Concert: ROKYOKU ROCK YOU! in NY

Rokyoku is a style of traditional Japanese narrative singing accompanied by Shamisen, three-stringed Japanese banjo. Rokyoku stories are largely based on historical events and people, and the characters run the gamut of all classes and eras, from aristocratic warlords to fast-talking city conmen and sumo wrestlers.

Award-winning Keiko Haruno was a popular TV personality when she discovered Rokyoku and became instantly fascinated. She apprenticed to master Yuriko Haruno II and moved to Osaka in 2003. Keiko now performs over 200 times a year as a professional Rokyoku artist. This performance is a part of her world tour including Italy, Brazil, Russia and China from 2015 to 2016.

The program includes an introduction to Rokyoku and demonstrations with the audience members, Rokyoku in Japanese with English subtitles and Rokyoku performed in English. Haruno will be accompanied by Ipputei Hazuki (Shamisen).

● Free Admission (Space limited. RSVP required.)
