How much does our upbringing and surroundings influence who we will have chemistry with?

Your childhood plays an enormous role in who you are going to fall in love with.  There’s very nice data that you fall in love with somebody from the same socio-economic background, same general level of intelligence, same general religious values, same sense of humor, a lot of the same social goals.  So when you walk into a room, the first thing you do is weed somebody out who doesn’t look right.  But when you begin to talk to them, their social values, who they are, makes an enormous difference on whether you fall in love with them.

Is there only one true love for anyone?

I think in past generations, people did think there was only one true love for anybody. And in fact that idea comes out of the ancient Greeks. But I don’t believe it. I think that there’s a whole array of human beings out there that you might fall deeply in love with and have a very happy marriage with.

Does age really matter? (men dating younger women, women dating younger men)

I think that age can matter a great deal, or not at all. It depends on what your emotional age is, not your physical age. I certainly know people in their 70s and 80s who have an enormous amount of energy and do all kinds of things that people do in their 20s. But sometimes if you’re older, and you’re going out with somebody that is a great deal younger, your values will be different, what you want to do in the evening will be different and your opinions will be different. Which could create a good deal of friction.Read more
