Shadow Yoga is a school of Hatha Yoga developed by master teacher, Zhander Remete. Utilizing techniques of physical and mental cultivation, it is taught through three fixed forms or Preludes, that develop awareness through discipline, self awareness, and proper relaxation. These qualities are essential for the cultivation of Yoga.
Balakrama, Stepping into Strength
Balakrama works to strengthen the legs and restore mobility to the ankles, knees, and hips. The practitioner learns to stabilize the grounding action of the feet and, through its pumping and relaxing actions, increase strength and endurance.
Maya Smeloff began her exploration of Yoga in 2001 while pursuing a BA in Anthropology in New York. She moved to Portland and was introduced to Shadow Yoga in 2007. She has traveled the world to study with her teachers Zhander Remete and Emma Balnaves and is grateful to their patience and guidance in this practice. Maya is excited to be back in New York and believes that shadow yoga is accessible to all.
