Class with Läle Sayoko
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient practice of meditative whirling known as Sufi dance or Sema (Sama in Iranian). You will learn the techniques of whirling\, but Sema is not about reproducing a certain form or aesthetic. Rather\, the technique serves as a vehicle for inner journeying. Sema means spiritual listening. Together we’ll create a sacred space in which we can safely listen to and share our true selves and experience oneness with the Divine. \nEach class consists of some explanation of the theory and technique\, exercises\, practice whirling\, and sharing and discussion of what you experienced and felt. \nPlease wear comfortable clothing like yoga pants or leggings and T shirts ( no tube top or short pants) and solid colors are recommended\, avoiding prints and shiny material which might distract the eye while whirling\, and wear socks or soft soled shoes. If you have a whirling skirt\, please feel free to bring it. \nAvoid eating a large meal for two hours prior to class. \nWhirling commonly induces dizziness or nausea. Over time\, through whirling\, we learn to trust ourselves to go off balance\, to be dizzy\, to surrender control. We empty our minds of all thoughts of the individual self as we give ourselves over to prayer and connect with a greater power\, the still center within\, around which we turn. Into this emptiness floods a divine fullness\, which sometimes gives rise to a state known as “mystical intoxication\,” a reflection of knowing and experiencing that you and I and the Divine are One. \nClasses are $25 ($20 with advanced registration). \nAbout Sufi Dance Instructor Läle Sayoko \nSufi Dance Instructor Läle Sayoko lives to embody and transmit the voice of spirit through music and dance. As CRS resident Sufi Dance instructor\, choreographer\, performing artist\, and musical curator\, she loves to welcome people into this holy practice to explore and share their own divinity. After a long professional dance career\, she retired to support her young daughter through a life-threatening medical crisis. Several years later she discovered that she could whirl as a form of prayer to support her daughter and began studying Sufi Dance with Paris-based Sufi Artist Rana Gorgani. In April 2018 Gorgani awarded her the International Sufi Dance Certification Of Cid UNESCO\, granting her authority to teach Gorgani’s method of Sufi Dance training. She currently teaches Sufi Dance classes at CRS every first Thursday of the month from 7 – 8:30 pm and leads the CRS Healing Circles + Whirling Prayer that take place every third Thursday of the month from 7:15 – 9 pm.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/lale.sayoko \n

SUMMARY:Vibration: SAORI KANDA Art Performance with LÄLE SAYOKO
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents VIBRATION: SAORI KANDA art performance with Sufi Dance artist LÄLE SAYOKO on Friday\, Dec 6 2019 from 7 – 9 pm. VIBRATION brings together two internationally touring artists known for improvisationally translating music into visual art and movement. In conjunction with the live performance\, an exhibition of Kanda’s paintings will be on view in the CRS lobby. \nPainting with bare hands\, brushes\, sometimes throwing paint\, 2019 Independent Tokyo Contemporary Art Fair Audience Award Winner SAORI KANDA brings to life delicious large-scale scenes of nature and fantasy inspired by her love of Japanese art (both traditional and modern) as well as the flowing Arabesques to which she was exposed growing up in the Middle East. While SAORI paints\, LÄLE SAYOKO\, in a free-spirited approach to the Sufi practice known as sema (spiritual listening)\, follows the music’s vibrations to unfold the ever-flowing movements of nature\, such as the opening and closing of a flower dancing in the wind (lâle means tulip in Turkish). \nTickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and are available online and at CRS. Students and seniors are $20. A limited number of free tickets for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult are available online. \nThis event is supported by the GLOBUS RYOKAN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE program and is one of a series of events in early December featuring Saori Kanda across the city. \nThe Globus Ryokan Artist-in-Residence program seeks to stimulate cross-cultural dialogue by providing opportunities for Japanese artists to live and exhibit in New York City. The GLOBUS FAMILY has long been associated with cultural interchange between Japan and United States. They have sponsored events at eminent institutions including Japan Society and Asia Society. Their scope spans dance\, theater\, cinema\, art\, craft\, and performance groups. It is reminiscent of the style of abstract expressionism such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. She breathes a life into the canvas. Her work grows and become filled with freewheeling spirits by experiencing the cycle of destruction and rebirth. She\, as a painter\, becomes a part of her own work and her outstanding performance attracts offers from all over the world.\nsaorian.com/ \nSaori Kanda’s work and performance will also be presented in: \nTOKYO EMERGENCE:  an exhibition of 10 artists from Japan presented by Tagboat\nOpening Reception:  Tuesday\, December 3 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm\nOpening Art Performance by SAORI KANDA with SIVA:  Tuesday\, December 3 from 7:30 – 8 pm\nVenue:  WhiteBox\, 213 E 121st St\, New York\, NY 10035\ntagboat.com/store/about/en/ \nABOUT SUFI DANCE ARTIST LÄLE SAYOKO \nLäle Sayoko lives to embody and transmit the voice of spirit through music and dance. She intermittently tours internationally with BELLA GAIA\, a live concert blending music\, dance\, technology\, and NASA satellite imagery inspired by the experience of astronauts viewing the earth from space. “Sublime” — Village Voice. \nOne of the founding members of Japan’s famous SAMANYOLU professional belly dance group in Tokyo\, Läle went on to a long solo career performing throughout the northeastern USA and touring with United Kingdom’s Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers on over a 100 city tour encompassing the U.K.\, as well as Turkey’s Baba Zula. Or to draw staking her life. \nYou may take her words however you can. \nTo draw. \nFor her\, it is not just to create artworks but it is to record her encounters and her growth. What you see in her work always is a festival of lines and colors that breathes heavily holding enthusiasm within. It is like a flower\, like a body\, or like a landscape of an unknown country. \nWho is Saori Kanda that creates this? \nHaving spent her childhood in Baghdad and Dubai\, she says she always had a longing for Japan\, a far country from where she was. Certainly\, in her work\, it seems that influences from Arabic world and elements of Japanese roots are inseparably interwoven in her depiction of human body\, detailed patterns\, and the curves of her flowing brushstrokes. \nShe does live with unbridled enthusiasm. She draws\, longs for encounters with people and places\, travels\, talks\, listens\, gets worried\, breaks\, laughs\, creates\, sheds tears\, lives\, communicates\, and again\, draws. With all her strength and all her heart. \nIt does not matter if it is a live painting performance\, a creation of tableau\, or a collaboration with other fields such as music\, fashion\, and so on. She does what she does. \nShe jumps into the encounter throughout her body\, communes with it\, and devotes herself to it. Then\, she lets her brushes run. \nThe ‘heat’ that is boiling in all Saori Kanda’s work is the ‘heat’ liberated in a chemical reaction of the encounters with people\, things\, and places throughout her life. \nLIFE PAINT.
