Omoiyari Yosan (“Sympathy Budget”) is a popular Japanese term for funds provided by Japan as host nation support for the U.S. forces stationed in Japan. Although the Omoiyari budget is not mandated under the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), the Japanese government has been paying more than $60 billion out of its taxpayers’ money since 1978, $150,000 a soldier per year. Most of the funds are paid in order to support the luxurious life of U.S. military personnel in Japan.
