The Future Perfect by Eric Borlaug
That was the beginning of time as she later remembered… Four beings of the human persuasion create a past for themselves through play and collaborative storytelling. It may have gone something like this, where the son is the mother and the father is the son and the mother is the sister and the daughter the father and the mother. An open-text process poem for the stage, THE FUTURE PERFECT blends gender, person, time, and tense in a stream of collective consciousness. Gradually they, you, I, we and Nosotros discover that the world weʼve been creating has a gravity of its own. You may or may not have a revelation about the nature of magentivity and its origin, and will very likely realize something frightening in a shade of color we have never known before. Probably something about acceptance.

AliveWire has cast an ensemble of five actors that have been workshopping this play for the last six weeks. A process poem for the stage, THE FUTURE PERFECT charts the recursive motion from a blank slate of uncertainty, open possibility, and potentiality to a concrete world of interconnection and consequence. The ensemble of 5 collectively navigates the six characters and narrator, swapping roles, crossing genders, and often contradicting previous moments. Using viewpoints, improvisation, composition, and various psychophysical disciplines, the ensemble has crafting a physical score around this open text, which has no character delineations.
