All week we’re sharing talks by the artists who’ll be performing in this weekend’s 3rd International M³ Festival, which will be presented online by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Maurice-Grey talk about their duo commission “Intervallic Experimentasian” premiering Sunday, March 20 @ 2pm ET. Festival details are below.
After nearly six months working together as part of the Mutual Mentorship for Musicians (M³) initiative, the project’s 3rd cohort of artists reconvenes virtually for the world premieres of their new, collaborative M³ commissions on Saturday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. ET and Sunday, March 20 at 2:00 p.m. ET via the The National Jazz Museum in Harlem.
Hosted by renowned writer Kyla Marshell, each premiere will be followed by a Q&A with the artists, who will answer questions from the audience about their creative process. Rani Jambak is a composer, producer, and vocalist based in Medan, Indonisia. connecting living and human ancestors. After completing a Masters in Creative Industry at the Macquarie University, Australia, she began her solo career, spearheading projects such as “Medan Soundspectives”, a cultural festival celebrating the acoustic diversity of Medan, Indonesia, and working for the Goethe Institut, Singapore. Rani’s work is often concerned with the place of sound in culture and society, and its connecting living and human ancestors. Rani is a dedicated environmentalist, from starting social media campaign #formynature for which she creates music about various environmental issues; to partnering with local government and international NGOs such as Orangutan Haven and PPLH Bahorok, an eco farming centre.

Sheila M. Maurice-Grey, also known as Ms. Maurice, is a London-based trumpeter, vocalist, and visual artist. Sheila brings her melange of influences from organic grooves infused with 70s jazz and a touch of West African sonic seasoning. These sounds are heavily influenced by her London upbringing.
Central to Sheila’s music, is stimulated by her visual art practice where she aims to question her ‘identity’ as well as what it means ‘to misrepresent vs to be misrepresented.’ Her art provocatively explores the notion of ‘blackness’ and the hyper sexualisation of the black female body throughout history since the early 1800’s. In particular she is interested in the visual history and facts known about ‘Blackface Minstrelsy’ and ‘The Hottentot Venus – Sarah Bartmann.’
Sheila is also bandleader of KOKOROKO and plays with jazz septet Nérija, who were nominated for Jazz Fm Breakthrough Act 2016 and Parliamentary Jazz Newcomer of Year 2017 winner. She has performed with the likes of SOLANGE, KANO on the ‘Jool’s Holland Show’ and ‘The Mercury Prize 2016,’ and features on Little SIMZ’s album ‘Stillness in Wonderland.’
