This concert series features each season’s representative traditional works along with the colorful and delicate Japanese style confectionaries. \nThis will be the fourth and final concert of Volume 3 of this seasonal series of music concerts called Four Seasons in New York — Gems of Japanese Music. \n\nEach season is expressed through ingredients. Spring traditionally begins with sakura (cherry blossoms)\, broccoli rabe\, strawberries and raspberries\, followed by elderflower\, rose\, edamame and sansho (Japanese pepper) in summer. As autumn approaches we’ll pick chrysanthemum\, apples\, grapes\, chestnuts and hazelnuts; and yuzu and kumquats in winter…. Yoko has won numerous awards including the First Prize at the prestigious 10th Kenjun Memorial National Koto Competition as the first Yamada style koto performer. She received the First Prize at the 4th Great Wall International Music Competition and the Osaka Chinese Counsel Award and won the Japanese music audition for NHK-FM radio and her solo shamisen performance was broadcasted nationally. Since then she has performed numerous koto and shamisen pieces for the radio and regularly toured internationally. \nSince Yoko moved to the US in 2010\, her mission has been to promote Japanese music to American audiences. DESCRIPTION:Mar Creation\, Inc. & London-based J-Pop Star Naomi Suzuki invite you to an Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster Charity Concert. Naomi will sing Japanese Showa era songs arranged in a jazzy style and backed by a four piece band from the NY community: Oda Mura (guitar)\, Noa McNeill (piano)\, Yousuke Yosuke (drum)\, and Yamada Yoshiki (base). Rakugo (Japanese comedic storytelling) artist Ken Saito\, who is now preparing a show for Broadway debut in 2019\, will also perform (in Japanese). Attendees are asked to make a suggested cash donation of $20 at the door. Proceeds will go to the non-profit organization Rainbow Bridge World Project. \nSinger/Actress/Presenter Naomi Suzuki was scouted and brought to the UK by Polygram records in the late 90’s and since then has embarked on projects of both critical and commercial success. She reached number 12 in the UK singles charts and is active as a member of musical duo AJ Unity and solo songwriter as well as a prolific performer for charity events. Her single “Our Song”\, recorded for the victims of the 2011 Japanese tsunami was produced with Grammy award-winning Andy Wright\, who had previously worked with acts such as Bon Jovi and David Bowie. https://www.naomisuzuki.co.uk \nNaomi also has an impressive acting repertoire and has experience with acting in both British drama and European commercials\, one of her more notable roles alongside actor Hugh Grant. She also found herself the subject of a BBC documentary in the late 90’s and has been featured in numerous news and magazine articles. \nNaomi also became the first Japanese singer to perform at the Houses of Parliment where she gave a rousing performance on 5th March 2015 at the Memorial Concert for Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The concert\, which marked the 4th anniversary of the disaster\, was a great success drawing attention from the Japanese press and media. \n\nHaving chaired the largest Japanese festival in the UK\, Japan Matsuri\, for 4 years\, Naomi is also a reputable events host and has worked with Matsutake Kabuki and NHK broadcasting amongst others. She is also part of the PR team for her hometown of Tagawa\, Fukuoka Prefecture alongside cartoon mascot Taga-tan. \nAs a presenter\, Naomi is most well known for her show “Naomi’s London Calling” where she mainly presents about life in London as well as broadcasting support for the Japan tsunami victims. She has also presented the London edition of the popular Japanese radio show “Grown Up European City Walks” alongside ex Fuji TV star Chinatsu Otsubo. \nAt the time of the Japanese tsunami disaster in 2011 Naomi was in very ill health but after hearing of the disaster victims’ plight she was able to overcome her condition and resume activities with renewed vigor. Not only did she release a new double A-side charity single\, whose proceeds went to the disaster area\, but also wrote the song “Home” together with disaster victims so that their feelings could be heard by the World. \nAs well as performing for charity at the Sendai Street Jazz Festival and Totteoki music festival\, both of which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each\, Naomi also organised charity gigs alongside fellow performers and backing musicians from Japan. She is particularly concerned for the welfare of the scores of orphans and disadvantaged children left behind by the disaster and works with numerous NPO’s.­ \nIn 2016 Naomi organised and performed at the 5th Japan Earthquake Memorial Concert held at the Islington Assemble Hall London and personally handed over all donations to affected areas in Japan. Following this Naomi toured Japan and donated all profits from ticket sales to the cause. This event was covered in all major newspapers in Japan and was also reported on NHK TV.

She studied under the Japan Association of the Tea Ceremony and was certified as a Japanese tea ceremony master in 2003\, and holds the title of Jufuku-an. She established Tea-Whisk Inc in New York to introduce the beauty of the Japanese Tea Ceremony with Junya Mori. Mr. and Mrs. Mori believe that within the tea ceremony is a force invisible and precious\, and that one can achieve spiritual growth through practicing tea. LittleStarRun (based in PA and Greece) and Rie Tamuro (from Japan and now based in NY) will play solo and Yuka Yamamoto and her bandmate Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz  of The Fugu Plan (NY\, Israel\, Japan) will perform as a duo. \nConjuring mystery with bewitching vocals and modern sonics\, these island-hopping storytellers set sparkling observations of cultural dislocation to melodies haunting and buoyant. LittleStarRun found her voice among the echoes of ancient Athens and Crete\, and her dreamy songs reflect her explorations there. Rie’s writing also sharply maps the experiences of trading one island for another half-way round the world. Yuka finds inspiration in the vanishing traditions and folklore of medieval Japan and her own Sado Island. \nTickets are $20 and are available online\, by phone (212-677-8621) and at the door. \nRie Tamuro\, a 23-year-old singer / songwriter from Nara\, Japan\, started playing the guitar at the age of 14\, writing songs and performing on the street and at shows. She has more than 150 original songs and has resided in New York since August 2015. Her journey began in 2003 in Athens Greece where a career in circus aerial arts and studies in international theater led her to find her musical voice. She has been creating and performing as LittleStarRun since 2010 and received musical studies at Musical Praxis Conservatory in guitar and music theory. Her music can be described as ethereal indie folk or indie folk dream pop “with comparisons to Jenny Lewis\, Feist\, and Beach House.” In 2015 she had to return to the US after over a decade in Greece to recover from a severe ankle injury which resulted in a debilitating chronic neurological illness. Despite the setback\, in 2016 she released her first single “Wilting” recorded in Athens Greece in the home studio of producer Anthony Georgou with whom she co-produced the track. Her studio recordings reflect her diverse musical influences. “Wilting is a song richly layered in echoey vocals and lush guitars leading the listener on a psychedelic journey through an unconscious underground. The song encapsulates an ethereal parallel universe with LittleStarRun’s poetic phrases\, subtle country folk guitar blended with layers of distortion and a modern greek chorus of her own vocals. The songs that they will be playing are all originals. \n“Blessed with a pure\, crystalline mountain lake voice\, Hiromi Suda combines the classical qualities of intricate phrasing\, and attention to emphasis and timing with a melodic and harmonic complexity that reminds of bossa nova.” \n\n\n\nAbout Romi & Soli \nSoli (vocal\, guitar) is a singer–song–writer/producer from Bahia\, Brazil. He sings lyrics in both Portuguese and English on top of his guitar accompaniment\, combining different rhythm patterns from Brazil including Baião. He loves to freely fuse many styles of music for lifting up the spirits. \n*Baião is a traditional style of music in north-east Brazil. \nRomi (keyboard) is a pianist/composer from Japan. She’s performed in Japan and the US with various ensembles. She has also worked as producer/engineer in the music/recording industry. She holds a BA in Piano from Kunitachi College of Music and a MA in music composition from Queens College. \nAbout Hiromi Suda \nVocalist/composer Hiromi Suda won the World Scholarship and entered Berklee College of Music in 2005. There\, Ms. Suda studied with many world renowned musicians including Jazz vocals with Ms. Lisa Thorson\, Latin American music with Ms. Mili Bermejo and Brazilian music styles with Fernando Brandao. \nBy 2007\, Hiromi had developed a keen interest in Brazilian music and during the summer of 2007 she spent three months in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil further honing her skill with Brazilian music styles and instruments\, such as the pandeiro. Her experience in Brazil was highly rewarding not only musically\, but also gave a historical and cultural context to her passion for Brazilian music.  During this period\, Ms. Suda attended the Choro School called Escola Portatil de Musica. She studied the pandeiro with Celsinho Silva and Jorginho Silva and choro vocal style with the choro singer\, Amelia Rabello and MPB vocal style with the Brazilian vocalist Suely Mesuqita. \nIn the ensuing years\, Hiromi Suda has magnificently woven her  knowledge of Brazilian music to produce a singular and innovative sound recognized by critics as a serious contribution in vocal style and technique.  Ms. Suda performed with the choro group Choro Democratico and the great flute player\, Fernando Brandao\, including concerts at the Brazilian 13th Independence Day Festival\, Ryles Jazz Club\, University of Massachusetts\, among others. She performed with Clarice Assad group in NY including the concert at The stone. She also leads concerts with her own band in New York such as Blue note NY\, Zinc bar\, Cornelia street cafe and among others\, the Kennedy center in Washington DC(Iberian music festival) and New England and Japan. \nShe released her debut album in 2008\, which received many accolades and prompted a tour with world famous percussionist\, Keita Ogawa. The album is receiving great radio support worldwide\, including featured performances for several radios in Japan. \nIn January 2012 she recorded her sophomore album\, ‘Sou’ produced by the great Brazilian guitarist\, Romero Lubambo and recorded at the famed Avatar studio in NY. The band members are Anne Drummond(Flute)\, Julian Shore(Piano)\, Keita Ogawa(Percussions/Drums)\,Yasushi Nakamura(Bass). “Sou” was released in August 2012 from Happiness Records. She did CD release tour in Japan(Tokyo\, Yokohama\, Osaka\, Nagoya\, Hitachi\, Mito and Kofu). In New York\, she did CD release concert at the Cornelia street cafe in October 2012. \nIn August 2013\, she released her mini album\, ”Rain Dance”. This is the recordings of her original compositions. She had the CD release concert at Blue Note NY. The song from mini album “Rain Dance\,” her  song “Mizu no Utsuwa” won an honorable mention award at the 18th Annual USA Songwriting Competition 2013 and was also selected as a finalist of the 11th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards. Her song “Bird Call” from her 2nd album “Sou” was  selected as a Semi-Finalist of the 2013 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) out of about 19\,000 entries. “Sou” was also selected as a finalist of the 19th Annual USA songwriting Competition 2014. Her song\, “Hajimari” was selected as a finalist of the 12th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards. Currently\, Hiromi Suda lives and works in New York City. \nwww.hiromisuda.com

DESCRIPTION:Mar Creation Inc. and CRS invite you to a one-time performance on Friday\, June 17\, 2016 at 7:30 pm at CRS\, featuring live music by three members of the multiple Grammy winning Maria Schneider Orchestra — recent collaborators with David Bowie on his 2016 single\, “Sue (Or In A Season of Crime)” —.and live painting by internationally renowned Japanese calligrapher\, Setsuhi Shiraishi. Shiraishi\, currently on a US tour\, will create a mixture of conventional and modern calligraphy accompanied by Jay Anderson (bass)\, Scott Robinson (sax)\, Gary Versace (accordion). \nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are available online\, by phone 212-677-8621 and at CRS. \nCalligrapher Setsuhi Shiraishi specializes in shodo\, a form of Japanese calligraphy and is famous for creating large-scale works in a performance setting. Having been interested in calligraphy during her childhood\, Shiraishi became a calligraphy master at 22 years old. She is pursuing her own unique style of calligraphy while expressing the world of traditional calligraphy. She has toured widely in Europe and Asia and recently in the United States\, attracting many fans from around the world through her live collaborative performances with music. \nSetsuhi has given calligraphy performances at various places including the private salon Diners Club Ginza Lounge in Tokyo\, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Tokyo (at the 60th anniversary event of the launch of Fissler’s pressure cookers)\, and the British Museum in London. She also held a joint performance with the London Improvisers Orchestra\, participated in an art fair in Paris\, and held personal exhibitions in both Paris and New York. Also in New York\, Setsuhi conducted a calligraphy workshop and performed in both a jazz club and an art gallery with Jay Anderson and Frank Kimbrough of the Maria Schneider Orchestra as well as jazz horn player Adam Unsworth. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, Setsuhi calligraphed the title on a CD cover for Jiang Xiao-Qing\, a world-famous player of the traditional Chinese “guzheng” string instrument. \nSetsuhi collaborates with accessory designer RYONA to create 縁 (“en”)\, their unique brand of calligraphic accessories. He was selected by the US State Department to be a Jazz Ambassador for 2001\, completing an eight-week\, eleven-country tour of West Africa performing his arrangements of the compositions of Louis Armstrong (later featured on his CD Jazz Ambassador). In 2012\, Scott served as artist-in-residence at the week-long Ancona Summer Jazz Festival in Italy. He is currently serving each June as musical host of the annual Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival in Hungary. \nScott’s many works as a composer cover a very wide range\, from solo performance pieces\, jazz tunes and songs\, and chamber works such as his Immensities for Large Instruments\, on up to large-scale compositions for wind band\, symphony orchestra\, and even combined orchestras. \nThe son of a piano teacher and a National Geographic writer/editor\, Scott Robinson was born on April 27\, 1959 in New Jersey\, and grew up in an eighteenth century Virginia farmhouse. While in high school\, he received the “Louis Armstrong Award\,” and the “Best Soloist Award” from the National Association of Jazz Educators. In 1981\, he graduated from Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, and a year later became\, at 22\, Berklee’s youngest faculty member. \nSince moving to New York in 1984\, Scott has been awarded four fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts\, and participated in a number of Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning recordings. He has been profiled in new editions of the Encyclopedia of Jazz and Grove’s Dictionary of Jazz\, along with books by Royal Stokes\, Nat Hentoff and others. In 1997\, a 4-minute CNN program featured Scott and the giant contrabass saxophone which he used on his CD\, Thinking Big. Scott has been the winner of a number DownBeat Critics Polls and Jazz Journalists Association awards in recent years. \nNow a resident of Teaneck\, NJ\, Scott has constructed a studio/laboratory for sonic research\, containing an astonishing assortment of instruments and devices. His first solo and collaborative recordings from this facility have begun to appear under his own ScienSonic Laboratories imprint. ScienSonic Laboratories\, LLC has released some highly creative and far-reaching projects including Nucleus\,  Creative Music for 3 Bass Saxophones\, and Live at Space Farms featuring longtime Sun Ra saxophonist Marshall Allen. In 2012\, ScienSonic’s recordings were certified by the Space Foundation as Certified Space Imagination Products\, entitled to bear the Foundation’s certification seal. Projects from ScienSonic Laboratories include recordings with Frank Kimbrough\, Emil Viklicky\, Marshall Allen\, Henry Grimes and Roscoe Mitchell. \nUnder the Doc-Tone imprint\, Scott recently released Bronze Nemesis\, a CD featuring 12 compositions based on the exploits of 1930s pulp adventure hero Doc Savage. This project\, ten years in the making\, was greeted with extensive press coverage in the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, DownBeat and elsewhere. The group\, known as the “Doctette”\, will perform at this year’s Newport Jazz Festival. \nAn endorsing artist for Vandoren reeds and mouthpieces since the mid-eighties\, Scott has recently been signed to Denis Wick of London as an artist/endorser of their products for brass. \nA respected performer in all areas of jazz\, from traditional to avant-garde\, Scott Robinson has arrived at his own unique musical voice which\, as once described in a Northsea Jazz Festival program\, “combines solid foundations with great daring”. \n\n  \nAbout Jay Anderson (bass) \nBassist/composer Jay Anderson is among the most versatile and respected jazz artists performing today. Born in Southern California\, Anderson began playing acoustic bass at the age of twelve. Throughout junior high\, high school\, and college\, Anderson won numerous awards for excellence in both jazz and classical music. One week after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Performance from California State University at Long Beach\, Anderson was asked to join the Woody Herman Orchestra. After touring with the “Herd” for a year\, he was called by Carmen McRae and performed with the legendary singer for the next two years. \nIn 1982 Anderson made the decision to move to New York City. Since moving East\, he has continued to perform and record with some of the most important names in jazz. Shione’s crystal voice and beautiful lyrical melody weave feelings and stories into an unforgettable musical drama. \nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door\, and include one drink. \nShione Yukawa was born in Tokyo\, 1983. She joined the “Little Singers of Tokyo” and started singing while in primary school\, allowing her to experience many performances abroad. Her first solo performance at the Pop Field in 2001 created a huge buzz\, and her voice became widely recognized over night. Shione returned to Tokyo after studying in Ireland\, and began composing her own songs and started her career as a professional musician. This concert series will feature each season’s representative traditional works along with the colorful and delicate Japanese style confectionaries. \nEach season is expressed through ingredients. Spring traditionally begins with sakura (cherry blossoms)\, broccoli rabe\, strawberries and raspberries\, followed by elderflower\, rose\, edamame and sansho (Japanese pepper) in summer. Yoko has won numerous awards including the First Prize at the prestigious 10th Kenjun Memorial National Koto Competition as the first Yamada style koto performer. DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) and Mar Creation\, Inc. invite you to join us for a concert by the Japanese singer Emme on Saturday\, November 21\, 2015 at 2pm.  Emme will perform “World Music from Japan” in two sets (40 min each)\, featuring Japanese popular music from the Showa period [1940’s – 80’s] as well as her own original songs. This is a rare opportunity to hear the classics of traditional and contemporary Japanese music that Japanese people truly love. Joining her will be Shu Odamura on guitar and guest Akihito Obama on shakuhachi. \nTickets are $25 in advance and $30 at door. \nEmme was born in Tokyo\, Japan. Since she started her singing career in 1981\, she’s taken part in countless recordings and live concerts with big artists such as Masayoshi Takanaka\, Katsumi Watanabe\, Yuming\, Takuro Yoshida\, EPO etc….. Her angelic voice is widely recognized across many different genres of music\, including jazz\, fusion\, Japanese pop and folk. \nIn the music department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1997\, Emme graduated from special courses of traditional Japanese music. She has released four original CDs from 2001 to the present. Emme sang at a reception party for the President of Ireland upon his visit to Japan. She composed the Asakusa Sanja Matsuri official theme song\, and appeared in the Thai movie “Yamada.” Emme played with Tokiwazu Mozibei and Altan\, among many others. \nhttp://www.emmevoice.com \nBorn in Kyoto\, Japan\, Shu Odamura started taking guitar lessons at the age of 12. In 2003\, he entered the Gibson Jazz Guitar Contest in Tokyo and was the youngest participant to win the ”Jury’s Special prize.” In 2006\, Shu moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music where he was the recipient of the Toshiko Akiyoshi Award\, and where he earned a Bachelor’s of Music Degree in Jazz Composition. \nAs a guitarist\, Shu performs and records with jazz ensembles\, pop/rock bands\, church choirs\, and as leader of his own jazz groups. In 2010\, he played on Mina Cho’s album “Originality\,” which led him to be honored by “The 32nd Jazz Station Poll” as Top 3rd Acoustic Guitarist. This poll is conducted by renowned jazz journalist Arnaldo DeSouteiro. \nAs a composer\, Shu composes scores for independent films\, writes and arranges for jazz orchestras\, flute/saxophone ensembles\, pop singers and other ensembles. Shu recently composed the music for a feature length independent movie entitled “The Wishmakers”. His minimal-music piece “Kitchen Talk” was selected to air on Ryuichi Sakamoto’s radio program in Japan. \nShu is now based in New York where he regularly performs\, composes and teaches. Shu was granted an Artist Visa from the US Department of Immigration and Naturalization Service which allows him to further develop as an artist here in the USA. He teaches guitar at Yamaha Music School of Bergen County. \nhttp://shuodamura.com/ \nBorn in Kagawa Prefecture in 1975\, Akihito Obama studied various styles of shakuhachi under leading musicians such as Toshimitsu Ishikawa (traditional shakuhachi) and Satoshi Yoneya (minyo [folk music] shakuhachi). After graduating from the NHK Hogaku [traditional Japanese music] Gino-sha Ikusei-kai\, the premier one year course for hogaku musicians aspiring to be professional performers\, Obama won the Second Annual Shakuhachi Newcomer Competition (2000). \nIn recent years\, Obama draws on his musical experiences and incorporates these influences into his own music. In 2004\, Obama recorded his first solo shakuhachi album Fukoku [Wind Carvings] featuring improvised works. During the following year\, he undertook a walking pilgrimage concert tour to the eighty-eight temples of Shikoku Island and revealed his second album Nami to Tsubaki to [Waves and Camellias and] consisting of his original compositions. In 2006\, Obama was invited to the Swedish International Festival of Wind Music holding solo concerts and appearing with local musicians. This was followed by a month long tour of Europe. In 2007\, Obama released visions. collaborating with electronic music artist hajimeinoue. In 2008\, Obama was invited to the Japan Festival at The Kennedy Center (Washington\, DC) and the Sydney World Shakuhachi Festival. He released Michinone [Street Music\, New Sounds] working with satsuma-biwa [Satsuma plucked lute] player Yukihiro Goto. In 2012\, Obama lived in New York for six months as a fellow of Asian Cultural Council (ACC) and released SUI [Water] with his band. \nCurrently\, Obama performs as a solo musician and participates in various ensembles including “TAKiOBAND” led by Takio Ito\, a minyo singer. He often appears in concerts overseas and has performed in over 30 countries. Obama has developed and refined his technique by performing in venues from small clubs to large concert halls with artists playing hogaku instruments and Western instruments.
