There will be an Opening Reception with the artist on March 10 from 6 – 8 pm. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nWe think of our bodies as solid\, enclosed\, finite\, self sufficient\, contained. But we share many things\, visible and not\, with the world around us. We share energy of all kinds with other beings\, plants\, machines\, nature and the cosmos. We take for granted our life partner — our physical being — who makes life possible and carries us through this world for decades and sometimes for a century. We move not through the world but as part of it\, sharing breath\, resources\, spirit and life energy. \nMy artwork is grounded in the body\, the kinesthetic: movement\, music\, and dance — and in the body’s subtle forces — emotional\, spiritual and healing energies. The quest for the underlying energy source runs through all of my work — like the Sufis I find no separation between the divine and the body. And why is this work be important? We live in a time of much anger and violence\, and communication is often disembodied. The disconnect between ourselves and the natural world is causing serious problems. We need to come home to our bodies\, our animal-ness\, our human-ness\, our body-temples. \nMy artistic practice covers a vast range of work\, mainly painting and drawing\, but also community environmental art and collaboration. The art includes landscapes painted all over the world\, and a few large series of works grounded in the body: 200 large watercolors of traditional and new deities (I teach a workshop on making your own deities)\, wild women\, dancers and now art about the body’s energy. I have enjoyed collaborations with dancers\, scientists\, movement teachers\, and writers. She began her piano study by the age of three. During her childhood\, she spent most of the time playing her piano by improvising and composing. Her favorite thing was to reflect the energy around her (energy of her home\, family\, people who visited her) on her improvisation and she would improvise endlessly without knowing it was a very special talent she was given. As her piano study became more serious\, she stopped playing freely but started to focus on “what others would think is good” by following her piano teachers’ advise. At 19 years old\, she felt extremely detached from music and struggled. \nThen\, she decided to study jazz piano. At 20 years old\, she met her piano teacher\, Takeshi\, who told her\, “Listen to the music inside of you first\, and strike the keys to play the melody you just heard.” He taught the importance of being authentic in the music and following where the music wants to go instead of thinking what to play. In order to fully understand his words and also master this\, Kana started to record herself at every single opportunity (practicing\, rehearsal\, performances)\, listening to the recordings\, and taking notes on what she was feeling/thinking when she played and how it affected her music. After years of doing this practice\, she has concluded that when ego takes over\, the music loses its life; when she listens to the spirit and plays music with it\, the music spreads love and she is able to connect with others. This has become her philosophy as a musician. \nAt age 25\, she was awarded a Berklee World Scholarship and moved to Boston to further study piano performance and music therapy. There\, her approach was validated when\, as a music therapy student\, she began working with individuals with disabilities. She cultivated her clinical skills based on her philosophy and was recognized by Berklee College of Music for demonstrating extraordinary therapeutic musical skills. As a result\, she received numerous awards\, and afterward was hired by Berklee to help develop their “Clinical Music Improvisation” curriculum. \nAs a licensed clinician\, she has worked with diverse populations including children with special needs and has developed her own method that has been proven to be effective for children with autism spectrum disorder. While she works as an active music therapist\, she also composes and performs with her husband as an acoustic duo unit called Yagull. The past few years\, Kana started to study A Course in Miracles (ACIM) with Yasuko Kasaki and Naoko Ono. The typically blueish mist suggests the gently flowing waves of a tranquil sea\, and yet the vastness of the mountain ranges also imparts a sense of magnificent solidity. Holding this image and these feelings in their mind\, the performers will seek to transmit them in some way to the audience through six sections of about 10 minutes each: Solo 1 – Solo 2 – Duo – Trio – Quartet – CODA. \nThe concert will take place at CRS on Sunday\, April 22\, 2018 at 7 pm. She subsequently grew up in France\, where she still lives today. \nFascinated from an early age by the Persian culture\, Rana was fortunate to grow up in a family very present in the Arts where music and poetry were a constant fixture in her household. \nWhile traveling in Iran\, she was introduced to the Daf instrument\, a large Persian frame drum\, and pursued learning this sacred percussion for the Kurdish Sufi rituals. \nInstinctively\, she became familiar with this spirituality that sounded like an inspiration and reflection of her artistic work. She began her piano study by the age of three. During her childhood\, she spent most of the time playing her piano by improvising and composing. Her favorite thing was to reflect the energy around her (energy of her home\, family\, people who visited her) on her improvisation and she would improvise endlessly without knowing it was a very special talent she was given. As her piano study became more serious\, she stopped playing freely but started to focus on “what others would think is good” by following her piano teachers’ advise. At 19 years old\, she felt extremely detached from music and struggled. \nThen\, she decided to study jazz piano. At 20 years old\, she met her piano teacher\, Takeshi\, who told her\, “Listen to the music inside of you first\, and strike the keys to play the melody you just heard.” He taught the importance of being authentic in the music and following where the music wants to go instead of thinking what to play. In order to fully understand his words and also master this\, Kana started to record herself at every single opportunity (practicing\, rehearsal\, performances)\, listening to the recordings\, and taking notes on what she was feeling/thinking when she played and how it affected her music. After years of doing this practice\, she has concluded that when ego takes over\, the music loses its life; when she listens to the spirit and plays music with it\, the music spreads love and she is able to connect with others. This has become her philosophy as a musician. \nAt age 25\, she was awarded a Berklee World Scholarship and moved to Boston to further study piano performance and music therapy. There\, her approach was validated when\, as a music therapy student\, she began working with individuals with disabilities. She cultivated her clinical skills based on her philosophy and was recognized by Berklee College of Music for demonstrating extraordinary therapeutic musical skills. As a result\, she received numerous awards\, and afterward was hired by Berklee to help develop their “Clinical Music Improvisation” curriculum. \nAs a licensed clinician\, she has worked with diverse populations including children with special needs and has developed her own method that has been proven to be effective for children with autism spectrum disorder. While she works as an active music therapist\, she also composes and performs with her husband as an acoustic duo unit called Yagull. The past few years\, Kana started to study A Course in Miracles (ACIM) with Yasuko Kasaki and Naoko Ono. Fiore showed at the East Village’s KOAP gallery in the early 90’s and in 1995 directed the underground documentary Trip and Go Naked\, winner of the Excellence in Sexual Theater award at Arlene’s Grocery Picture Show. He went on to direct the feature documentary Backstage for Miramax\, a behind the scenes look at Jay Z’s Hard Knock Life Tour. With roots in the principles of Zen Buddhism and in spiritual practice\, these traditional Japanese instruments share an underlying aesthetic concept:  the discovery of the world that lies within one note\, one sound. This concert program includes both traditional works and new compositions such as Elizabeth Brown’s 秋廻り来て “autumn comes round again”\, which sets tanka poetry written by survivors of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. \nTickets are $20 through 9/30\, $25 thereafter\, and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621)\, and at the door. \nIdeally\, this music is heard in a tranquil setting conducive to calm\, focused listening. The ichigenkin’s philosophy of “one string” is a natural partner to the “one note” aesthetic of the shakuhachi\, and while the shakuhachi is becoming more familiar to audiences around the world\, opportunities to hear the ichigenkin are truly rare. Largely through the efforts of Minegishi Issui\, the ichigenkin is gradually finding a new place in contemporary Japan and abroad. This trio of musicians\, two from America and one from Japan\, presents numerous concerts in Japan. Now they are bringing knowledge of these beautiful instruments and their music to an American audience. \nThis concert is part of a 12-stop U.S. tour. She was trained by her great-grandmother\, the 3rd heiress\, an officially designated Intangible Cultural Treasure of Japan. Minegishi Issui succeeded to the title of 4th Iemoto in 1988\, and was honored as Graduate of the NHK Conservatory of Japanese Traditional Music. She has performed around the world. At her 2008 Kioi Hall concert in Japan\, she was honored with the presence of Her Majesty the Empress of Japan\, Michiko. Minegishi Issui won the bronze prize in the division “1-2 string musical instruments” at Delphic 2009 (The Art and Cultural Olympic Games) in Jeju\, Korea. She received Asian Cultural Council grants in 2010 and in 2013. \nRalph Samuelson\, a performer and teacher of the Japanese bamboo flute\, shakuhachi\, was trained in the classical tradition of the Kinko School of shakuhachi by the late Living National Treasure Goro Yamaguchi as well as by Shudo Yamato and Kodo Araki V\, both in Japan and in the graduate world music program at Wesleyan University.
