DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next Healing Circle and spirit journey! \nLet’s begin 2017 with a clear sense of purpose. We’ll journey with our power animals to receive guidance about how best to use our creative energy in the coming year and commit ourselves to remembering and following through. \nJoining us this month will be spiritual teacher Joshua Dorfman\, who will lead us in vocally toning the sacred sounds of each chakra\, creating an energetic flow that loosens and removes blockages and releases negative energy stored within. The sound of the toning creates a vibrational reaction within the body\, which causes stillness and relaxation and helps us to share our beautiful clear energy with one another in a joyful way. Joshua leads chakra toning meditations at CRS on Wednesday nights from 7 – 8 pm. \nWalk-ins are welcome as long as there is room but if you know you will be coming\, please sign up in advance — and perhaps bring something fresh and yummy to share to celebrate the fall harvest! Registration is $20 through Jan 5 and $25 on Jan 6. \nYou might want to bring pen and paper for taking notes. No previous experience is required and the circles are open. Since then\, so many of you have supported their family with prayer and volunteer assistance. Today\, she is seizure free. She is active and growing\, and her tumor is at least at bay. Tomorrow\, we celebrate her fifth birthday. That in itself is a miracle. But many of you and us and friends around the world who have been praying for her have also experienced many miracles as we have learned to let go of our fears and discover our own limitlessness. It is this joining together to share miracle mindedness that we want to celebrate today. \nGamyousei is a close friend and mentor of Yasuko Kasaki who has generously offered to join us from Japan for this occasion in order to share his experience of synchronicity and miracles. He began his professional life as an architect and met with much success. Through his work he developed relationships with many kinds of people and\, inspired by his personal study of Buddhist meditation and principles\, began to focus on helping others to accelerate their own careers and enjoy their lives. We are honored to have him with us! \nCalling us in with their meditative music will be artist and drummer Eric Holzman\, sound healer Senko Nishimura\, and didgeridoo player and healer Evan Worldwind\, each active contributors to the CRS community. Eric’s beautiful oil paintings will be on exhibit in the CRS lobby from December 1\, 2016 – January 31\, 2017.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:  Out of Mind — Paintings by Eric Holzman
DESCRIPTION:CRS announces Out of Mind\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Eric Holzman. The exhibition will be on view from December 1\, 2016 – January 31\, 2017. We invite you to meet the artist at the CRS Holiday Party on Saturday\, December 10 from 4 – 8 pm. \nEric has been a professional painter and art teacher since the 1970s. This is his second solo exhibition at CRS\, his first coming in 2006. He is also now a student of A Course in Miracles and regularly drums for the monthly Healing Circles at CRS. We are pleased to be able to share his creative spirit with the CRS community more and more. \nEric Holzman always begins painting from life but brings the work back into the studio\, accumulating density of paint\, depth\, presence\, returning to many of the canvases again and again over a period of years. His landscapes share an atmospheric space that is deep\, suggestive\, sensual\, and in tension with the surface\, employing a relatively three-dimensional rendering of form in space\, relative to most modernism. Often\, the bottoms of the canvases support a lot of weight. The landscapes evoke a moment of in time\, when the play of light on leaf is just so\, and yet their weightiness imparts a sense of the ancient or timeless\, echoing T.S. Eliot: \nTime past and time future\n Allow but a little consciousness.\n To be conscious is not to be in time\n But only in time can the moment in the rose-garden\,\n The moment in the arbour where the rain beat\,\n The moment in the draughty church at smokefall\n Be remembered; involved with past and future.\n Only through time time is conquered.\n— section two\, stanza three of “Burnt Norton” from Four Quartets \nThe human figures in his landscapes are both obscured and revealed\, allowing the viewer a sense of intimacy with the subjects without sacrificing their dignity. They quietly assert themselves into the present of the landscape\, their material ethereality encoding a more substantive timeless spiritual presence. As with a portrait\, his subjects are usually placed toward the center of the canvas\, so the pictures are simply conceived\, but full of movement. While remaining grounded in perception\, Holzman takes perceptual liberties with color and design\, inspired by eastern art and its inference of the presence of the gods\, or of the sacred or the eternal. One could say he stretches pictorial representation\, in order to express the mysterious snap of each successive moment as the miracle of existence is revealed. \n“For Mr. Holzman\, making art is an endeavor through which intimacy and longing achieve a finely tuned\, if tenuous\, resolution.” — Mario Naves\, The New York Observer \nA graduate of Tyler School of Art (BFA ’71) and Yale University (MFA ’73)\, Holzman has since participated in numerous solo and curated group exhibitions at galleries in New York\, Houston\, Boston\, Antwerp\, and elsewhere. He is a past recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as grants from the Tiffany Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and Studio Space\, P.S. 1. Holzman has taught at Bard College\, Pratt Institute\, Chicago Art Institute\, Penn University\, Boston University\, The Studio School\, and others. \nArtist Statement \nWorking from life excited me as a student\, and it still is exciting. Still\, a painting that was begun from nature may become entirely different as it subsequently evolves in the studio. Some times they come quick without too much reworking\, and sometimes a small painting will take years to find itself\, submitting themselves to tweaking\, adjusting\, scraping\, sanding\, glazing and scumbling and any thing else that occures to me. \nI am after a kind of painting that can be enjoyed experientially; by-passing the mind\, felt in the body the heart and the soul\, like a song that feels just right\, like it has always existed. In a totally contemporary way\, I am after a slow\, sensual richness\, much more common before the modern era. \nPainting outside in nature opened doors for me. I consciously saw and I felt the vibration of energy surrounding and flowing through the trees. This was an important revelation\, which I have tried to let guide my work and my life\, as it led to a deeper knowing on a spiritual level. \nWhen I drew as a child\, the empty page was a place that I could pour myself into\, an escape. Later it became is a place to connect my inner world and outer world; sight and feeling\, memory and dream \, observation and thought. \nI love many kinds of painting from different places and times. I have no desire to disturb what was\, I want to add. Come and experience the sounds of koto and shamisen and enjoy the taste of the four seasons here in New York. This concert series will feature each season’s representative traditional works along with the colorful and delicate Japanese style confectionaries. Subsequent concerts in the series will be held on Jan 28\, April 22 and July 15 at 4 pm. \n \nEach season is expressed through ingredients. Spring traditionally begins with sakura (cherry blossoms)\, broccoli rabe\, strawberries and raspberries\, followed by elderflower\, rose\, edamame and sansho (Japanese pepper) in summer. As autumn approaches we’ll pick chrysanthemum\, apples\, grapes\, chestnuts and hazelnuts; and yuzu and kumquats in winter…. Yoko has won numerous awards including the First Prize at the prestigious 10th Kenjun Memorial National Koto Competition as the first Yamada style koto performer. She received the First Prize at the 4th Great Wall International Music Competition and the Osaka Chinese Counsel Award and won the Japanese music audition for NHK-FM radio and her solo shamisen performance was broadcasted nationally. Since then she has performed numerous koto and shamisen pieces for the radio and regularly toured internationally. \nSince Yoko moved to the US in 2010\, her mission has been to promote Japanese music to American audiences. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next Healing Circle and spirit journey! This is a time of balancing of masculine and feminine energies and of head and heart.  As the harvest draws to a close\, let’s reflect on how we’ve grown during the preceding year. We’ll journey again to the lower realm and this time seek the guidance from the Heart of the Earth itself about how to retrieve and re-integrate any masculine or feminine energies we may have set aside for safe keeping during our growing process. \nWe’ll finish with a glass of wine and whatever munchies YOU bring to share — social time! \nWalk-ins are welcome as long as there is room but if you know you will be coming\, please sign up in advance — and perhaps bring something fresh and yummy to share to celebrate the fall harvest! Registration is $20. \nYou might want to bring pen and paper for taking notes. No previous experience is required and the circles are open. She started weaving when she was 57 years old and created her own easy-to-use-immediately loom and style\, free from the traditional concept and rules of weaving. She named her weaving style ‘SAORI’ and because the loom is so easy to use\, it allows anyone to express his or her self freely regardless of age\, gender\, disability or intellectual aptitude. In Zen vocabulary\, SAORI is the combination of the words SA\, meaning everything has its own individual dignity\, and ORI\, meaning weaving. \n“In SAORI\, we try not to imitate machine-made products\, and we always try to do what only human beings can do. No two weavings are alike\, and it is very natural that every single cloth freely woven by people with different personalities is beautiful in a different way. The irregular selvage and accidental skip of thread add the unprogrammed beauty to the SAORI cloths; and we admire this irregularity as ‘the beauty with lack of intentions’ created by our natural creativity.”\n— loopoftheloom.com \nSince 2004 Nobu has been active in the NYC SAORI community and and at the studio\, Loop of the Loom\, under the direction of Yukako Satone. She is a SAORI certified instructor and SAORI healing artist. During this time she has learned to use SAORI as a meditative practice to observe her inner mental and emotional state. Her commitment to the practice has freed her to allow her deepest impulses to intuitively guide her selection and manipulation of the threads. \nWhile SAORI celebrates beauty in the imperfect\, a characteristic commonly found in Japanese traditional aesthetics\, SAORI works and Nobu’s work in particular embrace improvisation and veer so far in their wildness and irregularity from traditional woven fabrics and garments that western viewers may be more inclined to place them in the abstract expressionist tradition. Rebellious and highly idiosyncratic\, Nobu’s creations burst with energy\, not an easy effect for yarn to achieve. Is the yarn imbued by Nobu with energy or is the energy already inherent within — SA\, individual dignity — simply being made palpable? Nobu’s works raise many questions without offering definitive answers or explicit meanings. They invite the viewer to feel rather than think and allow her feelings to give rise to authentic creative impulses of her own. By encouraging viewers to accept and express their own inspirations\, Nobu’s work celebrates a way of living with constant transformation of our idea of who we are\, free of self-definition and self-limitation. \nABOUT NOBU \nNobu was born in Kamakura City and lived right in front of Kanagawa Modern Museum. During her elementary school years\, she loved to visit the museum and even explored neighborhood galleries on her own. After winning an international student art competition and showing great promise\, her mother offered to send her to art school\, but Nobu instead chose to study economics at Rikkyo University. \nFor eight years after college\, Nobu worked in the fashion industry and after moving to New York with her husband\, himself a talented interior architectural designer\, she planned to open a wedding design business\, but the birth of her son led her to change directions once again. When her son turned five\, they attended a SAORI weaving workshop at CRS\, sparking her interest in fiber arts. A reunion last year with her school friend\, Yoh\, whom she found had begun painting again\, inspired her to throw herself back into it. The teacher uses a combination of pleasant\, purposeful movement and guided attention to lead you through a particular pattern of movement and action. She was a founding faculty member at The Studio New York and has been a guest teacher at Mark Morris Dance School\,The New School and The Feldenkrais Institute in New York. \nSita began her movement training early\, studying Yoga and Tae Kwon Do as a child.She later studied Classical Ballet and Musical Theater Dance forms in Bombay and started her professional career on stage. She was  Principal Dancer  and Choreographer’s Assistant in The Shiamak Davar Dance Company in India from 1997-1990\,primarily doing Musical Theatre \, Music Videos and Teaching Dance. \nIn 1992 she completed The Certificate Program at the Alvin Ailey School in New York and spent ten years working with Dance and Physical Theater companies in New York\, as well as with independent choreographers from India\, Europe\, South America\, and the United States. She studied Acting at The Michael Howard Studio in New York and took up long term studies in new movement modalities\, interning for several years with Fay Simpson in Lucid Body Work and in Alexander Technique with Jean McClelland. Sita is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and a Licensed Massage Therapist. Her unique\, eclectic background has lead her to develop her own form of movement training\, which works towards giving performers a more refined self awareness\, physical awareness and visceral authenticity. Sita has worked at all levels of training\, ranging from the Yale School of Drama to kindergartens in the slums of Mumbai.

The title is “The Miracle of the Gifted Quarter – Life’s Truth revealed”\, which contains many scenes in which Katsuko Yamamoto\, a teacher at a special-needs school\, communicates with students. \nWithin two years after the completion of the film\, it spread abroad with English subtitles. And a hundred and twenty thousands people watched it by the end of 2011. SUMMARY:Exhibition —  The Art of A Good Life in Hell by Ai Tatebayashi
DESCRIPTION:CRS announces Light in Darkness\, an exhibition of original art (watercolor\, ink\, gouache\, and graphite on paper) from the illustrated book A Good Life in Hell by Ai Tatebayashi. A Good Life in Hell is an illustrated book that tells the life stories of Sumiteru Taniguchi\, a Nagasaki atomic bomb survivor (hibakusha in Japanese)\, and his wife Eiko. Their shared history offers both a stark look at the horrific legacy of nuclear weapons\, as well as a tale of inspiration for all those facing challenges as they pursue meaning and happiness in their own lives. \nThe exhibition will be on view from August 4 – October 4\, 2016. An Opening Reception with the artist with live reading of the book will be held on Saturday\, August 13\, 2016 from 4 – 6 pm. \nA Good Life in Hell contains important lessons about the past\, but it is even more about living in the present. Exploring daily rituals in the Taniguchi home as Sumiteru and Eiko enter their 80s\, a reader must reflect on how today’s decisions can affect our collective and personal futures—for better or for worse. \nARTIST AND INSPIRATION \nAi Tatebayashi\, the artist and author of A Good Life in Hell\, first learned about Sumiteru Taniguchi from a Japanese TV show. She quickly realized that most people\, especially younger Japanese adults like her\, knew nothing of the everyday suffering of atomic bomb survivors. \nSumiteru’s words drove her to initiate this project: \n“I am not afraid of death. But I am afraid of oblivion. Oblivion of the fear of the atomic bomb.” \nAi met with Sumiteru Taniguchi and his wife Eiko several times\, both in New York and in Nagasaki. She recorded stories of their past and observed their daily life. \nCreating striking original illustrations—some luminous and beautiful\, others dark and bleak—Ai depicted scenes inspired by the couple’s long journey together with richness and depth. After working at an advertising agency in Japan\, I came to New York City for an intensive study of illustration. At the School of Visual Arts\, I developed my linear drawing style and sense of color. People’s feelings or characters are important for my work. I love observing people and drawing them with my unique view and sense of humor. In Japan\, my major  was French literature in Rikkyo university. I still love to read. The songs that they will be playing are all originals. \n“Blessed with a pure\, crystalline mountain lake voice\, Hiromi Suda combines the classical qualities of intricate phrasing\, and attention to emphasis and timing with a melodic and harmonic complexity that reminds of bossa nova.” \n\n\n\nAbout Romi & Soli \nSoli (vocal\, guitar) is a singer–song–writer/producer from Bahia\, Brazil. He sings lyrics in both Portuguese and English on top of his guitar accompaniment\, combining different rhythm patterns from Brazil including Baião. He loves to freely fuse many styles of music for lifting up the spirits. \n*Baião is a traditional style of music in north-east Brazil. \nRomi (keyboard) is a pianist/composer from Japan. She’s performed in Japan and the US with various ensembles. She has also worked as producer/engineer in the music/recording industry. She holds a BA in Piano from Kunitachi College of Music and a MA in music composition from Queens College. \nAbout Hiromi Suda \nVocalist/composer Hiromi Suda won the World Scholarship and entered Berklee College of Music in 2005. There\, Ms. Suda studied with many world renowned musicians including Jazz vocals with Ms. Lisa Thorson\, Latin American music with Ms. Mili Bermejo and Brazilian music styles with Fernando Brandao. \nBy 2007\, Hiromi had developed a keen interest in Brazilian music and during the summer of 2007 she spent three months in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil further honing her skill with Brazilian music styles and instruments\, such as the pandeiro. Her experience in Brazil was highly rewarding not only musically\, but also gave a historical and cultural context to her passion for Brazilian music.  During this period\, Ms. Suda attended the Choro School called Escola Portatil de Musica. She studied the pandeiro with Celsinho Silva and Jorginho Silva and choro vocal style with the choro singer\, Amelia Rabello and MPB vocal style with the Brazilian vocalist Suely Mesuqita. \nIn the ensuing years\, Hiromi Suda has magnificently woven her  knowledge of Brazilian music to produce a singular and innovative sound recognized by critics as a serious contribution in vocal style and technique.  Ms. Suda performed with the choro group Choro Democratico and the great flute player\, Fernando Brandao\, including concerts at the Brazilian 13th Independence Day Festival\, Ryles Jazz Club\, University of Massachusetts\, among others. She performed with Clarice Assad group in NY including the concert at The stone. She also leads concerts with her own band in New York such as Blue note NY\, Zinc bar\, Cornelia street cafe and among others\, the Kennedy center in Washington DC(Iberian music festival) and New England and Japan. \nShe released her debut album in 2008\, which received many accolades and prompted a tour with world famous percussionist\, Keita Ogawa. The album is receiving great radio support worldwide\, including featured performances for several radios in Japan. \nIn January 2012 she recorded her sophomore album\, ‘Sou’ produced by the great Brazilian guitarist\, Romero Lubambo and recorded at the famed Avatar studio in NY. The band members are Anne Drummond(Flute)\, Julian Shore(Piano)\, Keita Ogawa(Percussions/Drums)\,Yasushi Nakamura(Bass). “Sou” was released in August 2012 from Happiness Records. She did CD release tour in Japan(Tokyo\, Yokohama\, Osaka\, Nagoya\, Hitachi\, Mito and Kofu). Shiraishi\, currently on a US tour\, will create a mixture of conventional and modern calligraphy accompanied by Jay Anderson (bass)\, Scott Robinson (sax)\, Gary Versace (accordion). \nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are available online\, by phone 212-677-8621 and at CRS. \nCalligrapher Setsuhi Shiraishi specializes in shodo\, a form of Japanese calligraphy and is famous for creating large-scale works in a performance setting. Having been interested in calligraphy during her childhood\, Shiraishi became a calligraphy master at 22 years old. She is pursuing her own unique style of calligraphy while expressing the world of traditional calligraphy. She has toured widely in Europe and Asia and recently in the United States\, attracting many fans from around the world through her live collaborative performances with music. \nSetsuhi has given calligraphy performances at various places including the private salon Diners Club Ginza Lounge in Tokyo\, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Tokyo (at the 60th anniversary event of the launch of Fissler’s pressure cookers)\, and the British Museum in London. She also held a joint performance with the London Improvisers Orchestra\, participated in an art fair in Paris\, and held personal exhibitions in both Paris and New York. Also in New York\, Setsuhi conducted a calligraphy workshop and performed in both a jazz club and an art gallery with Jay Anderson and Frank Kimbrough of the Maria Schneider Orchestra as well as jazz horn player Adam Unsworth. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, Setsuhi calligraphed the title on a CD cover for Jiang Xiao-Qing\, a world-famous player of the traditional Chinese “guzheng” string instrument. \nSetsuhi collaborates with accessory designer RYONA to create 縁 (“en”)\, their unique brand of calligraphic accessories. On these and other instruments including theremin and ophicleide\, he has been heard with a cross-section of jazz’s greats representing nearly every imaginable style of the music\, from Braff to Braxton. Primarily a tenor saxophonist\, Scott placed directly below the great Sonny Rollins in this year’s DownBeat Readers Poll. Scott has been heard numerous times on film\, radio and television\, and his discography now includes more than 240 recordings. The exhibition opens on June 5 and will remain on view through August 3\, 2016. \nKazoo has been traveling all over the world to see different cultures and how people live. He found that everywhere\, regardless of culture or language\, that people who live by the water are the SAME! They enjoy sun and water\, eating good fish\, sharing the good smile that water people carry! \nKazoo was born in Japan and grew up learning calligraphy from his grandfather. Born in the astrological sign of Cancer (one of the water signs)\, he always felt drawn to rivers and the sea. When he saw his first ocean wave\, he fell in love with the water’s movement and constant changes of color. He began printmaking in New York City in 2004 and found a connection between the ocean and printing. SUMMARY:Butoh Workshop with Gio Kusanagi
DESCRIPTION:CRS presents an 8-week drop-in Butoh workshop with visiting artist Gio Kusanagi. Gio Kusanagi studied Butoh (Japanese avant-garde dance) with Moe Yamamoto\, Toru Iwashita\, Kunisuke Kamiryo\, Yoshito Ohno (son of Kazuo Ohno)\, Yukio Waguri\, Seisaku & Yuri\, Ko Muroboshi\, and Kayo Mikami and a Butoh-inspired interpretive dance with Akira Kasai. \nCRS has a long history of presenting Butoh performance and training. Butoh artists to teach at CRS in the past include Shinichi Momo Koga\, Tanya Calamoneri\, and Mariko Endo\, among others. \nThe workshop will take place on Mondays from 1 – 2 pm from April 4 – May 23\, 2016 and will cost $15/session. In conjunction with the workshop\, Gio will present an evening of original dance performance with live music at CRS on Saturday\, March 26\, 2016 at 8 pm. \nIn this workshop\, Gio will introduce \n\nKunisuke Kamiryo’s system of instilling the movement impetus within the body by using the sound of vowels\, along with Akira Kasai’s spoken words visualization system;\nYuri’s warming-up system of movements\, along with basic Butoh walking taught by both Moe Yamamoto\, Kayo Mikami\, and Yoshito Ohno;\nconcepts of “Shin (core)\,” “softness and hardiness\,” “lightness and heaviness\,” “eyes at the back\,” and “movements from the heart\,” taught by Yoshito Ohno;\nSelection of Butoh-fu with the active use of images that Gio learned from Yukio Waguri\, Moe Yamamoto\, and Seisaku\, as he reorganizes the various Buto-fu through the Rudolf Laban’s four dimensions of efforts: (a) weight (light and heavy); (b) time (sudden and sustained); (c) space (direct focus and multifocus); (d) flow (bound flow and free flow).  Furthermore\, Gio will introduce a technique to create a new Buto-fu on your own by translating a 2D image into 4D time-space-continuum.\n\nThe workshop will culminate with the last session in which participants will be encouraged to create their own Buto-fu and informally share each other’s original Butoh dance. \nThe purpose of this workshop is not to expose the participants to the entire scope of Butoh. Rather\, the workshop is designed to provide the participants with the opportunity to experience some of the essential elements of Butoh and thus allowing them to have an insight on how some of these Butoh principles and vocabularies can be applied to new choreographic ideas and inspirations.  This will be an excellent workshop for choreographers who are looking for new choreographic inspiration\, dancers or physical actors who wish to widen the range of their movement vocabularies\, or healthy adults who are seeking the self-exploration by deepening one’s understanding of the internal psyche\, as “the true goal of Butoh is not to impose choreographed movements from outside but to allow the movements to emerge from inside\, and structures are merely the gateways to the ‘inside\,’” according to Tatsumi Hijikata. \n ABOUT INSTRUCTOR GIO KUSANAGI \nGio Kusanagi is an interpretive dancer/performance artist who is a native of Japan. He studied Butoh (Japanese avant-garde dance) with Moe Yamamoto\, Toru Iwashita\, Kunisuke Kamiryo\, Yoshito Ohno (son of Kazuo Ohno)\, Yukio Waguri\, Seisaku & Yuri\, Ko Muroboshi\, and Kayo Mikami; a Butoh-inspired interpretive dance with Akira Kasai; Japanese sword dance with Kensei Namiki; traditional style swordsmanship with Ken Morita; Ballet at various dance schools including Morgantown Dance Studio\, Modern Dance with Bill Evans\, Kista Tucker\, Don Halquis\, Angela Dennis\, Kristina Isabella\, and Pilobolous Dance Company; Jazz Dance with Liz Rossi; Contact Improvisation with Jordan Fuchs and Contact Improvisation groups in Philladelphia; Break Dance at Harajuku Dance Academy; Central Asian Dance\, Persian Dance\, and Middle Eastern Dance with Narah Bint Durr; West African Dance with Jonathan Burbank; and Eurythmy (a form of modern dance founded by Rudolf Steiner) with both Akira Kasai and with Jolanda Frischknecht. He was also trained in Mime\, Laban Movements Analysis (Bill Evans and Kista Tucker)\, Bartenieff Fundamental (Bill Evans and Don Halquis)\, Alexander Technique (Suzanne Oliiver)\, Qigong\, Tai Chi\, and various other forms of martial arts. He has integrated the essences of all the movement-arts he has learned and performs originally choreographed interpretive dance repertories in collaboration with artists of various disciplines. Gio also teaches classes and workshops on  Butoh dance\, Tai Chi\, Qigong\, and dance therapy for self-exploration through various locations in West Virginia\, Maryland\, and New York.  Further\, he has produced multiple dance theaters in various cities\, including\, but were not limited to NYC\, Dayton OH\, Cincinnati OH\, and Morgantown WV. \nGio Kusanagi was the Artist in Residence at Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance in June 2012\, was a commissioned choreographer for the Asian American Dance Festival in Lower Manhattan (“Variations in a Foreign Land #13” produced by Yangtze Repertory Theatre) in September 2012\, a featured choreographer at a June festival at Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance in 2011\, a featured choreographer at Judson Memorial Church Performance Series curated by Movement Research in 2010\,  a commissioned choreographer/dancer at Pittsburgh First Night on 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, and 2012\, a featured choreographer/dancer at Pittsburgh Gallery Crawl in 2010\, a featured artist at Pittsburgh Asian American Silk Screen Gala in 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2012\, and 2013\, a solicited and a featured choreographer/dancer at Dragon Boat Festival in Pittsburgh in 2010 and 2011\, a featured and commissioned chorographer/performer at Dayton Performance Art Festival in February 2008\, was a featured artist through the Dayton Circus Art Collectives at Dayton Urban Night in May 2007\, a featured choreographer/dancer at SOS Art in Cincinnati in the years of June 2007\, 2008\,2009\, 2010\, 2011\, and 2012\,  a guest choreographer/dancer at Yellow Spring Street Fair in June 2008\, a solicited and featured choreographer/dancer at Center for Remembering and Sharing in NYC in August 2008\,  a featured choreographer/dancer at Fridge-Fest in Philadelphia in September 2005\, and a featured and commissioned choreographer/performer at Binghamton July Fest in 2004\, 2005. \nABOUT BUTOH \nButoh was originally founded by Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata. Among the Butoh artists Gio studied wth\, Yoshito Ohno is a son of Kazuo Ohno and studied with both Kuzuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata. \nAkira Kasai participated in the launch of first epoch of “Ankoku-Buth-Sha” (the first Butoh company) with Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata\, and Akira was in fact the person who came up with the name of “Butoh.”  Akira’s definition of Butoh is “Dyonesean dance” (where the impetus of movements come from within) rather than “Apollonian dance” (dance movements are structure externally) and Kunisuke Kamiryo\, who was one of highly recognized disciple of Akira\, was one of the individuals who had fully embodied this principle.  Gio’s first encounter with Butoh was Kunisuke Kamiryo’s dance\, which he was deeply inspired. \nMoe Yamamoto\, Yukio Waguri\, and Seisaku are direct disciples of Tatsumi Hijikata\, and they all inherited Tatsumi Hijikata’s Butoh-Fu (literally meaning\,’ Butoh Score’) that gave precise movement vocabularies to Butoh. Gio studied the system of Butoh-Fu with all three of them. Many of Hijikata’s Buto-fu were based on visual inspirations\, though some of them were also based on literary arts\, such as poetry. Toru Iwashita\, Ko Mutoboshi\, and Kayo Mikami are also direct students of Tatsumi Hijikata\, though Toru Iwashita is also known as one of the choreographers of Sankai-Juku and Kayo Mikami is the founder and choreographer of Torifune-Butoh-Sha. Both Toru Iwashita and Kayo Mikami incorporated Noguchi Gymnastic as the foundational exercise to prepare the dancers’ bodies for Butoh and Gio also studied this system. Ko Muroboshi developed his unique system of movements that included frozen motion and extreme release\, laced with sudden involuntary movements.

The teacher uses a combination of pleasant\, purposeful movement and guided attention to lead you through a particular pattern of movement and action. Emphasis on sensory learning results in movement that is more flexible\, pleasurable\, efficient and free from aches and pains. \nCost of Workshop:  $100 (early Bird $90 through 5/8) \n\n\n\nABOUT SITA MANI\nSita Mani draws on a wealth of additional experience from her long career as a professional dancer\, choreographer\, massage therapist and movement teacher to assist you in understanding what is going on in your own body as you explore these lessons and to benefit from that experience. \nShe is a graduate of the Actor’s Center Teacher Development Program and is currently on faculty at Herbert Berghof Studio and a Guest Teacher at The Scott Freeman Studio and CRS in New York. She was a founding faculty member at The Studio New York and has been a guest teacher at Mark Morris Dance School\,The New School and The Feldenkrais Institute in New York. \nSita began her movement training early\, studying Yoga and Tae Kwon Do as a child.She later studied Classical Ballet and Musical Theater Dance forms in Bombay and started her professional career on stage. She was  Principal Dancer  and Choreographer’s Assistant in The Shiamak Davar Dance Company in India from 1997-1990\,primarily doing Musical Theatre \, Music Videos and Teaching Dance. \nIn 1992 she completed The Certificate Program at the Alvin Ailey School in New York and spent ten years working with Dance and Physical Theater companies in New York\, as well as with independent choreographers from India\, Europe\, South America\, and the United States. She studied Acting at The Michael Howard Studio in New York and took up long term studies in new movement modalities\, interning for several years with Fay Simpson in Lucid Body Work and in Alexander Technique with Jean McClelland. Sita is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and a Licensed Massage Therapist. Her unique\, eclectic background has lead her to develop her own form of movement training\, which works towards giving performers a more refined self awareness\, physical awareness and visceral authenticity. Sita has worked at all levels of training\, ranging from the Yale School of Drama to kindergartens in the slums of Mumbai.
